In order to evaluate the accuracy of bispectral estimation method, signals of cosine function were adopted. Because the cosine signals’ three order moment spectrum and three order cumulant spectrum are zero, Non zero part of the bispectrum estimated by no matter which method is the estimation error. Through the comparison of three kinds of estimation methods: the direct method, indirect method and AR parameter method, errors of various estimation methods were obtained, then changing the values of different parameters in all methods, and observing the bispectral error values changes with the parameters, so as to provide a basis for the various bispectrum estimation method and the selection.

Objective To investigate the effect of propofol on brain regions at different sedation levels and the association between changes in brain region activity and loss of consciousness using blood oxygen level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging(BOLD-f MRI) and bispectral index(BIS) *** Forty-eight participants were enrolled at Peking Union Medical College Hospital from October 2011 to March 2012 and randomly assigned to a mild or a deep sedation group using computergenerated random *** tests were performed a week prior to scanning to determine target effect site concentrations based on BIS and concomitant Observer's Assessment of Alertness/Sedation scores while under *** one week of the preliminary tests where propofol dose-response was established,BOLD-f MRI was conducted to examine brain activation with the subject awake,and with propofol infusion at the sedation *** Mild propofol sedation inhibited left inferior parietal lobe *** sedation inhibited activation of the left insula,left superior temporal gyrus,and right middle temporal *** with mild sedation,deep propofol sedation inhibited activation of the left thalamus,precentral gyrus,anterior cingulate,and right basal *** Mild and deep propofol sedation are associated with inhibition of different brain regions,possibly explaining differences in the respective loss of consciousness processes.

This paper compares the correlation dimension (D2) and Higuchi fractal dimension (HFD) approaches in estimating BIS index based on of electroencephalogram (EEG). The single-channel EEG data was captured in both ICU and operating room and different anesthetic drugs, including propofol and isoflurane were used. For better analysis, application of adaptive segmentation on EEG signal for estimating BIS index is evaluated and compared to fixed segmentation. Prediction probability (PK) is used as a measure of correlation between the predictors and BIS index to evaluate the proposed methods. The results show the ability of these algorithms (specifically HFD algorithm) in predicting BIS index. Also, evolving fixed and adaptive windowing methods for segmentation of EEG reveals no meaningful difference in estimating BIS index.

A new approach to estimating level of uncon-sciousness based on Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is proposed. The Electroen-cephalogram (EEG) data was captured in both Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and operating room, using different anesthetic drugs. Assuming the central nervous system as a 20-tuple source, window length of 20 seconds is applied to EEG. The mentioned window is considered as 20 nonoverlapping mixed-signals (epoch). PCA algorithm is applied to these epochs, and larg-est remaining eigenvalue (LRE) and smallest remaining eigenvalue (SRE) were extracted. Correlation between extracted parameters (LRE and SRE) and depth of anesthesia (DOA) was measured using Prediction probability (PK). The results show the superiority of SRE than LRE in predicting DOA in the case of ICU and isoflurane, and the slight superiority of LRE than SRE in propofol induction. Finally, a mixture model containing both LRE and SRE could predict DOA as well as Relative Beta Ratio (RBR), which expresses the high capability of the proposed PCA based method in estimating DOA.

Carotid endarterectomy is an established treatment in the prevention of transient ischemic attack or stroke. Objective:To observe the effects of different anesthesia depths on the level of plasma cortisol during operation and the score of postoperative MMSE in elderly patients underwent radical ***: A total of eighty seven elderly patients undergoing radical gastrectomy were enrolled in this study. Continuous infusion of propofol and remifentanil for anesthesia and maintenance of propofol were divided into two groups: BIS-I (BIS: 45-55) and BIS-II (BIS: 55-65) by adusting the doses of propofol. The data were recorded as following, thewhole dosage of propofol, the time of extubation and the score of VAS. The level of plasma cortisol was finished at the time of incision and tracheal intubation. MMSE scores were recorded on the day before operation and follow-up at 3 and 7 d postoperatively. Record the patient's operation to discharge time, postoperative ***: The concentration of cortisol in BIS-I group was higher than that in BIS-II group. There was no significant difference in extubation time, extubation VAS score and MMSE score after ***:There were no significant differences in the BIS values between 45 and 65 for the elderly patients undergoing upper abdominal surgery, and there were no significant differences in the patients' postoperative stress, wake, extubation, early postoperative pain scores and postoperative cognitive function. BIS values in 45-55 compared to 55-65 patients with low plasma cortisol levels may be associated with better control of stress levels, to maintain the BIS value between 45-55 anesthesia depths is more reasonable.
