A preliminary molecular historical biogeography of caragana (Leguminosae) based on ITS and trnL-F DNA sequence data

The nrDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and cpDNA trnL-F internal spacer (IGS) sequence data of caragana eight species and one outgroup Halimodendron halodendron, was employed to reconstruct a phylogenetic tree, then the area relationship was analyzed by means of component analysis (CA), Brooks parsimony analysis (BPA), and dispersal-vicariance analysis (DIVA), six areas were selected from two divided distributions of East Asia and Tethys in caragana. The phylogenetic tree indicated that there were three distinctive groups, which were attributed to some morphological characters, first with pinnate foliage and deciduous rachis, second with palmate foliage and persistent sclerotic stick rachis, and third with pinnate foliage and persistent sclerotic stick rachis. The results of CA and BPA illustrated general area relationships. An explicit area relationship should be Altai-Sayan, Far East NE China and North China (Hengduan Mountains). DIVA recognized several explanatory vicariance and dispersal events. As the scenario of caragana distribution pattern, it looks like the vicariance versus dispersal plays more important role. In vicaraince, there are not only the isolated far-distance vicariance, but also the adjacent vicariance especially a vicariance between Hengduan Mountains and North China.

Coating seeds with water absorbent materials can improve their survival, especially for those planted in drought or barren areas. In this study, effects of five kinds of super absorbent polymers(SAPs) on seed germination and seedling growth of caragana korshinskii under drought conditions were investigated. Our results showed that SAP coatings could significantly improve the percentage and energy of seed germination, as well as reduce the relative electrical conductivity(REC), proline, malondialdehyde(MDA), H_2O_2 content, and peroxidase(POD) activity during germination. These results implied that seeds could uptake moisture from SAP coatings to alleviate drought-induced oxidative stress and membrane damage, thus exhibiting a better vigor and germination performance. After coating C. korshinskii seeds with SAPs, more seedlings emerged and grew better. Under the combined influence of the water absorption capacity of SAP and other factors, the efficiencies of five SAP coatings are in the sequence D>E>B>A>C. The function of the SAP coating on promoting seedling survival was confirmed in Mu Us Sandy Land in Ordos, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China. The average seedling number of SAP D-coated seeds increased twofold on that of naked seeds. Our results are expected to be helpful in understanding and utilizing SAP seed coatings in improving plant survival under drought conditions.

Subtree, TASS and an Analysis of the Genus caragana

Subtree analysis and three area satements (TASS) procedure are used to deal with the area relationship in historical biogeography. On the basis of the taxon cladogram, the procedure could identify and eliminate the paralogy node and determine the informative subtree. The area relationships are generally illustrated in several subtrees and the consensus tree. The distribution pattern of the genus caragana comprising about 72 species and occurring in 13 areas, was analyzed by using subtree method and TASS procedure in this study. The results showed seven subtrees representing the area relationships of section and series of the genus, and the consensus tree provided the 13 area relationships. These results are congruent with our former result using component analysis for caragana.

[Objectives]To determine the potential habitat range of caragana acanthophylla in Xinjiang.[Methods]The known distribution points of *** were used as samples,and a MaxEnt model was developed based on their climatic variables to identify key environmental factors affecting the potential habitats of *** through jackknife method and construction of a response relationship between representative variables and habitat suitability;the suitability of habitats for *** in Xinjiang was evaluated based on the output results of the model.[Results](i)The accuracy of the model verified by AUC curve was 0.971,indicating that the potential habitats of *** in Xinjiang predicted by MaxEnt model were highly credible.(ii)The optimum climatic characteristics for the distribution of *** in Xinjiang were:isothermality 18.8%-34%,minimum temperature of coldest month-30℃to-13℃,mean temperature of coldest quarter-18℃ to-4℃,annual precipitation 80-410 mm,precipitation of driest month 0-25 mm,precipitation of driest quarter 0-82 mm,and precipitation of coldest quarter 0-75 mm.(iii)The total potential distribution area of *** in Xinjiang was modeled to be 1.03×10^(5) km^(2),of which 8.54×10^(3)km^(2) was high suitability area,mainly in the front mountain belt of the north slope of Tianshan Mountain in Urumqi City,Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture,Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture,and Yili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture and the front mountain belt of Barluk Mountain in Tacheng Prefecture.[Conclusions]This study is of great significance for the future scientific management,regeneration,vegetation restoration and ecological protection of ***.

The genus caragana is a member of the family of Fabaceae, subfamily Faboideae and there are 62 species, 9 varieties, 12 deformations grown in China. More than 200 components have been identified as flavonoids, stilbenoids, which are the major constituents of this genus, and phenylpropanoids, terpenoids, alkaloids also have been isolated from this genus. Modern pharmacological studies suggest diverse pharmacological activities of the herbals from the genus, including anti-tumor, antiinflammatory, anti-virus, and anti-oxidant activities. This review summarized the update research progress on the chemical components and pharmacological effects of the Cragana genus.

With seeds of caragana versicolor in Purang County, Tibet as the materials, the seed germination and seedling growth of C. versicolor were measured under acid and alkali stress, and the soil acidity and alkalinity for normal growth and development of C. versicolor were determined, so as to provide the theoretical basis for cultivation of C. versicolor in acidified or alkaline soil. The results showed that the seed germination of C. versicolor was promoted when treated by strong acid (pH 3) and strong alkali (pH 11) solutions, and the seedling effect was good. The results also indicated that C. versicolor was a kind of plant with strong acid and alkali resistance, suitable for cultivation in acid and alkali soil areas.

Microclimate Effect of Artificial caragana microphylla Communities in Horqin Sandy Land

caragana microphylla is one of the key species for vegetation restoration in Horqin Sandy Land. Adopting field investigation and outdoor experiments,the microclimate effect of artificial C. microphylla communities with different restoration years were studied by observing wind velocity,air temperature,relative humidity and soil temperature. The results show that:( 1) caragana microphylla community has an obvious wind-breaking effect near ground surface. Compared with shifting dunes,the wind velocity in the 6-year-old and 11-year-old C. microphylla shrubs at the height of 30 cm separately decreases by 71. 9% and 76. 0%.( 2) Mean daily temperature in the 6-year-old and 11-yearold C. microphylla communities is 3. 7 ℃ and 4. 9 ℃ lower than in shifting dunes,respectively.( 3) The relative humidity of air in the caragana microphylla shrubs is higher than in shifting dunes.( 4) Soil temperature in C. microphylla plantation is lower than in shifting dunes. These results are significant in further exploring material and energy exchange near surface layer of artificial vegetation in the extremely arid condition.

锦鸡儿属(caragana)植物是黄土高原植被的重要组分,具有固氮、耐旱的特性,对黄土丘陵沟壑区的植被恢复具有重要意义。作者于2002–2003年对该属本地种白毛锦鸡儿(***)和甘蒙锦鸡儿(***)及外来种中间锦鸡儿(***)种子被动物取食情况进行了比较研究。2003年白毛锦鸡儿种子散落前的虫害率为88.2%,甘蒙锦鸡儿为29.7%±1.7%,中间锦鸡儿为43.2%±4.8%。种子落地后,白毛锦鸡儿和甘蒙锦鸡儿的种子被小啮齿动物取食的比例在各种微生境下均为100%,且取食速度很快,在种子放置后4d内即全部被取食。中间锦鸡儿种子被取食率则因微生境的不同而不同:在灌丛下被取食率为100%,在半阳坡的开阔草地上为85.0%±10.0%,在种植植物未成功的水平阶地上为31.0%±8.7%,且取食速度相对较慢。研究结果表明,食种子动物的取食大大减少了白毛锦鸡儿和甘蒙锦鸡儿的种子量以及种子传播萌发的机会。但食种子动物可能充当了白毛锦鸡儿4.0%硬实种子的传播者,从而有助于白毛锦鸡儿实现种子途径的更新;中间锦鸡儿种子无论在散落前还是散落后受食种子动物的影响均很小。

Soil water depletion depth by planted vegetation on the Loess Plateau

Evapotranspiration of much planted vegetation exceeds precipitation, and this can deplete soil water and cause a deep dry layer in the soil profile, which is a serious obstacle to sustainable land use on the Loess Plateau, China. This study aimed to determine water depletion depth of planted grassland, shrub, and forest in a semiarid area on the Loess Plateau. Soil moisture of five vegetation types was measured to >20 m in depth. The vegetation types were crop, natural grasse, seven-year-old planted alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), 23-year-old planted caragana (caragana microphylla Lam.) shrub, and 23-year-old planted pine (Pinus tabulaeformis L) forest land. Through comparing moisture of planted alfalfa grass, caragana shrub, and pine forest to crop and natural grassland, the depth and amount of soil water consumed by grassland, caragana brush and pine forest was determined. The depth of soil water depleted by alfalfa, caragana brush, and pine forest reached 15.5, 22.4 and 21.5 m, respectively.
