The Built environment provides a habitat for the most sophisticated mammal in our universe,the human being.Developments in science and technology are forcing us to reconsider the priority of human needs in current theories of architecture and the Built environment.Newly developed theories and methodologies in neuroscience have allowed us to improve and deepen our knowledge of human experience in the Built environment.The potential of the relationship between neuroscience and architecture for knowledge creation generates an increasing interest in theoretical and methodological approaches to explore this intersection.Thus,a common ground on which to conduct interdisciplinary studies investigating developing and emerging concepts at the intersection must be established.However,few reviews in the literature have systematically examined developing and emerging concepts at the intersection of neuroscience and architecture.The present review aims to examine the existing literature systematically to explain the influence of the Built environment on human experience by using approaches from neuroscience by examining the conceptualizations in the field.The study is conducted as a systematic qualitative review that analyzes and synthesizes the developing and emerging concepts that have appeared in the ever-evolving literature.The study concludes with an overall discussion about these concepts as a means of deeply understanding the influence of the Built environment on human experience,responses to the environment based on approaches from neuroscience,and their potential for providing further directions for future research.

Built Environment and Energy Application Engineering(BEEAE),namely Heating,Ventilating,Air Conditioning and Refrigerating(HVAC&R),is one of the international accreditation programs.Its knowledge system of professional theory and professional education in accredited engineering academic programs must meet the requirements of the relevant international engineering certification.In view of professional engineers and technicians training of BEEAE,the professional training programs and the knowledge system are compared and explored in line with the international certification criteria.This study compares the items and requirements of different international certification criteria,and summarizes the experienced methods of education training.The undergraduate education and training programs are then improved in accordance with the requirements from international certification criteria.The BEEAE education training schemes should combine the knowledge system of the national professional guidance standards with the items from international certification criteria.

Engineering management research objects have gradually been transformed from micro-scale projects to macro-scale Built environment.Built environment has driven the advancement of civilization through human history.From the Stone Age to the modem era,Built environment,which refers to manmade surroundings,has provided the setting for human activities.Built environment has undergone developments and evolution processes as civilization grew.Today,technological advancements cause influences of Built environment to encompass every aspect of life,as material,spatial and cultural products of the human labor force,which combines material factors and energy in a lively way of work and in forms.However,the concept of Built environment remains unclear.Built environment faces a major challenge,such as the use of science and technology to solve key national and global issues.Thus,the definitions of Built environment were systematically reviewed and summarized from different perspectives and levels to address these issues.The grand challenges of Built environment,including climate change and energy consumption,urbanization and infrastructure construction,growth,and innovation,were summarized.Furthermore,the corresponding management issues and future development strategies were proposed to solve identified challenges of Built environment.

Background:Cross-sectional studies provide useful insight about the associations between the Built environment and physical activity(PA),particularly when reasons for neighborhood choice are considered.Our study analyzed the relationship between levels of weekly transportation and leisure PA among 3 neighborhood designs,statistically adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics and reasons for neighborhood choice.Methods:A stratified random sample of adults(age>20 years)living in Calgary(Canada)neighborhoods with different neighborhood designs(grid,warped-grid,and curvilinear)and socioeconomic status completed a self-administered questionnaire capturing PA,sociodemographic characteristics,and reasons for neighborhood choice(response rate=10.1%;n=1023).Generalized linear models estimated associations between neighborhood design and transportation and leisure PA outcomes(participation(any vs.none)and volume(metabolic equivalent:h/week)),adjusting for neighborhood socioeconomic status,sociodemographic characteristics(gender,age,ethnicity,education,household income,marital status,children,vehicle access,dog ownership,and injury),and reasons for neighborhood choice(e.g.,proximity and quality of recreational and utilitarian destinations,proximity to work,highway access,aesthetics,and sense of community).Results:Overall,854 participants had resided in their neighborhood for at least 12 months and provided complete data.Compared with those living in curvilinear neighborhoods,grid neighborhood participants had greater odds(p<0.05)of participating in any transportation walking(odds ratio(OR)=2.17),transportation and leisure cycling(OR=2.39 and OR=1.70),active transportation(OR=2.16),and high-intensity leisure PA(≥6 metabolic equivalent;OR=1.74),respectively.There were no neighborhood differences in the volume of any transportation or leisure PA undertaken.Adjustment for neighborhood selection had minimal impact on the statistical or practical importance of model estimates.Conclusion:Neighborhood design is associated with

Analysis of Metro Station Ridership Considering Spatial Heterogeneity

This study aims to explore the role of spatial heterogeneity in ridership analysis and examine the relationship between Built environment, station attributes and urban rapid transit ridership at the station level.Although spatial heterogeneity has been widely acknowledged in spatial data analysis, it has been rarely considered in travel behavior studies.Four models(three global models-ordinary least squares(OLS), spatial lag model(SLM), spatial error model(SEM) and one local model-geographically weighted regression(GWR) model) are estimated separately to explore the relationship between various independent variables and station ridership, and identify the influence of spatial heterogeneity.Using the data of Built environment and station characteristics, the results of diagnostic identify evidence the existence of spatial heterogeneity in station ridership for the metro network in Nanjing, China.Results of comparing the various goodness-of-fit indicators show that, the GWR model yields the best fit of the data, performance followed by the SEM, SLM and OLS model.The results also demonstrate that population, number of lines, number of feeder buses, number of exits, road density and proportion residential area have a significant impact on station ridership.Moreover, the study pays special attention to the spatial variation in the coefficients of the independent variables and their statistical significance.It underlines the importance of taking spatial heterogeneity into account in the station ridership analysis and the decision-making in urban planning.

It is very important to consider proper intelligent integration and locations of renewable energy sources into the Built environment for developing smart cities. Wind speed distribution study in the Built environment is very essential for analyzing the wind turbine performance located in the Built environment. In this work, the building layout like nozzle is proposed and the objective is to optimize the building layout for increasing electrical energy output of wind turbine, assumed to be installed in actual cities of Japan. The wind speed distribution across buildings is numerically simulated by using CFD-ACE+. Wind turbine power output is estimated using the power curve of a real commercial wind turbine and wind speed distribution is simulated using CFD software. The meteorological data of Fukushima city and Tsu city of Japan are utilized for evaluating the wind speed distribution profile across the building and for finding the electrical energy output from wind turbine. The proposed building models, which have the angle between two buildings like nozzle of 90°, 135° and 180°, can provide the wind acceleration at the back of buildings for the wind blowing from the main wind direction and the angle of 135°is optimum building layout. In the case of installing the proposed building model in Fukushima city and Tsu city, the wind energy output in winter season is higher while that in summer season is lower irrespective of the buildings’ angle. The interaction between the change in frequency distribution of wind speed and direction throughout the year and the location of open tip of building model decides the power generation characteristics of the proposed building model.
