Vitamin A administration at birth promotes calf growth and intramuscular fat development in Angus beef cattle

Background: Marbling, or intramuscular fat, is an important factor contributing to the palatability of beef. Vitamin A, through its active metabolite, retinoic acid, promotes the formation of new fat cells(adipogenesis). As intramuscular adipogenesis is active during the neonatal stage, we hypothesized that vitamin A administration during the neonatal stage would enhance intramuscular adipogenesis and ***: Angus steer calves(n = 30), in a completely randomized design, were randomly allotted to three treatment groups at birth, receiving 0, 150,000, or 300,000 IU of vitamin A at both birth and one month of age.A biopsy of the biceps femoris muscle was collected at two months of age. After weaning at 210 d of age, steers were fed a backgrounding diet in a feedlot until 308 d of age, when they were transitioned to a high concentrate finishing diet and implanted with trenbolone/estradiol/tylosin mixture. Steers were harvested at an average of 438 d of age. All diets were formulated to meet nutrient ***: Weaning weight and weight during the backgrounding phase were linearly increased(P < 0.05) by vitamin A level, though no difference in body weight was observed at harvest. Intramuscular fat of steers at 308 d of age, measured by ultrasound, quadratically increased(P < 0.05) with vitamin A level from 4.0±0.26 % to 4.9±0.26 %.Similarly, carcass marbling score in the ribeye quadratically increased(P < 0.05).Conclusion: Administration of vitamin A at birth increased weaning weight and enhanced marbling fat ***, vitamin A administration provides a practical method for increasing marbling and early growth of beef cattle.

Improving Energy Metabolism of Deproteinized Extract of calf Blood Through Regulation of Hmgcs2y Cptla, Angptl4, Cyp8bl, and Ehhadh Genes in Mice

Herein, we described the physicochemical properties of deproteinized extract of calf blood(DECB) and established a hypoxia model treated with or without DECB to detect the sugar, lactic acid, protein, and ATP contents of mice and then identified and analyzed the differentially expressed genes between two groups using mRNA expression chip. According to the results of the airtight hypoxia experiment, mice in the model+DECB group had a signifi? cantly prolonged time of hypoxia tolerance compared with the model group. The biochemical test indicated that DECB could significantly increase the level of sugar, ATP and proteins and reduce the amount of lactic acid in mice. It also revealed that Hmgcs2, Cptla, Angptl4, Cyp8b], and Ehhadh genes were involved in mice energy metabolism, and were closely associated witli metabolic signaling pathway. These results suggest that DECB might be a potential drug to treat metabolic diseases. Among the genes with differential expression under hypoxia, Angptl4, Cyp8bl, and Ehhadh were critical factors for sugar metabolism. Hmgcs2 provided energy directly, and Cptla regulated cellular inflammatory responses, promoting energy metabolism.

Low calf Circumference Predicts Nutritional Risks in Hospitalized Patients Aged More Than 80 Years

Objective The aim of this study was to determine whether low calf circumference(CC) could predict nutritional risk and the cutoff values of CC for predicting nutritional risk in hospitalized patients aged ≥ 80 *** A total of 1,234 consecutive patients aged ≥ 80 years were enrolled in this *** admission, demographic data, CC, and laboratory parameters were *** with Nutritional Risk Screening 2002(NRS-2002) total score ≥ 3 were considered as having nutritional *** CC values were significantly lower in patients with nutritional risk compared to those in patients without nutritional risk [27.00(24.50-31.00) vs.31.00(29.00-33.50], P < 0.001].CC was negatively correlated with age and nutritional risk *** regression analysis of nutritional risk revealed that body mass index, albumin level, hemoglobin level, cerebral infarction, neoplasms, and CC(OR, 0.897;95% confidence interval, 0.856-0.941;P < 0.001) were independent impact factors of nutritional *** risk scores increased with a decrease in *** men, the best CC cutoff value for predicting nutritional risk according to the NRS-2002 was 29.75 *** women, the cutoff value was 28.25 *** CC is a simple, noninvasive, and valid anthropometric measure to predict nutritional risk for hospitalized patients aged ≥ 80 years.

Two new ruthenium polypyridine complexes. L2RuL2+ where L=2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) and 2, 9-dimethyl-1. 10-phenanthroline (dmp); L' is Schiff base prepared from condensation of 4. 5 diazafluoren-9-one (AFO) and aniline. have been prepared and characterized by elemental analyses, electronic absorption, IR spectra. The binding of the complexes to calf thymus DNA has beeninvestics by absorption. emission spectra and circular dichroism spectroscopy. Experimental results show these two complexes bind to DNA by electrostatic mode and non-interactive binding mode.

Differential diagnosis of isolated calf muscle vein thrombosis and gastrocnemius hematoma by high-frequency ultrasound

Background Differential diagnosis of isolated calf muscle vein thrombosis （ICMVT） and gastrocnemius hematoma is essential for early identification of deep vein thrombosis （DVT）.This study aimed to investigate the diagnostic value of high-frequency color Doppler ultrasound for differential diagnosis of ICMVT and gastrocnemius *** A retrospective case series of 35 ICMVT （M∶F,21∶14; mean age （64.5±10.6） years） and 23 gastrocnemius hematoma （M∶F,16∶7; mean age （75.4±11.8） years） patients with bilateral/unilateral lower limb pain was conducted between January 2006 and September *** and the morphology of high-frequency color Doppler ultrasonography of the lower limb deep vein,great saphenous vein,calf muscles,skin,and soft tissue were *** ICMVT hypoechoic signals were characterized by long,tube-like masses on longitudinal sections and oval masses on transverse sections,with apparent muscle thrombosis boundaries,distal and proximal venous connections,and,often,lower limb *** hematoma hypoechoic signals were characterized by large volumes,enhanced posterior hematoma echo,hyperechoic muscle boundaries,no hematoma blood flow,and no DVT,and clear differences in trauma/exercise-and oral anticoagulant-induced hematomas were readily *** to the measurement,the ratio of long diameter/transverse diameter （D/T） in ICMVT patients was about less than 2.0,whereas in gastrocnemius hematoma patients the ratio was more than *** stage isoechoic and hypoechoic signals were detected with gradually increasing ovular anechoic *** muscle fibers in the hematoma due to muscle fractures were *** High-frequency color Doppler ultrasound was found to be a sensitive and reliable method for differential diagnosis of ICMVT and gastrocnemius hematoma due to trauma and exercise or prolonged oral anticoagulant use.

The binding of Rulpdphen2+ to calf thymus DNA was inveatigated using absorption fluorescence and CD spectroscopies, where pdphen is the planar ligand pyrido[3. 2- f] [1, 7] phenanthroline,L=2, 2' -bipyridine, phenanthroline. 2, 9-dimethyl phenanthroline and 5-nitro-phenanthroline. All coordination componds show abaorption typochromicity associated with binding to calf thymus DNA .Ru(bipy) pdphen3+ and Rn (phen) pdphen+ also show fluoreacence intensities and excited state lifetime Increase becanse of the interaction of coordination compounds with calf thymus DNA .CD apectra of dialylatea indicate enantioselectivity associated withe binding to DNA .

Painless swollen calf muscles of a 75-year-old patient caused by bilateral venous malformations

A 75-year-old man presented with knee pain due to medial osteoarthritis of the knee in the orthopedic outpatient clinic. Conservative treatment was started with steroid infiltration. Besides his knee complaint reported a bilateral painless swollen calf muscle without traumatic cause, and also without any pain at night, fever or medical illness. On physical examination the soleus muscle had a swollen aspect in both calfs. The skin appeared normal without deformities and the arterial pulsations were intact. An X-ray did not show abnormalities in the tibia. Magnetic resonance imaging of the legs revealed bilateral multiple saccular intramuscular venous malformations involving the soleus muscle. Intramuscular venous malformations in skeletal muscles are rare, especially when the occurrence is bilateral. Bilateral venous malformations have the potential to be missed because of the intramuscular localization. Symptoms of intramuscular venous malformation can be often mild and overlap with nonexercise related compartment syndrome, claudication, lymphedema and post thrombotic syndrome or muscle strains.

FSH Promoting Proliferation of calf Sertoli Cells Through Wnt/β-catenin Signaling Pathway with CDC25B Being Involved

The aim of this experiment was to investigate whether FSH could regulate the proliferation of calf Sertoli cells and the relationship with CDC25 B through Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. The experimental method was to culture Sertoli cells with different concentrations of FSH(40, 80, 120 and 150 ng · mL) and to treat the cultured cells with XAV939(β-catenin inhibitor) and to detect the expression of CDC25 B, CDC2, C-MYC and β-catenin. The results of the experiment showed that FSH could promote the proliferation of cells and its effect was good at 80 ng · mLconcentration. FSH could promote the expression of CDC25 B, CDC2, C-MYC and β-catenin. The expression of C-MYC and β-catenin in group FSH+XAV939 was lower than that in group FSH. There was no difference in mRNA expression of CDC25 B in group FSH and group FSH+XAV939. The protein expression of CDC25 B in group FSH+XAV939 was lower than that in group FSH. The conclusion was that FSH could promote the proliferation of calf Sertoli cells through Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. CDC25 B was upregulated by FSH and CDC2 could promote the proliferation of calf Sertoli cells. The protein level of CDC25 B was affected by Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway.

Evaluation of homeopathic treatments in early lactation in buffalo cows and neonatal mortality in buffalo calf

The trial was conducted on thirty buffalo cows subdivided in three groups. In the immediate pre-calving, 2.5 ml of Echinacea purpurea were orally administered to the first group (A) and, after calving, Nux vomica, Chelidonium and Lycopodium were administered at 7 days intervals. The second group (B) was only subjected to the post-calving treatment, while the third group (C) represented the control group. Immediately after calving two groups of calves were formed. The first group received 5 granules of Pyrogenium in the first days of life and then for 10 days the 0.5 ml of E. purpurea. The second group did not receive any remedy. Before the calving, in conventional farm twenty buffalo cows (D group) were vaccinated. Remedies administration did not affect milk protein content, milk lipid contents and the achievement of the lactation peak. Blood samples showed that total protein, albumin and globulin levels were lower in group A, compared to groups B and C. Cholesterol and urea were lower in the treated groups than in the control. We therefore conclude that the use of homeopathic remedies are a chance to improve animal welfare and their productive characteristics.
