building Change Detection Improvement Using Topographic Correction Models

In the change detection application of remote sensing, commonly the variation in the brightness values of the pixels/objects in bi-temporal image is used as an indicator for detecting changes. However, there exist effects, other than a change in the objects that can cause variations in the brightness values. One of the effects is the illumination difference on steep surfaces mainly steeproofs of houses in very high resolution images, specifically in off-nadir images. This can introduce the problem of false change detection results. This problem becomes more serious in images with different view-angles. In this study, we propose a methodology to improve the building change detection accuracy using imagery taken under different illumination conditions and different view-angles. This is done by using the Patch-Wise Co-Registration (PWCR) method to overcome the misregistration problem caused by view-angle difference and applying Topographic Correction (TC) methods on pixel intensities to attenuate the effect of illumination angle variation on the building roofs. To select a proper TC method, four of the most widely used correction methods, namely C-correction, Minnaert, Enhanced Minnaert (for slope), and Cosine Correction are evaluated in this study. The results proved that the proposed methodology is capable to improve the change detection accuracy. Specifically, the correction using the C-correction and Enhanced Minnaert improved the change detection accuracy by around 35% in an area with a large number of steep-roof houses imaged under various solar angles.

Growing consumer interest in distributed building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) Systems and industry competition to reduce installation costs are stimulating the development of deploying these materials to the residential sector of the building industry. This emerging market continues to attract the attention of many stakeholders, yet cohesive opportunities to deploy in residential sectors, specifically detached single-family dwellings, is scattered. As a result, this study of literature and implementation strategies through simple examples looks to identify several characteristics related to BIPV. Characteristics that were studied in this initial pilot study were design considerations for system selection, applicability to residential construction, and system and material options and enhancements. A case-study home was analyzed demonstrating opportunity for implementation of BIPV on an existing residence. Strategies for maximizing the energy-generating capacity of the system to achieve net-zero energy performance, including all building surfaces and landscaping were also explored. This body of work provides a state-of-the-art review on common materials as well as the more customizable types.

building Failure Causes in Nigeria and Mitigating Roles by Engineering Regulation and Monitoring

This paper assessed some of the reported cases of building failures and their possible causes in Nigeria between 1977 and 2011. The reported major failure causes are structural failure (SF), Carelessness (CLSS), poor workmanship (PW), poor supervision (PS), poor materials (PM), and quackery (Q).These causes of failure were subjected to Chi-Square statistical test at 5% significant level and 4 degree of freedom to know the most common cause of failure in Nigeria. The analysis showed quackery as the principal culprit in the reported building failures in Nigeria with prevalence of 8 over poor supervision being the minimum in occurrence. Structural failure occurred 5 times, while poor materials, carelessness and poor workmanship occurred 4, 2 and 2 respectively. The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) with Engineering Regulation and Monitoring (ERM) as her arm as a technical professional group discouraging quackery and failures generally in Engineering Practice. The holistic approach needs effective training of Engineers starting with strong mathematical and scientific background at the secondary and tertiary education levels in conjunction with rigorous field and Industrial training exercises. There after effective scrutiny, professional registration process of competent engineers is followed.

building information modeling and its impact on users in the lifeworld: a mediation perspective

building information modeling (BIM) is expected to have a large impact on users in the lifeworlds in a construction supply chain. The impact ofBIM on users in their lifeworlds is explored using the concepts of Heidegger, Habermas, and Ihde from the perspective of technical mediation. This impact is explored by a case study. BIM mediates and shapes the relationship between users and their lifeworlds and can be characterized as either a hermeneutic or an alterity relationship. BIM conflicts with existing work practices in a ready-to-hand work environment. For users that cannot work with BIM, the work environment remains present-at-hand. The many heterogeneous BIM applications and systems used by the various parties involved result in interoperability problems that are a major barrier to enframing the supply chain by BIM. Although invitation and inhibition of certain actions by BIM may stimulate the rationalization of the lifeworlds, the lack of intrinsic motivation and mutual background knowledge inhibits an alignment of BIM and working practices.

building a Productive Domain-Specific Cloud for Big Data Processing and Analytics Service

Cloud Computing as a disruptive technology, provides a dynamic, elastic and promising computing climate to tackle the challenges of big data processing and analytics. Hadoop and MapReduce are the widely used open source frameworks in Cloud Computing for storing and processing big data in the scalable fashion. Spark is the latest parallel computing engine working together with Hadoop that exceeds MapReduce performance via its in-memory computing and high level programming features. In this paper, we present our design and implementation of a productive, domain-specific big data analytics cloud platform on top of Hadoop and Spark. To increase user’s productivity, we created a variety of data processing templates to simplify the programming efforts. We have conducted experiments for its productivity and performance with a few basic but representative data processing algorithms in the petroleum industry. Geophysicists can use the platform to productively design and implement scalable seismic data processing algorithms without handling the details of data management and the complexity of parallelism. The Cloud platform generates a complete data processing application based on user’s kernel program and simple configurations, allocates resources and executes it in parallel on top of Spark and Hadoop.

Sustainable building in China has gained attention both domestically and abroad. Despite the fast increase in sustainable assessment tools developed locally or adopted from overseas, there are still criticisms about the current situation of weak implementation and lack of comprehensive consideration. The lack of consideration of economic and social aspects or building performance on whole building life cycle all lead to departure from the true meaning of sustainable development. And lack of participation on the part of stakeholders makes it too theoretical to be carried out. This research aims to develop a model to address this problem. This research started with review of current sustainable assessment tools applied in China. As the assessment indicators have clear regional disparities, and almost no current tool considers all three pillars of environmental, economic and social in building life cycle. An industry survey was therefore designed for generation of indicators at different building stages, and personal interviews relevant to different occupation in building industry were conducted to complement the questionnaire survey. After that, the model building Sustainable Score (BSS) was developed based on the stakeholders’ participation. Finally, the model is verified by a case study.
