bite is a potentially attractive candidate for thermoelectric applications because it is the structural analogue of the state-of-the-art thermoelectric material,bismuth telluride(Bi_(2)Te_(3)). However, bite has attracted little attention due to its small band gap and high electron concentration. In this study, remarkable increase in thermoelectric performance in the n-type Bi_(1-x)Sb_(x)Te compounds through tuning the carrier concentration with chemical doping is shown. The Seebeck coefficient of Bi_(1-x)Sb_(x)Te increases remarkably while the electronic thermal conductivity decreases gradually as Sb content is increased, leading to enhanced thermoelectric figure of merit(ZT). Moreover, the simultaneous optimization of the electrical and thermal transport properties leads the peak temperature of the figure of merit to shift toward lower temperature with Sb content increasing in Bi_(1-x)Sb_(x)Te, thus making Bi_(1-x)Sb_(x)Te a potential alternative to bismuth telluride for near-room-temperature thermoelectric applications. In addition, the presence of multiple low-frequency optical phonons and their coupling with the long-wavelength heat carrying acoustic phonons in all the Bi_(1-x)Sb_(x)Te investigated are revealed based on the combined Debye-Einstein model. The present results provide the underlying mechanism connecting thermoelectric performance and lattice dynamics in Bi_(1-x)Sb_(x)Te compounds.

P asteurella multocida (P. multocida), a Gram-negative pathogen, is mainly associated with animal infections. Human P. multocida infections are occasionally encountered and most human cases are due to the animal exposure or contact, especially due to cat bites. 1 In China, P. multocida infections are rarely described. CASE REPORT A 50-year old woman was sent to the Emergency Department of West China Hospital on June 25, 2004, due to the complain of an onset of pain, erythema, bleeding, and swelling at a wound on the right leg, caused by a pet cat bite 11 hours ago. She was diagnosed as having a wound infection and received intravenous penicillin G 4 million U/day. One day later, though the bleeding was ceased, she felt worse. Then, she was admitted to the Department of Infectious Diseases. She has no fever nor other systemic symptoms when she was admitted. On examination, three close, small and deep holes were found on the right leg near the ankle. Around the holes, the skin and soft tissue were red swelling and tenderness with a high skin temperature. Little pus was presented when the wound was crushed. Regional lymphadenopathy in right groin was found. No dyskinesia and tenderness of the ankle joint was found. Examination of her respiratory, cardiovascular, and gastrointestinal systems was unremarkable. Initial blood routine examination for her revealed: haemoglobin 12.5 g/dl; white blood cell count 7×10 9/L (neutrophils 4.48, lymphocytes 2.45); platelet, 184×10 9/L. But the white cell count increased to 11.2×10 9/L (neutrophils 8.52, lymphocytes 2.58) on the next day. Routine biochemical examination for her revealed normality.

Objective:To perform a review evaluating management of and complications stemming from dog bite trauma sustained to the head and neck over the past *** Sources:PubMed and Cochrane ***:The authors searched the PubMed and Cochrane Library databases for relevant published literature.A total of 12 peer-reviewed canine-exclusive series inclusive of 1384 patient cases describing facial dog bite trauma met inclusion *** including fractures,lacerations,contusions,and other soft-tissue injuries were *** related to clinical course and management,operating room requirements,and antibiotic usage were compiled and *** trauma and surgical management complications were also ***:75.5%of patients sustaining dog bites required surgical *** these patients,7.8%suffered from postsurgical complications,including hypertrophic scarring(4.3%),postoperative infection(0.8%),or nerve deficits and persistent paresthesias(0.8%).Prophylactic antibiotics were administered to 44.3%of patients treated for facial dog bites and the overall infection rate was 5.6%.Concomitant fracture was present in 1.0%of ***:Primary closure,often in the OR may be necessary,with few cases requiring grafts or *** should be aware that the most common complication is hypertrophic *** research is needed to elucidate the role of prophylactic antibiotics.

Comparative Study of Herbal Extracted Gel and 1% Hydrocortisone Gel in the Treatment of Mosquito bite Reaction

Background: Mosquito bite reaction is a common skin disease. Topical steroids and oral antihistamines are the conventional treatment. However, the side effects from prolonged use of topical steroids are the limitation of the treatment. Recently, herbal extracts are emerging interest for an alternative anti-inflammatory dermatoses therapy. Objective: To assess the effectiveness of herbal extracted gel containing, Perilla frutescens, Portulaca oleracea, Ipomoea pescaprae, Aloe vera, Centella asiatica and Broussonetia papyrifera in comparing with 1% hydrocortisone (HC) gel. Material and Methods: An experimental study was conducted on 50 mosquito bite hypersensitive volunteers (15 - 19 years old) with double-blinded split randomized control method. After the volunteers were exposed for one bite on their arms by a non-infectious mosquito, Aedes albopictus, the drugs were applied twice daily. The diameter of lesion, pruritus analog score, erythema and melanin index were measured at 2, 6, 24 hours and 2, 3, 4 weeks. The volunteers “self-satisfaction” and side effects were recorded. Results: The mean age was 17.42 ± 1.14 years old. The diameter of lesion, pruritus analog score, erythema and melanin index were decreased on both sides at each visit with significant difference (p 0.05). The post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation rate of 1% HC and herbal gel was 64% and 54% respectively without significant difference (p = 0.267). Conclusion: The herbal gel was as effective as 1% HC for the treatment of acute and late reaction of mosquito bite reaction in adolescent. It may be used as the alternative treatment for mosquito bite reaction.

Open Fractures of Limbs by the bite of Domestic Donkeys: An Unusual Aetiology

Introduction: The aim of this study is to describe the epidemiological, lesional, therapeutic and evolutionary profile of open fractures of limbs by bites of domestic donkeys. Patients and Methods: This is a prospective descriptive study over 28 months made in the Orthopedics-Traumatology department of the Tambacounda Regional Hospital in Senegal, concerning patients bitten by donkeys, resulting in an open fracture of the thoracic and pelvic limbs. Results: Twelve male patients were included. The average age was 10.50 years ± 2.60. The most common circumstance was the bite when two donkeys were separated. The thoracic limbs were the most affected by the occurrence of the arm. Cauchoix-Duparc type II and AO A2 and B2 were predominant. The essential trimming/osteosynthesis was carried out within 24 hours of the bite. Serovaccination was systematic, but on the other hand, a single dose of anti-rabies serum was administered. Pinning was the most commonly used bone synthesis. Complications were mainly infectious, followed by a case of radial nerve palsy and non-union on pins. Conclusion: The typical profile of an open donkey bite fracture is a male child/adolescent who is bitten during the separation of two fighting donkeys. The lesions are most often found in the thoracic limbs with a predominance of Cauchoix-Duparc type II and type A2 and B2 fractures of the AO, whose treatment consisted of trimming and pinning. The infectious complications of the soft tissues marked the evolution.

Successful Treatment of a Case of First bite Syndrome without Any Cause

Background: For the first bite syndrome (FBS), various causes were suggested such as parapharyngeal space surgery, resection of styloid process, carotid endarterectomy, parotid gland tumor, submandibular gland tumor, and upper cervical surgery. Actually, the real cause of FBS is still not clear. Also, suggested methods of treatment for the FBS are botulinum toxin injection, laser tympanic plexus ablation, pharmacologic approach, and no treatment. The results of those treatments were not satisfactory. Aim: The authors tried to find out the adequate method of treatment for the FBS and also tried to figure out pathologic cause of the FBS through observation of the patient response to the treatment. Case Presentation: A 38-year-old male was presented at head and neck surgery clinic with a sharp pain on the left parotid area especially at the first bite of eating food for two days. There was no cause. The patient was given trigger point injections on his left sternocleidomastoid, masseter, and temporal muscles with left mandibular nerve block five times 3 - 4 days apart. Also small amount of oral anticonvulsants were added for four weeks. Before finishing taking oral medication, the pain was gone completely. Conclusion: The authors experienced a case of FBS with no detectable cause, and treated successfully with the methods of trigger point injection, mandibular nerve block, and oral antiepileptic medication.

Nonsurgical orthodontic treatment for an adult with skeletal open bite, class III malocclusion and posterior crossbite: A case report

Class III malocclusion associated with skeletal anterior open bite pattern in adults can be a challenging orthodontic problem, especially for the nonsurgical treatment. Conventionally, several treatment alternatives are available such as tooth extraction, molar intrusion, and absolute anchorage system or orthognathic surgical correction. Although correction with surgery may be the most effective and stable way, many patients refused surgical treatment plan because of the costs and traumas it may bring. We reported a nonsurgical orthopedic treatment of 22-year-old male with severe skeletal anterior open bite, dental Class III malocclusion, posterior crossbite and a high mandibular plane angle. The patient refused surgery and extraction. So we formulated a treatment plan consisting of using rapid palatal expansion appliance to expand the maxilla, standard edgewise brackets to align the teeth, Class III elastics to correct the canines, premolars, and molars relationship, reverse curve of the nickel-titanium wire combined with anterior vertical elastics to intrude molars and correct open bite. In this case, without suffering of surgery, the posterior crossbite was ideally corrected, and ideal overjet and overbite relationships and functional occlusion were all achieved. The patient obtained satisfactory occlusal as well as functional and stable results.

Can Fresh Frozen Plasma Prevent Acute Kidney Injury after Hump-Nosed Viper bite?

Hump-nosed viper bite is the commonest venomous snakebite in Sri Lanka. Acute kidney injury (AKI) in association with coagulopathy is an important cause of mortality. Immunomodulating effects of fresh frozen plasma (FFP) could block the nephrotoxic effects of venom;and by replenishing depleted clotting factors resulting from venom induced consumption coagulopathy could offer an additional benefit in offsetting renal injury triggered by haematological disturbances. In a non-randomised observational study carried out from 2005 to 2008 in adults at the National hospital of Sri Lanka, the mean time for resolution of coagulopathy among 42 patients treated with FFP at the inception of coagulopathy was 4.7 hours compared to 18 patients treated with isotonic Saline among whom the mean time for normalisation of coagulopathy was 6.2 hours. None of these 60 patients developed acute renal failure. A separate cohort of 32 patients with coagulopathy after hump-nosed viper bite who had not received FFP during this study period developed acute renal failure and required haemodialysis. In the absence of safe and effective antivenom for hump-nosed viper in Sri Lanka, FFP may be a therapeutic option. FFP if given early to selected patients at inception of coagulopathy may prevent AKI and serve to save lives after hump-nosed viper bites.
