Leaf beetles Gastrophysa viridula have attracted recently increased research interest from various points of view, since they are：（i） pest insects in rhubarb crops; （ii） potential biocontrol agents of dock plants Rumex spp. in grasslands; and （iii） a model species in ecological studies on insect population dynamics, biochemistry, behavior, biomechanics and biomimetics. The continuous rearing of beetles at standardized conditions may help to unify the fitness state of different individuals, allowing a better comparison of experimental results. The present communication suggests a modular space- and time-saving rearing method ofG. viridula in stackable faunariums under laboratory conditions, which has been successfully established and continuously used over the last 5 years. Several developmental stages were kept in separate boxes, and multiple generations were kept simultaneously, depending on the required number of beetles.

A Study of the Genus Podagricomela Heikertinger (Coleoptera:chrysomelidae:Alticinae) from China

Ten species of Podagricomela Heikertinger from China are studied. They are Podagricomela apicipennis (Jacoby), P. cupera Wang, P. cyanea Chen, P. flavitibialis Wang, P. geminata Chen et Zia, P. nigricollis Chen, P. nigripes Medvedev, P. parva Chen et Zia, P. shirahatai (Ch?j?), and P. weisei Heikertinger. Among them, P. nigripes Medvedev is recorded for the first time from China. A key to species from China is given. Illustrations of the male aedeagus and female spermatheca of each species are also given. The geographical distribution in China is analyzed briefly. The result indicates that Podagricomela mainly occurs in southern China, southwestern China, central China and north China, and the distribution center of this genus is in China. They always feed on Rutaceae.

Agricultural pests can develop behavioral resistance to insecticides by choosing to feed or oviposit on insecticide-free hosts. As young larvae have relatively low mobility, oviposition preferences from female adults may play a critical role in shaping the evolutionary trajectory of pest populations. While oviposition avoidance of insecticide-treated hosts was found in different agriculture pests, it remains unclear whether female adults actively choose to occupy insecticide-free hosts. To address this question, we investigated feeding and oviposition preferences between imidacloprid-treated and imidacloprid-free plants in the Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say, a major potato pest. We performed behavioral choice assays on two strains that differed in both fecundity and insecticide resistance. We found that one strain preferred to feed on the insecticide-free plants and that this preference is not innate. Meanwhile, the other strain chose plants for feeding and oviposition randomly. Further analyses of the moving patterns of the beetles suggested that the oviposition preference in the first strain is likely due to active learning. A strain of L. decemlineata avoided imidacloprid-treated plants for feeding and oviposition in choice assays while another strain chose plants randomly. First feeding is random in both strains. The oviposition avoidance behavior might be an active response due to learning from feeding on both choices of plants. image

The impact ofArgopistes tsekooni Chen （Coleoptera： chrysomelidae）, a herbivore, on Chinese privet, Ligustrum sinense Lout. （Scrophulariales： Oleaceae）, an invasive shrub in the United States, was studied in China. Five densities of adults were inoc- ulated into 3-year-old potted Chinese privet plants in cages under field conditions for 1 month. Plants exposed to high densities of adults were severely damaged and the aboveground portions of some were killed, while the survival rates of adult A. tsekooni were comparatively high. The amount of new growth of the main stem, the number of new leaves, and oven-dried biomass were significantly reduced by the combined feeding of larvae and adults. Above-ground plant mortality was 100% when plants were exposed to 24 and 30 adults/plant. In this study A. tsekooni had a significant negative impact on Chinese privet growing in pots, which suggests that it may be a promising candidate for biological control of Chinese privet in the field in North America.
