In this case study we explore cicero’s processes of framing and image-building regarding the concept of an anti-mother/-*** this we examine cicero’s portrayal of Sassia,a woman who features as one of the main antagonists of his speech Pro *** analyse cicero’s depiction of Sassia’s evilness towards her son,Cluentius,through the lens of frame and framing *** doing so,this case study aims to present a deeper understanding of cicero’s stratagems(e.g.,priming,calling for action;nudging,pushing someone towards action;and affordance,offering a frame to act outside of or within)which were employed in order to devise a negative characterisation of *** application of this methodological approach to cicero’s framing of Sassia provides a new scope for analysing not only the classical text itself but also for the analysis of ancient human society to which it belonged.

On cicero’s Critique of Reason

In contemporary thinking, "reason" has become synonymous with "correctness" to the extent that it is even capable of prescribing laws to nature. Ancient philosophers, including Plato and cicero, offered a holistic, profound, and clear understanding of its connotations. As a symbol that distinguishes humans from animals and the requisite means or tools for seeking the truth, reason is characterized by both divinity and nobility. It also maintains a degree of neutrality, with the right use of reason as the key to determining its nature. In essence, reason is a type of calculation that can be used to do either good or evil. Hence, it must be supplemented by divinity and virtue. As a cognitive faculty, to reason is to perceive one’s own limits and practice moderation, temperance, and prudence, thus maintaining a full grasp of the world and becoming a useful being.

Tactics of Persuasion in cicero’s Letters during the War of Mutina with the Military Commanders

cicero tried to take advantage of the War of Mutina in spring 44 BC,to vilify Mark Antony who,in his view,was the mortal foe to the res publica *** order to achieve his aim,cicero used his letter-exchange with the military commanders in North and West Italy as well as in Africa to exert his infl uence and assure their alliance against *** employed various tactics in his letters to persuade and integrate those commanders into his *** tactics functioned for some time during the war but failed *** to the formidable alliance of the Caesarian party and the still scattered powers of the Republicans,cicero’s maneuver to remove Antony only by means of political advocacy failed.

cicero's Rhetoric ***'s Aesthetics:A Small Comparison of Decorum of cicero With Magnitudo of Baumgarten

This paper made a comparison of cicero’s Rhetoric with Baumgarten’s Aesthetics,for answering the question of how Baumgarten built the system of ars aesthetica on the basis of cicero’s *** paper demonstrated how Baumgarten’s key ideas of pulchritudo and magnitudo were related with cicero’s decorum and modus ***’s magnitudo originated in cicero’s ***,however,differentiated the idea pulchritudo from the cicero’s decorum for approaching the issue of pulchritudo ipsa.

Stasis Salience and the Enthymemic Thesis

The argumentative stasis theory and enthymeme principles richly complement each other but they have rarely been investigated jointly. We correct this oversight first with a principled re-analysis of the stasis tradition, resulting in a double-layer stasis system: cicero's later system(in De Oratore and Topica) with "action" stasis' subclassification, modified by Kenneth Burke's dramatic pentad of act, scene, agent, agency, purpose(in A Grammar of Motives). Then inspired by Ronald Langacker's salience theory in cognitive linguistics, we secure two stasis deployment strategies: selection(profile against base) and prominence(trajector against landmark). Stasis theory thus solidified, we examine how it interacts with the two central aspects of the enthymemic thesis: incompleteness and probability and how the enthymemic thesis helps explain the force of stasis theory. This inquiry contributes to rhetorical theory and criticism; argumentation studies; and linguistics, by showing the reach of salience theory.

自然法学的义务理论是构建法治理论的重要基础。但古老的古希腊哲学家们曾流传过以功利义务论为表现形式的义务观念，并建构了功利义务论的基本原则及其履行义务的方式。以西塞罗为代表的自然法学派的思想家们通过理解和解释大自然对人类的命令，在批判功利义务观念的基础上，提出了德性义务论。在没有权利观念的时代，德性义务观念的普遍展开，是人类有序建构社会秩序的观念基础，也是权利观念诞生的重要渊源。没有权利观念的德性义务论为近代法治国家建设留下了深刻启示，特别是对我国今天的某些防疫措施制定提供了值得借鉴的法理依据。
