Objective:To determine the levels of burnout among Greek nurses during the first wave of Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic and to investigate the relationship among levels of burnout,satisfaction and concern about information,personal protection equipment(PPE),and safety for ***:A cross-sectional study was *** were collected by using the burnout subscale of the Greek version of the Professional Quality of Life *** concerning satisfaction and concern about information,PPE,and safety for COVID-19 were *** sampling method was *** statistics and multiple linear regression analysis were applied,and distributions were tested for their symmetry using Bloom’s ***:The sample comprised of 301 nurses working in public and private hospitals in Greece.A moderate level of burnout was found among the Greek nurses(mean=29.95,±4.75).Regarding satisfaction and concern about information,PPE,and safety for COVID-19,nurses expressed overall low satisfaction with a mean score of 1.96(±0.77),and high levels of concern with a mean score of 3.19(±0.85).Increased satisfaction regarding the information provided was significantly associated with decreased levels of burnout(β=-1.32,Pburnout(β=0.83,P=0.010).Conclusions:Greek nurses expressed low satisfaction concerning information,PPE,and safety for COVID-19 and high levels of concern of possible COVID-19 ***,a moderate level of burnout was found.

A Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) Intervention to Improve Resilience and Mitigate Symptoms of burnout syndrome in Critical Care Nurses: Results of a Randomized Trial

Objective: Critical care nurses work in a challenging intensive care (ICU) environment that results in work-related psychological distress. Our objective was to pilot an in-person or virtual mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) program enhanced resilience and a similarly designed attention control group. Methods: We randomized ICU nurses with symptoms of burnout syndrome and decreased resilience to an MBCT program or a similarly formatted book club control. Our primary outcome was change in resilience as measured by the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC). Results: One-hundred one nurses completed study-related procedures. Overall, 70% had baseline symptoms of anxiety and 26% had symptoms of depression. For the in-person cohorts, there was no statistical difference between intervention and control groups regarding the total number of sessions attended (3.85 days ± 1.4 versus 3.75 days ± 0.15;p = 0.64). Using the Client/Patient Satisfaction Questionnaire-8 (CSQ-8), satisfaction scores were higher in the intervention group for weeks two through four of the program: p = 0.03, 0.0003, 0.007 respectively. There was no difference in the change in CD-RISC scores between the two groups (mean difference: treatment = 5.0, control = 7.0;p = 0.30). The online intervention cohort had greater improvements in the change of their median emotional exhaustion burnout scores when compared to the in-person intervention cohorts (-5 [-8 to -1.5] vs. 2 [-5 to 8], p = 0.049). Conclusions: We developed a feasible and acceptable in-person and online MBCT-ICU intervention that did not increase resilience scores in ICU nurses when compared to an attention control group. These results could help guide the proper design of larger trials to determine the efficacy of other resilience interventions.

Background： Acupuncture can not only be used for well-known diseases, but also for so-called modern lifestyle-related diseases. Using innovative methods like e.g. new analyses of heart rate variability （HRV）, it is also possible to investigate diseases like burnout syndrome, ie., qi deficiency in Chinese medicine （CM）. Objective： The main object of this research protocol is to perform research on the relationship of burnout syndrome and heart rate （HR） and HRV. Methods： A total of 175 patients with burnout syndrome （qi deficiency syndrome） in five groups and 35 healthy volunteers will be investigated. Based on random numbers generated by computer and concealed in opaque envelops, the patients will be assigned to four acupuncture groups using Zusanli （ST 36） acupuncture stimulation, Guanyuan （CV4） acupuncture stimulation, both points, and both points with Streitberger device respectively, and a moxibustion group using both points mentioned above, with 35 cases in each group. Altogether four different experiments are planned. Experiment 1 includes 70 subjects and is a comparison between a burnout group and a control group （healthy volunteers）. The evaluation parameters are different scores and indices of HR and HRV. Experiment 2 includes 140 subjects and compares the efficacy of different acupuncture points. In experiment 3 （105 subjects）, acupuncture and moxibustion should be compared to healthy volunteers. Experiment 4 （70 subjects） investigates the long-term therapeutic effects of acupuncture and moxibustion on the scores of qi deficiency and HR/HRV in qi deficiency patients. In both the acupuncture and moxibustion groups, a total of 10 treatments will be performed. Conclusions： The joint research aims at the scientific evaluation of CM, mainly in the field of HRV. This parameter could be a very good indicator of the state of health and can be influenced by different acupuncture methods, as shown in the past.

The Phenomenon of Oncology Nurses’ Tendency to Change Duties in Greek Public Hospitals: A Study of Its Causes and Suggestions

Background: The concept of job satisfaction is of great importance regarding its impact on employees’ productivity and efficiency. Especially for oncology nurses has become apparent over the past decades that job satisfaction is a determinant factor not only for the quality of services they provide but also of their tendency to change duties and resign from workplace. While this phenomenon is vastly described by the literature, no survey that investigates nursing personnel’s tendency to resign from workplace has been conducted in Greece. Objectives: To investigate oncology nurses’ job satisfaction while examining the causes of their dissatisfaction in regard to their tendency to change duties, either by departing from the oncology field or by resigning. Material and Method: Using a structured questionnaire, a survey was conducted in four hospitals in the region of Attica that fall within the Greek National Health System, ESY. The research sample comprised 278 oncology nurses, men and women, with varied work experience. The data were analyzed using the SPSS software, applying descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, and Principal Component Analysis. Results: Our findings concerning participants’ job satisfaction were mainly positive. Most of the oncology nurses partaking in the study expressed their willingness to remain in their current workplace, as their placements enable them to diffuse in their tasks the knowledge and experience previously acquired. Conclusion: As oncology nurses’ job satisfaction influences their overall performance and dedication in their profession, parameters as working conditions, equal distribution of the workload, independent decision making and seniors’ management recognition of their work, need to be considered as primarily fields of improvement. Genome-wide associations, polygenic risk, and Mendelian randomization reveal limited interactions between John Henryism and cynicism
