Background: Osteoarthritis is one of the most common bone diseases, triggered by bone destruction stemming from the inflammatory response of chondrocytes. The disease progresses slowly, but halting its progression or finding a cure remains elusive. The treatment of pain associated with osteoarthritis has yielded unsatisfactory results. In recent years, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have emerged as a potential avenue for addressing the condition. In this study, we used MSCs to treat companion dogs with osteoarthritis. Methods: For this study, 26 animals were included in this study to assess the pain and mobility one month after treatment. The pain scores were obtained from owners using a questionnaire based on the Helsinki Chronic Pain Index, and the Liverpool Osteoarthritis in Dogs (LOAD) Owner questionnaire to assess the mobility of the dogs from stem cell infusion. Results: Questionnaires were administered to dog owners before and one month after treatment, and we found that dogs treated with MSCS experienced an 81.2% ± 6.8% reduction in pain and a 77.9% ± 10.1% increase in mobility, whereas most of the dogs in the untreated control group experienced disease progression. Conclusions: The transplantation of stem cells into companion pets is a promising and expanding opportunity for pet owners with aging and arthritic dogs. MSCs may play an important role in the treatment of OA without complications in companion pets.

Objective:To characterize obese or overweight dogs that visited private Japanese veterinary clinics located in humid subtropical climate zones.Methods:Dogs were categorized into four body condition score groups and five body size groups based on their breed.Multilevel logistic regression models were applied to the data.A Chi-squared test was used to examine whether the percentage of obese or overweight dogs differed between breeds.Results:There were 15.1% obese dogs and 39.8% overweight dogs.Obese dogs were characterized by increased age and female sex,whereas overweight dogs were characterized by increased age and neuter status(P < 0.05).Peak probabilities of dogs being either obese or overweight were between 7 and 9 years of age,with the probabilities then declining as the dogs got older.For example,in toy sized dogs,the probability of dogs being overweight increased from 33.4% to a peak of 55.1% as dog age rose from 1 to 8years old.Also,in medium,small and toy sized dogs,neutered dogs were more likely to be overweight than intact dogs,whereas neutered small sized dogs were more likely to be obese than intact small sized dogs(P < 0.05).Additionally,the percentages of obese or overweight dogs differed between the 10 selected breeds with the highest percentage of obese or overweight dogs.Conclusions:By taking age,body size,sex and neuter status into account,veterinarians can advise owners about maintaining their dogs in ideal body condition.

Cases of acquired infertility in dogs often have poor prognosis and can be frustrating to clinicians in Canine practice. In this case, a 3.5-year-old male Caucasian dog was presented for infertility evaluation. He had no record of successful breeding despite being mated with multiple bitches over a two-year period. Breeding soundness examination was performed including history evaluation, general physical and reproductive system examination, hematology, libido determination, and semen collection, evaluation and screening for infectious organisms. The presence of copious growth of bacteria (Escherichia coli) in conjunction with significant sperm abnormalities and leucospermia was applied to diagnose infertility due to a sub-chronic or chronic bacterial infection of the reproductive tract. Bacterial infection caused significant sperm abnormalities including low sperm motility, increased number of dead sperm and sperm with structural abnormalities such as detached heads, fractured necks, looped tails and coiled tails. Treatment was effected by administering ciprofloxacin orally for 4 weeks.
