Disaster Awareness and Preparedness Among Older Adults in canada Regarding Floods, Wildfires, and Earthquakes

Older adults are significantly impacted by natural hazards and disasters that are exacerbated by climate change. Understanding their awareness and preparedness is essential for enhancing disaster resilience. This study investigated the attitudes, actions, and recommendations of older adults regarding natural hazards that pose risks in their geographic area—specifically floods, wildfires, and/or earthquakes in canada. Methods for this study included survey and focus groups with older adults(n = 161 and n = 10, respectively) and other high-risk groups from across canada, that are vulnerable to these natural hazards. The main findings from this study are that current awareness and preparedness among older adults is low, though stronger perceptions of risks are associated with risks specific to geographic locations where respondents live. Several barriers, such as hazard vulnerability misperceptions, cost-related reasons, and lack of hazard awareness have resulted in low awareness and preparedness among these populations. The two main recommendations arising from this research are:(1) improve awareness and preparedness with tailor-made emergency preparedness materials for older adults;and(2) adopt community-based approaches to disaster preparedness through existing community groups to strengthen social connections with a focus on locally specific hazards. The findings from this research can be applied to other hazards, including heatwaves and pandemics.

Severe Global Environmental Issues Caused by canada’s Record-Breaking Wildfires in 2023

Due to the record-breaking wildfires that occurred in canada in 2023,unprecedented quantities of air pollutants and greenhouse gases were released into the *** wildfires had emitted more than 1.3 Pg CO_(2)and 0.14 Pg CO_(2)equivalent of other greenhouse gases(GHG)including CH4 and N_(2)O as of 31 *** wildfire-related GHG emissions constituted more than doubled canada’s planned cumulative anthropogenic emissions reductions in 10 years,which represents a significant challenge to climate mitigation *** model simulations showed that the Canadian wildfires impacted not only the local air quality but also that of most areas in the northern hemisphere due to long-range transport,causing severe PM_(2.5)pollution in the northeastern United States and increasing daily mean PM_(2.5)concentration in northwestern China by up to 2μg *** observed maximum daily mean PM_(2.5)concentration in New York City reached 148.3μg m-3,which was their worst air quality in more than 50 years,nearly 10 times that of the air quality guideline(i.e.,15μg m-3)issued by the World Health Organization(WHO).Aside from the direct emissions from forest fires,the peat fires beneath the surface might smolder for several months or even longer and release substantial amounts of CO_(2).The substantial amounts of greenhouse gases from forest and peat fires might contribute to the positive feedback to the climate,potentially accelerating global *** better understand the comprehensive environmental effects of wildfires and their interactions with the climate system,more detailed research based on advanced observations and Earth System Models is essential.

The state of mountain research in canada

Nearly a quarter of canada’s landmass is covered by mountainous terrain,making mountains an important aspect of the physical and human geography of the *** areas in canada have motivated a great deal of research activity,yet the state of mountain research in the country has never been systematically characterized,precluding a detailed understanding of what is being studied,when,where,how,and by *** response,we conducted a systematic scoping review to rigorously identify,collate,and critically examine existing peer-reviewed articles related to mountains in canada.2,888 articles were included in our review,which reveals strong biases towards work in the natural sciences and in the mountain west,with little work to date in the social and health sciences or in other mountainous regions of the *** results demonstrate that canada is among the most productive contributors to mountain research globally,but that topical and geographical biases in existing research effort leave important gaps that must be addressed to successfully navigate challenges and opportunities facing mountain areas in *** provide a roadmap to guide future mountain-focused research activities in the country.

At the onset of the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic,pediatric emergency department(ED)visits decreased worldwide by an estimated 30%-89%[1].In canada,there was a 58%reduction in pediatric ED visits in March and April 2020 relative to the same months in previous years[2].These reductions have been attributed to a decrease in non-severe acute respiratory syndrome corona-virus 2(SARS-CoV-2)infections in children resulting from confinement and public health measures,as well as a shift toward virtual care[3,4].

This article begins with a review of the publications by *** ***,a Canadian-Chinese traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)scholar,educator and writer,and founder of a Vancouver-based TCM *** has translated many TCM classics and written books extensively on TCM education,TCM clinical practice and Mandarin-Chinese *** from his widespread prominence as one of the representative English translators of Huangdi Neijing(The Yellow Emperor’s Inner Classic),*** is also noted for his pioneering role in the promotion of TCM education in British Columbia,where he lived and worked for more than half of his *** making references to and drawing lessons from ***’s four-decade-long efforts to help TCM gain legal status and to promote wider application of TCM in canada,this article also puts forth suggestions for overseas TCM education and international TCM standards for building a global community with a shared future.
