bear Bile Powder Inhibits Growth of Hepatocellular Carcinoma via Suppressing STAT3 Signaling Pathway in Mice

Objective: To evaluate the inhibitory effect of bear bile powder(BBP) on hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) growth in vivo and investigate the underlying mechanisms. Methods: A HCC xenograft mouse model was developed by producing with huh7 cells. After 5 days following xenograft implantation, ten HCC xenograft mice were given intra-gastric administration with 10 mg/(kg·d) dose of BBP or saline for 3 weeks. Tumor growth in HCC xenograft mice was evaluated by measuring the tumor weight and volume. Cell apoptosis, proliferation or tumor angiogenesis were examined via immunohistochemical(IHC) staining for transferase-mediated deoxyuridine triphosphate-biotin nick end labeling(TUNEL), proliferating cell nuclear antigen(PCNA) or cluster of differentiation 31(CD31), respectively. Phosphorylation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3(STAT3) were determined by Western blot. The m RNA and protein expressions of Bcl-2, Bax, Cyclin D1 and Cyclin-dependent kinase 4(CDK4) in HCC tumor tissues were respectively determined by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR) and Western blot. The protein expression of vascular endothelial growth factor A(VEGF-A) in tumor tissues was examined by IHC staining. Results: BBP treatment led to a significant decrease on tumor volume and tumor weight in HCC mice(P<0.05) and had no effect on the change of body weight. In addition, BBP profoundly promoted cell apoptosis, inhibited cell proliferation and intratumoral microvessel density in HCC tumor tissues(P<0.05). Moreover, BBP treatment remarkably suppressed the STAT3 phosphorylation and modulated the expression of critical target genes including Bcl-2, Bax, Cyclin D1, CDK4 and VEGF-A in HCC mice. Conclusion: BBP exerts its anti-cancer activities via suppressing STAT3 signaling pathway and affecting multiple intracellular targets.

Matrilinear hierarchy in the American black bear (Ursus americanus)

The American black bear(Ursus americanus)was long thought to be solitary and its social organization has not been well ***,we present new data on black bear social *** objectives of the study were to make detailed observations of the behavior of wild black bears to determine their social interactions and *** tested whether black bears interacted socially beyond mating and competing for resources,if black bears tracked relationships and interacted regularly even when resources were not limited,and whether the social structure of a population of black bears was based on a matrilinear *** collected data by direct observation of bears from 1993 to *** of 1210 social interactions at a provisioning site indicated that females compete and form matrilinear *** bears established a hierarchy for food,control of space,and control of younger *** interaction scent marking took place,which suggested that dominant females were conditioning subordinates to their scent *** behavior occurred between related and unrelated bears and helped to establish the social structure of the bear *** on our data,human–bear conflicts can be reduced by behavioral modifications by humans when they encounter *** of bear behavior and the matrilinear hierarchy provide a basis for non-lethal management of bears that find themselves in a bear–human conflict situation.

The Status and Management of bear Resources in China

There are three species of bears in China, brown bear (Ursus arctos), black bear (Selenarctos thibetanus)and sun bear (Helarctos malayanus). From 1991 to 1994, the investigation of bears organized by CWCA (China wildlifeConservation Association) was conducted in 22 provinces of China The rcsults showed that the distribution area of bearshad been changed from the continuous distribution to fragmentary. The distribution areas of threc species were 1imited to thearea of 2591427 km2, and the total number of population was reduced to 61686. The distribution area of black bear was625086 km2, the population size was 46528, average density was 0. 0714/km2 The distribution area of brown bear was1956691 km2, the population size was 14783, average density was 0. 0076/km2 The distribution area of sun bear was 9650km2; the population size was trom 350 to 400. There are 396 bear farms in China and the 6688 bears are being reared onthese bear farms 94.4% of them is black bears (3612), 4. 5% of them is brown bears (300); 1. 1 % of them is sun bears (10).The management of bears in China was discussed in this paper.

bear, a Molecular Docking Refinement and Rescoring Method

bear (Binding Estimation After Refinement) is a computational method for structure-based virtual screening. It was set up as a post-docking processing tool for the refinement of ligand binding modes predicted by molecular docking programs and the accurate evaluation of free energies of binding. bear has been validated in a number of computational drug discovery applications. It performed well in discriminating active ligands with respect to molecular decoys of biological targets belonging to different protein families as well as in discovering biologically active hits. Recently, it has also been validated in the emerging field of G-protein coupled receptors structure based virtual screening.

Resident Perceptions of Black bear Management in South Central Kentucky

The growth and sprawl of the American black bear (Ursus americanus) population have been observed and monitored in the past two decades, especially in south-central Kentucky. To better manage human-black bear interaction and develop informed policy and best practices, the current study sought to 1) understand south-central Kentucky residents’ current knowledge of and previous experience with black bears, 2) investigate residents’ attitudes toward black bears and regulated hunting in wildlife management;and 3) identify residents’ level of acceptance of various black bear related management actions in south-central Kentucky. From February to April 2017, residents of London and Stearns districts (southeastern regions) of the Daniel Boone National Forest, a black bear habitat, were invited to participate in this study. The results from 139 completed surveys showed that residents lacked sufficient knowledge about black bear populations in the region and received minimal information regarding black bear management efforts. In comparison to education efforts and relocation, regulated black bear hunting could be a cost-effective option to promote responsible use of wildlife resources and black bear population control. This study provided lessons and recommendations for black bear management in south-central Kentucky and may be of utilization for any other wildlife conservation areas.

Lumbar Hernia: An Unusual Presentation of bear Maul

Introduction: Typical lumbar hernias are very rare surgical conditions. Lumbar hernias can be congenital or acquired. About 25% of all lumbar hernias have a traumatic etiology. Case-Report: We here reported a case of a 55-year-old male who was mauled by a bear. The patient developed an atypical lumbar hernia after 6 months of sustaining craniofacial and abdominal trauma. Open hernioplasty, which was a very challenging job, was done in this patient. Conclusion: Post traumatic lumbar hernias have been reported but till today no case of lumbar hernia following an attack by a bear has been reported in literature. Both acute and long-standing post-traumatic lumbar hernias are rare but challenging conditions. The corrective surgical procedure becomes more complex as hernial defect enlarges. Reconstruction is a challenging aspect of lumbar hernia surgery.

Blood Typing of Asiatic Black bear (Ursus thibetanus)

[Objective]The paper was to analyze whether Asiatic black bear( Ursus thibetanus) had different blood group systems. [Method]Whole blood samples were collected from 40 Asiatic black bears in Fujian Province,China. Tube method was used to detect antibodies in plasma,and antibody isotype was determined with 2-mercaptoethanol. Plasma was further analyzed by mass spectrometry. [Result] The plasma from four black bears had antibodies,possibly Ig M isoform,which could agglutinate RBCs from 30 bears. Blood samples from 10 bears were tested by human blood typing reagents. The results showed that four black bears had blood type like human type O,while six bears had like human type B. Mass spectrometry results demonstrated that plasma protein had extensive homology to serum albumin-like isoform 1 found in giant panda( Ailuropoda melanoleuca). [Conclusion]Asiatic black bear might have at least one blood group system with two blood types. If the sick bear needs blood transfusion,a cross-matching test is necessary. Moreover,giant panda might receive blood from Asiatic black bear in case of emergency.
