Intake of tobacco nitrosamines of smokers in various provinces of China and their Cancer risk:A meta-analysis

Nitrosamines are a class of carcinogens which have been detected widely in food,water,some pharmaceuticals as well as tobacco.The objectives of this paper include reviewing the basic information on tobacco consumption and nitrosamine contents,and assessing the health risks of tobacco nitrosamines exposure to Chinese smokers.We searched the publications in English from“Web of Science”and those in Chinese from the“China National Knowledge Infrastructure”in 2022 and collected 151 literatures with valid information.The content of main nitrosamines in tobacco,including 4-(methylnitrosoamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone(NNK),N-nitrosonornicotine(NNN),N-nitrosoanatabine(NAT),N-nitrosoanabasine(NAB),total tobacco-specific nitrosamines(TSNA),and N-nitrosodimethylamine(NDMA)were summarized.The information of daily tobacco consumption of smokers in 30 provinces of China was also collected.Then,the intakes of NNN,NNK,NAT,NAB,TSNAs,and NDMA via tobacco smoke were estimated as 1534ng/day,591 ng/day,685 ng/day,81 ng/day,2543 ng/day,and 484 ng/day by adult smokers in30 provinces,respectively.The Cancer risk(CR)values for NNN and NNK inhalation intake were further calculated as 1.44×10^(-5)and 1.95×10^(-4).The CR value for NDMA intake via tobacco smoke(inhalation:1.66×10^(-4))indicates that NDMA is similarly dangerous in tobacco smoke when compared with the TSNAs.In China,the CR values caused by average nitrosamines intake via various exposures and their order can be estimated as the following:smoke(3.75×10^(-4))>food(1.74×10^(-4))>drinking water(1.38×10^(-5)).Smokers in China averagely suffer 200%of extra Cancer risk caused by nitrosamines in tobacco when compared with non-smokers.

Genetic Polymorphism, Telomere Biology and Non-Small Lung Cancer risk

Recent genome-wide association studies （GWAS） have identified a number of chromosomal regions associated with the risk of lung cancer. Of these regions, single-nucleotide polymorphisms （SNPs）, especially rs2736100 located in the telomerase reverse transcriptase （TERT） gene show unique and significant association with non-small cell lung cancer （NSCLC） in a few subpopulations including women, nonsmokers, East Asians and those with adenocarcinoma, Recent studies have also linked rs2736100 with a longer telomere length and lung Cancer risk. In this review, we seek to summarize the relationship between these factors and to further link the underlying telomere biology to lung cancer etiology. We conclude that genetic alleles combined with environmental （e.g., less-smoking） and physiological factors （gender and age） that confer longer telomere length are strong risk factors for NSCLC. This linkage may be particularly relevant in lung adenocarcinoma driven by epidermal growth factor receptor （EGFR） mutations, as these mutations have also been strongly linked to female gender, less-smoking history, adenocarcinoma histology and East Asian ethnicity, By establishing this connection, a strong argument is made for further investigating of the involvement of these entities during the tumorigenesis of NSCLC.

CXCL12 G801A Polymorphism and Cancer risk: An Updated Meta-analysis

Many studies have reported the relationship between CXCL12 G801 A polymorphism and Cancer risk, with conflicting results. In this study, we tried to clarify the possibility that this polymorphism may increase Cancer risk by conducting an updated meta-analysis. Pub Med and EMbase were searched for case-control studies regarding the association of the gene polymorphism and Cancer risk. Data were extracted and odds ratios（ORs） with 95% confidence intervals（95% CIs） were used to assess the strength of the association. Heterogeneity among articles and publication bias was also assessed. Significantly increased risk for cancer was found（A vs. G： OR=1.26, 95% CI=1.13-1.40, P〈0.01; AA＋AG vs. GG： OR=1.33, 95% CI=1.16-1.52, P〈0.01）. In subgroup analysis, statistically elevated Cancer risk was found in both Asian and Caucasian populations（for Asian, AA＋AG vs. GG： OR=1.74, 95% CI=1.22-2.47, P〈0.01; for Caucasian, AA＋AG vs. GG： OR=1.24, 95% CI=1.09-1.42, P〈0.01）. Our result indicated that CXCL12 G801 A polymorphism is a risk factor for cancer. To validate the finding, further large-size case-control studies are warranted.

Objective Adopting a healthy lifestyle,including regular physical activity,is widely believed to decrease Cancer risk.This study aimed to quantitatively establish the dose-response relationships between total physical activity and the risk of breast,colon,lung,gastric,and liver cancers.Methods A systematic review and dose-response analysis were conducted using PubMed and Embase from January 1,1980 to March 20,2023.Prospective cohort studies that examined the association between physical activity and the risks of any of the 5 outcomes were included.The search was confined to publications in the English language with a specific focus on human studies.Physical activity is standardized by using the data from US National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys(NHANES)and the Global Burden of Disease 2019 database.Results A total of 98 studies,involving a combined population of 16,418,361 individuals,were included in the analysis.Among the included studies,57 focused on breast cancer,17 on lung cancer,23 on colon cancer,5 on gastric cancer,and 7 on liver cancer.Overall,elevated levels of physical activity exhibited an inverse correlation with the risk of cancer.The dose-response curve for lung cancer exhibited a non-linear pattern,with the greatest benefit risk reduction observed at 13,200 MET-minutes/week of physical activity,resulting in a 14.7%reduction in risk(relative risk 0.853,uncertainty interval 0.798 to 0.912)compared to the inactive population.In contrast,the dose-response curves for colon,gastric,breast,and liver cancers showed linear associations,indicating that heightened levels of total physical activity were consistently associated with reduced Cancer risks.However,the increase in physical activity yielded a smaller risk reduction for colon and gastric cancers compared to breast and liver cancers.Compared to individuals with insufficient activity(total activity levelrisk redu

Background The key components of metabolic syndrome （MS） are waist circumference,blood pressure,fast blood glucose,high density lipoprotein cholesterol （HDL-c） and triglycerides （TG）.These components have,separately and jointly,been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases.In this study,we aimed to explore the association between MS components and Cancer risk in a population-based cohort in China.Methods We established a population-based cohort with 17 779 individuals aged 35 and above at baseline in 2004 and 2005 in Changzhou,Jiangsu Province,China.All participants were face-to-face interviewed to complete a questionnaire and were accepted physical examinations including blood tests for glucose and lipids and physical measurements for obesity and blood pressure.In 2009,a total of 16 284 subjects （6886 men and 9398 women,91.6%） attended the flow-up interviews and the participants or their family members reported all the hospitalizations and diseases including cancer occurred during the follow-up period.Multivariate Cox regression was used to estimate the hazard ratios （HRs） of metabolic syndrome components and cancer incidence.Results There was a dose-response association between Cancer risk and the number of MS components presented at baseline （P for trend=0.012） and the HR （95% confidence interval （CI）） was 2.63 （1.27-5.45） for subjects carrying 3 or more metabolic syndrome components after adjustment for possible confounding factors.Specifically,the multivariate-adjusted HRs （95% CIs） for Cancer risk in subjects with central obesity,high fasting glucose,low HDL-c were 1.94 （1.01-3.74）,2.04 （1.10-3.77） and 2.05 （1.09-3.88）,respectively.Conclusions In this population-based,prospective cohort study in China,we found MS components,e.g.,central obesity,high fasting glucose,low HDL-c were risk factors for cancer development.Early intervention of MS components may be also beneficial to reduce cancer burden.

Dear Editor, Kai Wang and Linda B Cottler recently commented on our article entitled, ＂The association between sexual function and prostate Cancer risk in US veterans＂ published in Asian Journal ofAndrology.They made the good point that sexual function could be a clinical symptom of low serum testosterone, and that men with low testosterone may be using testosterone replacement therapy （TRT） which could be confounding the associations between sexual function and prostate Cancer risk.

Background:cancer incidence and mortality have received critical attention during the long-term management of morbidities in patients with autoimmune diseases(AIDs).This study aimed to investigate and compare the risk of cancer associated with five major AIDs in a large-scale Chinese cohort.Methods:A total of 8,120 AID patients consecutively admitted to a national tertiary referral center in China were included and followed-up for 38,726.55 patient-years,including those with systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE),rheumatoid arthritis(RA),Sjoren’s syndrome(SS),systemic scleroderma(SSc),and idiopathic inflammatory myositis(IIM).Demographic data,cancer incidence,predilecting sites and cancer onset time were recorded and compared among the five AIDs.Results:Four hundred and thirty(5.3%)patients developed cancer.Their median agewas 57.5 years and AID durationwas 79.8 months.The estimated total standardized incidence ratio(SIR)of cancer in AIDs patients was 3.37,with the highest SIR observed in IIM(4.31),followed by RA(3.99),SSc(3.77),SS(2.88)and SLE(2.58).The increased SIR of cancers in AID patients showed a female predominance(female vs.male:3.59 vs.2.77)and younger patient involvement(agecancer and they had a high risk of ovarian cancer.RA was associated with a wide distribution of scancers,including non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma,gynecologic,urinary tract,thyroid gland and lung cancers.SSc patients had increased SIRs for developing cervical uterine,lung,and breast cancers.Conclusion:Patients with five major AIDs in China had an increased risk of developing cancer,with a predominance in women and younger patients,although cancer incidence,predilection sites and cancer onset time may vary greatly in each

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) are common toxic compounds in environment. Previous study showed inhalation is one of the major intake routes for human exposure to PAHs. In this study, PM bounded PAHs were obtained from traffic(2 sites), industry(1 site), urban setting(10 sites) and suburban setting(2 sites) in winter and summer time in Xi’an during June and December 201. The average concentrations of Ba P were from 9.1 to 15.8 ng/m and 1. to 4.1 ng/m in different settings in winter and summer. The median Ba Peq concentrations of inhalation exposure were from 255.8-1120 ng/day in suburban, and the data was from 176.6 to 986.8 ng/day in urban in wintertime, whereas it was from .9 to 160.5 ng/day and from 28.8 to 144.2 ng/day for suburban and urban residents in summertime, respectively. The average incremental lifetime Cancer risk(ILCR) values for all groups in winter were from 2.8×10 to 2.6×10 and 1.02×10 to 2.21×10 in suburban and urban, respectively. The average value was from 4.9×10 to 5.72×10 and .15×10 to 4.72×10 for suburban and urban residents, respectively, in summer. Suburban has higher risks than in urban. And adult showed potential risks especially in winter than other age groups. The sensitivity analysis results showed that the cancer slope factor(SF) and EI were the two most important factors for all groups in winter and summer health risk assessment.

Biopsychosocial impact of discrimination on Cancer risk and outcome: A conceptual review

Discrimination,a major social factor influencing health,can influence both the risk and course of cancer.The medical and psychological mechanisms through which discrimination can impact the onset and spread of cancer are explored in depth in this conceptual evaluation.In addition to investigating the ethical aspects of discrimination in cancer research,it also studies the effects of bias on cancer detection and therapy.In addition,this review provides suggestions for reducing the effect of discrimination on Cancer risk and outcomes.Discrimination,in particular,can trigger the growth and spread of cancer via various pathways,including stress,inflammation,and changes in epigenetic patterns.It can also affect the immune system,making the body more vulnerable to the proliferation of cancerous cells.Discrimination can result in hindrances or delays in the process of cancer screening and treatment,and it can influence the quality of care for individuals suffering from cancer.This can contribute to the presence of disparities in terms of cancer vulnerability,occurrence,mortality,and survival rates among different demographic groups.Various measures can be implemented to mitigate the impact of discrimination on cancer vulnerability and outcomes.These measures address the underlying causes of discrimination,ensure that all individuals have access to exceptional cancer care,promote the acquisition of cultural proficiency and anti-bias training by healthcare providers,and develop and implement interventions to reduce discrimination’s impact on cancer vulnerability,screening,and treatment.

Measurement of Radon Concentration and Estimation of Cancer risk in Twenty-Four Model Houses in the Town of Koudougou

The objective of our study is to evaluate the concentration of radon (86Rn) inside houses in the town of Koudougou in order to estimate its impact on the health of the population. Indeed, when uranium-rich minerals are found near the surface of the ground, radon concentrations can reach tens of becquerels per cubic meter in enclosed spaces. Given the nature of the geological base of Burkina Faso, this situation is quite probable and certain places that are sometimes poorly ventilated (house, school, office, etc.) can have radon levels high enough to constitute a health problem for occupants. Thus, twenty-four (24) sample houses were identified. In each house, the Corentium digital detector was between 0.8 m and 2 m for at least one week in a place where the occupants estimate that they spend more time of time and measure the concentration of radon in the long term and short term. The recorded data allowed us to determine the Absorbed Dose and the Annual Effective Dose of radon gas for each house in order to estimate the risk of cancer and the probable Number of Cases of Lung cancer per million inhabitants. Thus, the results indicate that the long-term radon concentration varies between 6 Bq/m3 and 285 Bq/m3 respectively in houses 11 and 4 compared to 1 Bq/m3 to 208 Bq/m3 in the short term in the same houses. Also, in the long term, in control houses 1, 3 and 4, the radon level is above the recommended threshold interval. For the short term, these are houses 1, 3, 4 and 17 respectively with 110 Bq/m3, 142 Bq/m3, 208 Bq/m3 and 105 Bq/m3. As for the long-term and short-term effective doses, only houses 1, 3, 4, 17 and 24 have values between 3 - 10 Sv/year. The estimation of the relative risk of lung cancer gives values relatively close to unity and between 1.006 and 1.142 with an average of 1.035 and that of the Number of Lung cancer Cases per million inhabitants gives values between 8 and 166 with an average of 42.
