Numerical investigation of shallow wake behind a patch of rigid emergent vegetation

The shallow water flow through and around a patch of rigid emergent vegetation was investigated numerically. The mean flow field and turbulent structures were studied, especially their dependence on the solid volume fraction (SVF) of the patch and the bed friction. Two streamwise velocity scales, U1s at the starting point of the steady wake and U1e at the downstream end of the steady wake, and the length of the steady wake L1 were used to describe the steady wake behind the patch. U1s was found to be related to SVF only. However, U1e and L1 were influenced by both the SVF and the wake stability parameter S. For a sparse patch, U1e was equal to U1s, and L1 decreased with the increase of S. For a mid-dense patch, U1e was always smaller than U1s, and it increased with S and gradually approached U1s. The increase of U1e reduced the lateral velocity difference between the flows inside and outside the wake, which resulted in the increase of L1. For a highly dense patch, U1e and L1 did not increase unless S was larger than a critical value. A new parameter, r, was proposed to represent the development rate of the steady wake. The numerical results showed that r increased monotonously with S for mid-dense patches.

Field observational previously indicated a mouth bar of a fan delta could exhibit a fining-or coarseningupward trend,which bring a new challenge to the identification of mouth bar in subsurface studies due to the lack of morphological *** studies have indicated that effluent behavior in rivermouth system can affect the vertical grain-size trend of mouth bar,but the drivers and magnitude of this phenomenon are not *** conducted flume experiments to investigate the mechanism and controlling factors of vertical grain-size trend of mouth *** with a steeper slope of the substrate layer,greater discharge,higher sediment/water ratio,and coarser sediment induced a finingupward trend of mouth bar,because the effluent was dominated by strong *** bar in the experiment with a gentler slope of the substrate layer,smaller discharge,lower sediment/water ratio,and finer sediment exhibited a coarsening-upward trend dominated by the friction-dominated *** relationship between the vertical grain-size trend of mouth bar and the gradients of foreset bedding in small-scale flume models and the cut-off of 15°-18°are applicable in natural *** depositional setting to infer depositional process in river-mouth system and analyzing the plane geometry of sandbodies are two steps in the interpretation of ancient fan deltaic rock record.

Nonlinear Analysis of Nearshore Wave Height Variation Due to Shoaling

Wave formulae derived from the dispersion relation for cnoidal waves are used to find an analytical solution to the problem of nearshore wave height variation on a simple topography, i. e., with an incrementally constant slope. The solution accounts for shoaling, frictional dissipation and will be sufficiently accurate for practical purposes considering the simplified assumptions which are necessary for the treatment of this problem by any method.
