Acute Barium poisoning is uncommon in clinical practice.It occurs primarily due to the ingestion of soluble Barium compounds such as BaCJ that causes gastroenteritis(vomiting,diarrhea,and abdominal pain),hypokalemia,hypertension,cardiac arrhythmia,and skeletal muscle paralysis.Recently,several related cases of Barium poisoning due to food contamination occurred in the vicinity of our hospital.We present the data for these cases and describe a representative case that we managed.

The influence of Barium addition to a Ni/Al2O3 catalyst on the reaction intermediates formed,the activity,resistance of the catalyst to coking,and properties of the coke formed after acetic acid steam reforming were investigated in this study.The results showed the drastic effects of Barium addition on the physicochemical properties and performances of the catalyst.The solid-phase reaction between alumina and BaO formed BaAl2O4,which re-constructed the alumina structure,resulting in a decrease in the specific surface area and an increase in the resistance of metallic Ni to sintering.The addition of Barium was also beneficial for enhancing the catalytic activity,resulting from the changed catalytic reaction network.The in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) study of the acetic acid steam reforming indicated that Barium could effectively suppress the accumulation of the reaction intermediates of carbonyl,formate,and C=C functional groups on the catalyst surface,attributed to its relatively high ability to cause the gasification of these species.In addition,coking was considerably more significant over the Ba-Ni/Al2O3 catalyst.Moreover,the Ba-Ni/Al2O3 catalyst was more stable than the Ni/Al2O3catalyst,owing to the distinct forms of coke formed (carbon nanotube form over the Ba-Ni/Al2O3 catalyst,and the amorphous form over the Ni/Al2O3 catalyst).

Hydroxyquinone compounds, such as 1,4-dihydroxyanthraquinone and alizarin sulfonate, are widely used in dye manufacturing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and other industries. However, the treatment of hydroxyquinone-containing wastewater has seldom been examined. This study used a precipitation method with Barium salt to treat nano-silver industrial wastewater. The results show that Barium chloride was a suitable reagent for significantly degrading COD and color from nano-silver wastewater. When the initial pH value was 10.5, 8 g of BaCl2·2H2O were added to 100 mL of wastewater. After reaction at 15℃ for 1 h, the removal efficiencies of COD and color in the nano-silver wastewater were 85.6% and 97.1%, respectively. Simulated wastewater containing sodium alizarin-3-sulfonate (ARS) or purpurin was used to further investigate the removal mechanism of hydroxyquinone compounds. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and some related experiments showed that hydroxyquinone compounds can directly react with Barium ions in the solution so as to transfer from wastewater to precipitate. In addition, the newly produced Barium sulfate particles have positive surface charges, which can improve the removal efficiency of hydroxyquinone compounds due to electrostatic attraction.

Microwave(MW)frequency based wireless communications and electronic devices became prospective due to several ramifications.To meet this need,a series of neodymium ions(Nd3+)substituted Barium ferrite composites with composition(20)BaO:(80-x)Fe2 O3:(x)Nd2 O3(0≤x≤3 mol%)was prepared at1100℃using solid-state reaction method.We evaluated the effect of various Nd3+ions contents on the surface morphology,structure,and magnetic properties of the as-synthesized Barium ferrite composites.Meanwhile,microwave reflection loss,complex permittivity and permeability were determined using the transmission/reflection line method in the X-band(8-12 GHz).SEM image of the composites shows that the surface morphology consists of rough and porous microstructures.XRD patterns of the un-doped composites reveal the existence of BaFe12O19(hexagonal)and Fe21.333O32(tetragonal)crystalline phases.Furthermore,a new hexagonal crystalline phase of Ba6 Nd2 Fe4 O15 with the crystallite sizes between 15 and 67 nm is observed due to Nd3+ions substitution in the composite.The saturation magnetization of the composite containing 2 mol%of Nd3+does not exhibit any significant alteration compared to the one devoid of Nd3+.The complex relative permitivity and permeability of the achieved composites enriched in Ba6 Nd2 Fe4 O15 and BaFe2 O4 phases disclose significant MW frequency dependence.The composites also display selective MW absorption in the X-band which could be useful for diverse applications.

The Co/CeO2 catalysts promoted with Ba or K were prepared to study the effect of promoter on the catalytic performance of ammonia synthesis. The results show that the presence of Ba or K promoter changes the properties of CeO2-supported Co catalysts including the surface area, the crystallite size and the morphology of CeO2, the reduction degree of cobalt species and the adsorption performance of hydrogen and nitrogen. As a consequence, the samples promoted with an appropriate amount of Ba show higher ammonia synthesis rates, while the catalysts with high Ba loading or K promoter all exhibit low catalytic activities.

When low-salinity water containing sulfate ions is injected into carbonate reservoirs, rock dissolution and in situ precipitation occur, altering rock permeability and wettability. Particularly, when Barium ions are present in formation water,they react chemically with SO;, and BaSO;is precipitated. These reactions can cause a serious impact on the efficiency of enhanced oil recovery（EOR）. Therefore, the main purpose of this study was to identify EOR efficiency induced by lowsalinity waterflooding（LSWF） when Ba;is present in carbonate reservoirs. From the experimental results, it was confirmed that the permeability calculated by the measured pressure difference was improved because of rock dissolution predominating over in situ precipitation for the case of low Ba;concentrations. In the analysis of wettability alteration through the measurements of relative permeabilities before and after LSWF, the higher Ba;concentration case consumed more SO;in precipitating the BaSO;, resulting in weaker wettability alteration due to the reduction of sulfate activity.These phenomena ultimately influenced EOR efficiency, i.e., the oil recovery was greater for the lower Ba;concentration.

We demonstrate wavelength-selectable visible emissions from a miniature crystalline laser that combines the stimulated Raman scattering （SRS） effect in an Nd：YVO4 crystal with intracavity frequency mixing in an angle-tuned beta Barium borate （BBO） crystal. The presented laser is operating on demand at any one of three wavelengths in the green-yellow spectral region. Up to 600, 560, and 200 mW output powers at 559, 532, and 588 nm, respectively, are obtained from the continuous wave （CW） laser having a 18 mm long resonator and a 3.8 W laser diode end pumping. The pump threshold for each visible wavelength is less than 0.4 W.

In this study,2-[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy]acetic acid(MEEAA)was used to modify the surface of Barium titanate nanoparticles(BT NPs)to enhance the compatibility and dispersion of the BT ceramic fillers in polymer matrix.A uniform coating layer with a thickness about 2 nm was formed on the surface of BT after modification.The poly(vinylidene fluoride)-hexafluoropropene[P(VDF-HFP)]composites filled with MEEAA-modified BT NPs achieved higher permittivity(∼13 at 3.0 vol%filler)and discharged energy density than that of the untreated BT filled composite.The maximum discharge energy density of 7.8 J/cm^(3)was obtained in the nanocomposites with 3 vol%MEEAA-modified BT NPs at electric field of 425 kV/mm,which is 77%higher than that of 4.4 J/cm^(3)of pure P(VDF-HFP)film at electric field of 420 kV/mm.

AIM:To evaluate the effectiveness of Barium impaction therapy for patients with colonic diverticular bleeding.METHODS:We reviewed the clinical charts of patients in whom therapeutic Barium enema was performed for the control of diverticular bleeding between August2010 and March 2012 at Yokohama Rosai Hospital.Twenty patients were included in the review,consisting of 14 men and 6 women.The median age of the patients was 73.5 years.The duration of the followup period ranged from 1 to 19 mo(median:9.8 mo).Among the 20 patients were 11 patients who required the procedure for re-bleeding during hospitalization,6patients who required it for re-bleeding that developed after the patient left the hospital,and 3 patients who required the procedure for the prevention of rebleeding.Barium(concentration:150 w%/v%)was administered per the rectum,and the leading edge of the contrast medium was followed up to the cecum by fluoroscopy.After confirmation that the ascending colon and cecum were filled with Barium,the enema tube was withdrawn,and the patient’s position was changed every 20 min for 3 h.RESULTS:Twelve patients remained free of rebleeding during the follow-up period(range:1-19mo)after the therapeutic Barium enema,including 9men and 3 women with a median age of 72.0 years.Re-bleeding occurred in 8 patients including 5 men and 3 women with a median age of 68.5 years:4developed early re-bleeding,defined as re-bleeding that occurs within one week after the procedure,and the remaining 4 developed late re-bleeding.The DFI(disease-free interval)decreased 0.4 for 12 mo.Only one patient developed a complication from therapeutic Barium enema(colonic perforation).CONCLUSION:Therapeutic Barium enema is effective for the control of diverticular hemorrhage in cases where the active bleeding site cannot be identified by colonoscopy.
