Latitudinal gradients in body size and sexual size dimorphism in fleas:males drive bergmann’s pattern

We tested for the effects of latitude and geographic range size(GRs)on body size,leg length,and sexual size dimorphism(ssD)across 103 species ofﬂeas,taking into account phylogenetic between-species *** the data on body size were combined for males and females,the positive correlation between body size and latitude,but not GRs,was *** the analysis was restricted to one sex only,the effect of latitude appeared to be non-signiﬁcant for females,whereas male body size increased with an increase in ***ﬁc body size variation was not associated with either the latitude or the latitudinal span of the geographic range,independently of which data subset was *** evidence of association between size-independent tibia length and latitude was found for either females,males,or both sexes *** degree of ssD decreased with a decrease in latitude but was not affected by *** conclude that macroecological patterns might be manifested differently in males and *** should be kept in mind while searching for these patterns.

Butterflies are widely studied due to their key ecosystem *** this reason,they are used in ecosystem assessment,formulating conservation plans and in raising the environmental *** of different factors affecting diversity of butterflies is important for their effective *** this study,we investigated abiotic and biotic factors affecting species richness and community composition of butterflies along an elevational gradient in Manang region,central *** also tested if butterfly species follow the bergmann’s rule.A total of 57 butterfly species belonging to 39 genera and 8 families were recorded in the study *** of a total of 127 plant species identified in the study region,only 67 plant species were visited by butterflies as nectar *** richness of butterflies increased with increasing *** richness was significantly higher in places with shrubs compared to other places and also in autumn than in *** richness of butterflies also depended on composition of plant species occurring at the *** species composition varied among sampling *** was also determined by habitat type,elevation,sampling time,plant species and interactions of elevation×*** relationship between butterfly size and elevation was in the opposite direction than expected according to the bergmann’s *** conclusion,protection of butterfly diversity can only be achieved by protecting different habitats across the diverse physiography of the region and different plant species,in particular herbs and *** results do not support the bergmann’s rule for butterflies along an elevational gradient in our region.

Influence of geography and climate on patterns of cell size and body size in the lizard Anolis carolinensis

Geographic patterns in body size are often associated with latitude,elevation,or environmental and climatic *** study investigated patterns of body size and cell size of the green anole lizard,Anolis carolinensis,and potential associations with geography or climatic *** were sampled from 19 populations across the native range,and body size,red blood cell size and size and number of muscle cells were *** data from local weather stations and latitude and longitude were entered into model selection with Akaike’s information criterion to explain patterns in cell and body *** variables did not drive any major patterns in cell size or body size;rather,latitude and longitude were the best predictors of cell and body *** general,smaller body and cell sizes in Florida anoles drove geographic patterns in *** size in Florida may be attributable to�q�the�geological history of the peninsular state or�the�unique ecological factors in this area,including a recently introduced *** contrast to previous studies,we found that *** does not follow bergmann’s rule when the influence of Florida is ***,the opposite pattern of larger lizards in southern populations is evident in the absence of Florida populations,and mirrors the general pattern in *** cell size was negatively related to latitude and red blood cell size showed no latitudinal trend outside of *** patterns in the sizes of the 2 cell types confirm the importance of examining multiple cell types when studying geographic variation in cell size.
