Influence of building information modelling (BIM) on Engineering Contract Management in Nairobi, Kenya

building information modelling (BIM) is a technology and a process that has brought changes in the construction’s traditional procurement system. Kenya lacks contractual guidelines on implementation of BIM;this makes the adoption of BIM slow and difficult. Previous research has identified a gap in contractual relationships, roles and resulting risks. The objectives of this study were to investigate BIM adoption in Nairobi and to investigate the influence of BIM on Engineering Contract Management (ECM) in Nairobi Kenya. The survey research was a descriptive study with 175 responsive questionnaires. Respondents comprised of Civil Engineers, Construction Project Managers, Architects, Quantity Surveyors, Contractors and Facility Managers. Data was collected through self-administered questionnaire and in-depth interview. Descriptive analytics, correlation and Exploratory factor analysis methods were used to analyse quantitative data. Qualitative data was analysed thematically. It emerged that adoption level was at 56.6% and shallow understanding of BIM capabilities remains to be a barrier to its adoption and implementation. It also emerged that BIM improves ECM;when time, cost, quality, collaboration and return on investment improve, ECM becomes easier. Latent factors found in BIM and ECM relationship were Legal Implications, awareness and knowledge, efficiency, versatility, mandate and leadership, and competitiveness. Further, the study found out that BIM influence on ECM demands for establishment of standards, guidelines, policy, legal framework, and regulations, which can be achieved by amending the public procurement act which dictates the operation of all the other standard forms of contract. Further research should be conducted to measure whether the understanding of BIM had positively improved.

The Contributions of building information modelling to Sustainable Construction

Global concerns toward environmental issues have induced growing demand for new approaches in the construction because of its considerable impact on the environment and use of natural resources. Through using construction sustainability tools, methods and techniques, a greener design can be applied during various building phases. In this connection, it is argued that the analytical and integrated models applied by building information modelling (BIM) may also facilitate this process to be performed more efficiently. BIM and construction sustainability are quite different initiatives, but both have received much attention in recent years in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry. A rigorous analysis of the interactions between them implies that a synergy exists which, if properly it is understood that can be helpful to reduce the environmental impacts of the AEC industry. A BIM-based design model can contribute to sustainability through its three main dimensions which are environmental, economic and social. In this paper, by reviewing the existing literature on BIM and construction sustainability and using a matrix to analyze construction sustainability dimensions and BIM functionalities a number of interactions have been discussed. It can be concluded that despite there are many improvements in implementation of BIM in environmental and economic aspects of sustainability, its potential impact on social dimension has not been explicitly explored hence further studies need to be undertaken in this area.

Augmented reality-based BIM multi-user collaboration system

The rapid development of building information modelling(BIM) and its enabling technologies has attracted extensive attention in the field of architecture, engineering and construction(AEC). By combining BIM models with the real world, the potential of BIM can be further exploited with the help of augmented reality(AR) technology. However, a BIM model usually involves a huge amount of data. Considering the limited computing capability of current mobile devices, these applications therefore suffer from significant performance problems, especially model loading and rendering problems. To this end, an AR-based multi-user BIM collaboration system, which can realise the on-demand dynamical loading of the BIM model by using the block-wise loading strategy of model transformation, thus solving the problem of model loading delay, was proposed. In addition, dynamic rendering technology is adopted to solve the problem of rendering lag. Experimental results show that the realisation of virtual-reality fusion and interaction for the BIM model and remote multi-user collaboration can effectively improve work efficiency and intelligence in the engineering field.

An optimisation process to motivate effective adoption of BIM for refurbishment of complex buildings in New Zealand

Despite the multidisciplinary networks involved in refurbishment of complex building projects,the lack of BIM adoption signifies lack of real BIM benefits towards acceptance of BIM within Architecture,Engineering and Construction(AEC).To this end,this study empirically examines the potential real benefits between traditional network and BIM network for a real-time refurbishment case study project,through agentbased simulation modelling.A social network analysis theory is adapted to model the project interaction networks and a BIM prototype *** assessment of the main stakeholders for BIM perception is carried *** offered three prototype interaction networks for comparison of real BIM *** agent-based Bayesian network model is used to simulate the propagation of design error within the project *** result of the analysis show that BIM project diffuses error efficiently,while stakeholders recovers faster and nearly at the same time than traditional *** optimised network shows better performance to the traditional network,when there is early involvement of *** main contribution of this study is providing a novel approach to compare real benefits for traditional method to BIM method for refurbishment project and to provide avenue for project stakeholders to optimise their interaction through adoption of BIM.

Integration of data from heterogeneous data sources is one of several technical challenges during the tunnel construciton. BIM and relational database have maken their efforts for tunnel data organization, but they are not qualified for tunnel problem reasoning. This paper proposes a tunnel data organization method driven by Ontology, which is suitable for data reorganization as well as reasoning. In this mechanism, a tunnel domian ontology center is built by experts for accepting information from BIM and database. Combined with expert knowledge, the ontology is used for problem sloving and analysis. The ontology-driven system has been successfully applied in Shanghai HongMei South Tunnel Project, which improved the tunnel construction quality and helped avoid risks.

Dynamically loading IFC models on a web browser based on spatial semantic partitioning

Industry foundation classes(IFC)is an open and neutral data format specification for building information modeling(BIM)that plays a crucial role in facilitating *** increases in web-based BIM applications,there is an urgent need for fast loading large IFC models on a web ***,the task of fully loading large IFC models typically consumes a large amount of memory of a web browser or even crashes the browser,and this significantly limits further BIM *** order to address the issue,a method is proposed for dynamically loading IFC models based on spatial semantic partitioning(SSP).First,the spatial semantic structure of an input IFC model is partitioned via the extraction of story information and establishing a component space index table on the ***,based on user interaction,only the model data that a user is interested in is transmitted,loaded,and displayed on the *** presented method is implemented via Web Graphics Library,and this enables large IFC models to be fast loaded on the web browser without requiring any *** compared with conventional methods that load all IFC model data for display purposes,the proposed method significantly reduces memory consumption in a web browser,thereby allowing the loading of large IFC *** compared with the existing method of spatial partitioning for 3D data,the proposed SSP entirely uses semantic information in the IFC file itself,and thereby provides a better interactive experience for users.

我国建筑业长期以来因其资源浪费严重、安全事故频发、各参与方之间信息相互封闭、建设工程项目实施过程中缺乏有效的项目协同管理、生产效率低下、产品质量问题严重、先进技术的应用匮乏、自身技术进步滞后等等问题而倍受指责，而基于新兴技术（特别是现在信息化技术）的新的建设工程项目协同管理模式成为解决这些问题的重要技术方法和技术手段。建筑信息模型（buildinginformation modelling，BIM）作为一种能够通过创建并利用数字化模型实现对建设工程项目进行设计、建造及运营管理的现代信息技术平台，以其集成化、智能化、数字化以及模型信息关联性等特点，为参与建设工程项目的各方创建了一个便于交流的信息平台。近年来，BIM技术在国内建筑业日益得到重视和实际应用，并为研究和探索新的建设工程项目协同管理模式和相关制度与机制提供了有效的现代信息技术支持。该选取“基于BIM技术应用环境的工程项目管理协同机制”这一问题进行针对性研究，具有较为重要的现实意义和价值。该论文分析了目前BIM在国内外的研究现状、目前国际BIM发展的趋势和我国BIM研究和实践应用的重点和难点，提出了BIM环境下的建设工程项目管理过程中应当解决的主要协同管理问题;该论文作者通过对全球42份BIM标准/指南的分析研究，归纳提出了目前BIM应用实践中的31项应用点，并基于对已发表的高水平论文中相关案例的分析研究，归纳总结出13个已经较为广泛地应用实施的BIM应用点的具体应用情况;该论文作者针对目前建设工程项目管理领域基于BIM的项目协同管理研究的不足，初步设计了B IM环境下建设工程项目参与方宏观协同机制与微观协同机制;针对宏观协同机制，该论文分析了建设工程全寿命期中BIM的价值，提出了BIM工作流程，分别针对DBB建设工程（项目）采购模式、DB建设工程（项目）采购模式和IPD建设工程（项目）采购模式三种不同协同等级的建设工程（项目）采购模式设计了BIM环境下建设工程项目参与方的任务分配与信息协同路径;针对微观协同机制，该论文选取了6个BIM应用点，初步设计了建立在PDCA循环基础上的BIM应用实施路径，定义并初步设计了变更管理、方案模拟、进度模拟三个方面的协同流程;在此基础上，该论文运用BIM应用环境下的某真实建设工程项目案例背景，初步分析、验证了两种协同机制的可行性，并指出了存在的问题。

可持续发展与建筑信息模型(building information modelling,BIM)已经成为当今全球建筑业最热门的两个话题。可持续发展是当前交通基础设施项目的共同目标,而BIM是一种常用的工程应用技术。目前工业界已经达成共识,BIM可以大大提高建设工程行业的设计与项目管理能力,并建设更加可持续的建筑。但是,BIM和交通基础设施的可持续性能之间是否存在联系?本研究的目标是探究交通基础设施项目中应用BIM和可持续发展策略的相互作用,总结通过BIM提高交通基础设施项目可持续性的潜在用途并完成交通基础设施可持续建设BIM应用机制设计,提供应用BIM在交通基础设施实现可持续发展的建议。为了达到这个目标,本研究采取了文献研究、理论研究、访谈研究和案例分析的研究方法。本研究首先分析了交通基础设施行业在可持续发展方面的努力和BIM的理论和应用现状,对于交通基础设施、BIM和可持续之间的交叉领域进行了详细分析。为了在交通基础设施建设可持续发展与BIM应用方面进一步深入,本研究与相关业务的专业人员进行了深入访谈。其次,本研究阐述了在交通基础设施可持续建设中应用BIM的机制设计,及其产生的内外部管理作用和相关概念。在外部环境设计方面,研究了交通基础设施可持续建设中政府政策对于BIM的引导,设计了基于BIM和可持续的政府政策“推动-拉动”策略;在内部全生命周期管理方面,研究选取设计、施工和资产管理三方面BIM应用和可持续的价值,从可持续性评价(BIM和可持续交通基础设施评价体系的结合)、可持续施工(BIM和可持续与精益建造的协同)、可持续资产管理(可持续交通基础设施向智慧城市的延伸)三个角度,提出了交通基础设施可持续建设的BIM应用实施路线。然后,通过选取英国政府及其Crossrail项目工程实施案例论证了BIM对交通基础设施项目可持续发展的作用。最后从技术、组织和政策三个维度提出了发展策略。本研究探索了应用BIM影响交通基础设施项目可持续绩效的可能性和前景,旨在引导和激发进一步基于BIM的交通基础设施可持续建设研究。
