The gradual subduction-collision evolution model of Proto-South China Sea and its control on oil and gas

This study involved outcrop,drilling,seismic,gravity,and magnetic data to systematically document the geological records of the subduction process of Proto-South China Sea(PSCS)and establish its evolution *** results indicate that a series of arc-shaped ophiolite belts and calcalkaline magmatic rocks are developed in northern borneo,both of which have the characteristics of gradually changing younger from west to east,and are direct signs of subduction and collision of *** the same time,the subduction of PSCS led to the formation of three accretion zones from the south to the north in borneo,the Kuching belt,Sibu belt,and Miri *** sedimentary formation of northern borneo is characterized by a three-layer structure,with the oceanic basement at the bottom,overlying the deep-sea flysch deposits of the Rajang–Crocker group,and the molasse sedimentary sequence that is dominated by river-delta and shallow marine facies at the top,recording the whole subduction–collision–orogeny process of ***,seismic reflection and tomography also confirmed the subduction and collision of *** on the geological records of the subduction and collision of PSCS,combined with the comprehensive analysis of segmented expansion and key tectonic events in the South China Sea,we establish the“gradual”subduction-collision evolution model of *** the late Eocene to middle Miocene,the Zengmu,Nansha,and Liyue–Palawan blocks were separated by West Baram Line and Balabac Fault,which collided with the borneo block and Kagayan Ridge successively from the west to the east,forming several foreland basin systems,and PSCS subducted and closed from the west to the *** subduction and extinction of PSCS controlled the oil and gas distribution pattern of southern South China Sea(SSCS)mainly in three ***,the“gradual”closure process of PSCS led to the continuous development of many large deltas in ***,the deltas formed during the subduction–collision of PS

We provide confirmed photographic evidence for the previously overlooked occurrence of the polyphyletic Asian gecko genus Cnemaspis from Gunung Mulu National Park, the world-renowned UNESCO natural heritage site in northern Sarawak, East Malaysia. This new record from Sarawak province represents a remarkable range extension for Cnemaspis cf. kendallii by 550 km to the northeast and denotes the most northern occurrence of the genus in borneo. Our new finding makes it very likely that these gekkonid lizards also inhabit appropriate limestone karst habitats in adjacent Sabah, Brunei, and Kalimantan. Given the visible differences in the Mulu specimen compared to those from the remaining distribution range on borneo and the Malaysian Peninsula together with the fact that numerous Cnemaspis species are restricted to small areas, it seems plausible that another undescribed, rather cryptic and possibly locally endemic Bornean species is involved. Lastly, the new record contributes to the importance of the Mulu National Park as a major conservation area in East Malaysia of international concerns.

Background:The taxonomy of the Collared Owlet(Glaucidium brodiei)species complex is confused owing to great individual variation in plumage colouration seemingly unrelated to their *** generally recognised as a single species,vocal differences among the subspecies have been noted by field ***,there is no study assessing the vocal differences among these four ***:We obtained 76 sound recordings of the *** species complex comprising all four *** conducted bioacoustic examinations using principal component analysis and the Isler criterion to quantitatively test species boundaries within the *** *** addition,we compared plumage colouration among 13 specimens of the *** complex deposited at the Natural History Museum at Tring,UK and the Lee Kong China Natural History Museum,Singapore to ascertain the presence of plumage differences across ***:We found the Bornean and Sumatran populations vocally similar to each other,but distinctly different from the mainland and Taiwan *** vocal pattern seems to corroborate plumage distinctions in the colouration of neck collars:the Bornean and Sumatran taxa share a white neck collar,whereas the continental and Taiwan taxa share a rufous neck ***:We propose the taxonomic elevation of the Sumatran and Bornean populations to species level as Sunda Owlet ***,with one subspecies on Sumatra(***)and borneo(***)*** study corroborates the importance of bioacoustics in ascertaining species boundaries in non-passerines,and emphasises the significance of incorporating multiple species delimitation approaches when making taxonomic decisions.

Proto-South China Sea Plate Tectonics Using Subducted Slab Constraints from Tomography

The past size and location of the hypothesized proto-South China Sea vanished ocean basin has important plate-tectonic implications for Southeast Asia since the Mesozoic. Here we present new details on proto-South China Sea paleogeography using mapped and unfolded slabs from tomography. Mapped slabs included： the Eurasia-South China Sea slab subducting at the Manila trench; the northern Philippine Sea Plate slab subducting at the Ryukyu trench; and, a swath of detached, subhorizontal, slab-like tomographic anomalies directly under the South China Sea at 450 to 700 km depths that we show is subducted ‘northern proto-South China Sea’ lithosphere. Slab unfolding revealed that the South China Sea lay directly above the ‘northern Proto-South China Sea’ with both extending 400 to 500 km to the east of the present Manila trench prior to subduction. Our slab-based plate reconstruction indicated the proto-South China Sea was consumed by double-sided subduction, as follows：（1） The ‘northern proto-South China Sea’ subducted in the Oligo–Miocene under the Dangerous Grounds and southward expanding South China Sea by in-place ‘self subduction’ similar to the western Mediterranean basins;（2） limited southward subduction of the proto-South China Sea under borneo occurred pre-Oligocene, represented by the 800–900 km deep ‘southern proto-South China Sea’ slab.

Discovery of the remains of belemnites referred to the Hibolithes *** the Jurassic–Cretaceous Pedawan Formation in Sarawak,on the island of borneo(Malaysia)comprises four fragments of belemnite *** specimens are characterized by multiple fractures and vein *** fragments measuring about 130 mm are relatively intact,with only part of the alveolar region missing;a third piece represents the middle part of a rostrum,and the fourth specimen is too fragmentary to be assigned to any specific part of the *** on specimen characteristics,a Tithonian–Hauterivian age is *** sedimentary succession that yielded the belemnite material comprises thick shale that reflects the Te division of Bouma *** occurrence of a Hibolithes taxon in the uppermost Jurassic to lowermost Cretaceous Pedawan Formation sediments in borneo reflects a near to global palaeobiogeographic distribution of this genus.

Although the role of primates in seed dispersal is generally well recognized,this is not the case for colobines,which are widely distributed in Asian and African tropical *** consume leaves,seeds and fruits,usually unripe.A group of proboscis monkeys(Colobinae,Nasalis larvatus)consisting of 1 alpha-male,6 adult females and several immatures,was observed from May 2005 to May 2006.A total of 400 fecal samples from focal group members covering 13 months were examined,with over 3500 h of focal observation data on the group members in a forest along the Menanggul River,Sabah,*** small seeds were only found in 23 of 71 samples in Nov 2005,15 of 38 in Dec 2005 and 5 of 21 in Mar *** of Ficus(all<1.5 mm in length)were found in all 3 months and seeds from Antidesma thwaitesianum(all<3 mm)and Nauclea subdita(all<2 mm)only in Nov and Dec,which was consistent with members of the study group consuming fruits of these species mostly at these *** our knowledge,these are the fi rst records of seeds in the fecal samples of *** if colobines pass relatively few seeds intact,their high abundance and biomass could make them quantitatively significant in seed *** potential role of colobines as seed dispersers should be considered by colobine researchers.

Fanged frogs, now called Limnonectes kuhlii, from borneo are remotely related to true Javanese L. kuhliL For future taxonomy of Bornean fanged frogs, we fix the nomenclatural status of two existing names, Rana conspicillata Giunther, 1872 and Rana paradoxa Mocquard, 1890. Morphological comparison of the type-series revealed heterospecific relationships of the two species. For R. conspicillata, we designate BMNH 1947.***.29.20 as the lectotype, and for R. para doxa, we also designate MNHN 1889.222 as the lectotype and propose a replacement name Limnonectes mocquardi, in order to stabilize their nomenclature.
