Age-associated declines in brain function and cognition are tightly regulated plastic processes and can be mitigated by intensive training during older adulthood. In this study, we show that aging rats that experienced a period of auditory training during early life performed better on a sound discrimination task compared with age-matched untrained controls. Early training also enhanced neuronal temporal processing in the primary auditory cortex（A1） of aged rats. Increases in parvalbumin-and somatostatinlabeled inhibitory neurons were recorded in the A1 and hippocampus in parallel. These results indicate that early training can permanently affect the auditory system, ameliorating age-related declines in neural function and perception. These results also suggest that attention-demanding behavioral training during early life is a better strategy for delaying age-related deficits, rather than training later in life when these declines have already occurred.
