AIM To evaluate sex differences and the effects of oestrogen administration in rat gastric mucosal *** Sex differences in gastric mucus thickness and accumulation rate, absolute gastric mucosal blood flow using microspheres, the integrity of the gastric mucosal epithelium in response to a chemical irritant and the effects of oestrogen administration on relative gastric mucosal blood flow in an acute setting was assessed in an in vivo rat experimental model. Subsequently, sex differences in the distribution of oestrogen receptors and calcitonin gene related peptide in the gastric mucosa of animals exposed to oestrogen in the above experiments was evaluated using *** The absolute blood flow in the GI-tract was generally higher in males, but only significantly different in the corpus part of the stomach (1.12 ± 0.12 m L/min·g in males and 0.51 ± 0.03 m L/min·g in females) (P = 0.002). After removal of the loosely adherent mucus layer the thickness of the firmly adherent mucus layer in males and females was 79 ± 1 μm and 80 ± 3 μm respectively. After 60 min the mucus thickness increased to 113 ± 3 μm in males and 121 ± 3 μm in females with no statistically significant difference seen between the sexes. Following oestrogen administration(0.1 followed by 1 μg/kg·min), mean blood flow in the gastric mucosa decreased by 31% [68 ± 13 perfusion units (PFU)] in males which was significantly different compared to baseline(P = 0.02). In females however, mean blood flow remained largely unchanged with a 4% (5 ± 33 PFU) reduction. The permeability of the gastric mucosa increased to a higher level in females than in males (P = 0.01) after taurocholate challenge. However, the calculated mean clearance increase did not significantly differ between the sexes [0.1 ± 0.04 to 1.1 ± 0.1 m L/min·100 g in males and 0.4 ± 0.3 to 2.1 ± 0.3 m L/min·100 g in females(P = 0.065)]. In this paper, a new theoretical model of nonlinear wave propagations in arteries with surrounding tissues was put forward. The equations of motion for the blood vessels and their peripheral tissues as a system have been derived. These equations were expressed in terms of the stresses of the vessel wall and fluid, and the geometry of the blood vessel. They can be used to solve numerically the problems for the propagations of nonlinear pulse waves in arteries together with the momentum and continuity equations of incompressible-viscous flow, as well as the constitutive equations of fluid and vessel wall. The numerical solutions can involve pressure, velocities and flowrate of the blood flow, as well as displacements, velocities and stresses of the vessel wall. These physical variables of propagations of pulse waves in arteries are all of significance physiologically and clinically.

BACKGROUND In recent years, with the popularity of laryngeal mask airway(LMA) for the management of clinical anesthesia, the influence of the LMA on the position and blood flow of the internal jugular vein(IJV) has attracted an increasing amount of *** To investigate the effect of placement of different types of LMA(Supreme LMA,Guardian LMA, I-gel LMA) on the position and blood flow of the right *** This was a prospective randomized controlled trial. A total of 102 patients aged 18-75 years who were scheduled to undergo laparoscopic abdominal surgery with general anesthesia were randomly assigned to three groups: Supreme LMA(group 1), Guardian LMA(group 2), and I-gel LMA(group 3) groups. FINITE ELEMENT GALERKIN APPROACH FOR A COMPUTATIONAL STUDY OF ARTERIAL flow

A finite element solution for the Navier_Stokes equations for steady flow through a double branched two dimensional section of three dimensional model of canine aorta is obtained. The numerical technique involves transformation of the physical coordinates to a curvilinear boundary fitted coordinate system. The shear stress at the wall is calculated for Reynolds number of 1000 with branch to main aortic flow rate ratio as a parameter. The results are compared with earlier works involving experimental data and it is observed that the results are very close to their solutions. This work in fact is an improvement of the work of Sharma and Kapoor (1995) in the sense that computations scheme is economic and Reynolds number is large.

Factors Influencing the Disturbed flow Patterns Downstream of Curved Atherosclerotic Arteries

Pulsatile blood flows in curved atherosclerotic arteries are studied by computer simulations. Computations are carried out with various values of physiological parameters to examine the effects of flow parameters on the disturbed flow patterns downstream of a curved artery with a stenosis at the inner wall. The numerical results indicate a strong dependence of flow pattern on the blood viscosity and inlet flow rate, while the influence of the inlet flow profile to the flow pattern in downstream is negligible.

blood supply is believed to be an important aspect in the development of pathological scars. However, there are controversies about vascular distribution, vascular structure and blood flow in pathological scars. Additionally, hypoxic microenvironment plays an important role in the vascularization of pathological scar tissues, and hypoxic conditions can be reflected by metabolic indexes and some cytokines. Furthermore, the correlation between blood supply and tissue hypoxia is controversial. The aim of this article is to review the literature on the characteristics of blood supply and tissue hypoxia in pathological scars, from which we can see pathological scars have unique characteristics of blood supply that are closely associated with tissue hypoxia. Moreover, development in the treatment of pathological scars is herein reviewed.

BACKGROUND： The early correct diagnosis of acute cerebral infarction （ACI） is very important for choosing therapeutic regimen. The classification of Oxfordshire community stroke project （OCSP） provides guide for easy and rapid diagnosis and choosing therapeutic regimen in clinical practice. But current operation is not satisfied. Only depending on clinical symptoms and body signs do objective evidences lack. Transcranial Doppler ultrasound （TCD） examination may provide hemodynamical evidences for the correct classification of OCSP to some extent. OBJECTIVE： To compare the results of OCSP classification and TCD examination for treating ACI in patients and analyze the relationship between them as well as the effect of TCD on the correct classification of OCSP. DESIGN ： Controlled observation.SETTING： Department of Internal Medicine, Shenzhen Hospital of Prevention and Treatment for Occupationa Disease. PARTICIPANTS： Thirty-eight inpatients with ACI including 21 males and 17 females, aged 50 to 81 years, who received treatment in the Department of Internal Medicine, Shenzhen Hospital of Prevention and Treatment for Occupational Disease within 24 hours after onset from October 2002 to October 2005 were involved. The involved inpatients all confirmed to the diagnostic criteria of ACI formulated in the 4^th National Cerebrovascular Diseases Conference. All the cases received skull computer tomography （CT） or magnetic resonance imaging （MRI） examinations at 24 hours after onset. Those patients who had no obvious infarct focus in skull CT examination within 24 hours after onset were performed re-examination to verify ACI within 72 hours after onset. Informed consents of examination method were obtained from all the patients.
