Disease and Humanity： ba jin and His Ward Four： A Wartime Novel of China

＂Family＂ as ba jin＇s intense concern seems to be a central icon of his literary works, carrying through from his Family （1933） to Cold Nights （1947）. After briefly reassessing ba jin＇s literary contribution in his early phase, this essay will focus more on ba jin＇s novels written in the 1940s, particularly his Ward Four, which rarely attracts critical attention. For Lu Xun, mental disease in China was more crucial than physical disease. ba jin uses both mental and physical diseases to explore humanity in a wartime hospital. ba jin＇s early novels were infused with more radical ideas, but as a more mature writer in the 1940s he provided readers with a new perspective to explore and understand society.

Regionalism and Non-regionalism of ba jin’s Works

Modern Chinese literature witnessed the popularity of Sichuan writers like Li Jieren and Sha Ting,who were well known for their distinctive regional characters and the experiences portrayed in their works,telling unadulterated“Sichuan Stories”and depicting lives in the context of ba-Shu *** even consider their works to be the modern“Chronicles of Huayang(Huayang Guo Zhi)in modern time.”However,when we look at ba jin,his works are not like typical Sichuan writers(such as Guo Moruo,Li Jieren,Sha Ting,and Ai Wu).He did not pay much attention to depicting the customs and lives in Sichuan,and we can seldom find the flavor of ba-Shu culture in his *** editing Chinese Literature and Regional Culture in the 20th Century in 1995,Yan Jiayan so commented,“To study Sichuan literature ba-Shu culture,it is not appropriate to pick ba jin(though he was a great writer with great contributions)”(Li,1997).As it were,the relationship between ba jin and the ba-Shu culture is *** jin showed his distinctive choices and pursuit in this *** studying the“regionalism”and“non-regionalism”of ba jin’s works,we can better understand ba jin and his *** is also enlightening for us to review the future development of ba-Shu culture.

A Study of ba jin （李尧棠） in Chinese Electronic Media

This paper gives an outline of the core concerns in Chinese Electronic Media, according to the data collection of the webpage about ba jin in Chinese, exploring what is happening to ba jin on the Chinese Internet in China, including the developments on the introductions to ba jin; the biographies of his; the works of his, which takes Turbulent Current Trilogy as an example; as well as politics, especially on anarchism and populism; and images of the female, etc. Besides, it discusses how the criticism and reception of ba jin＇s works online in Chinese are different from those in English in the U.S-America. The paper also analyzes the hidden reasons, most of which are owing to the specific historical and theoretical values, expecting to provide necessary reference for a global understanding and appreciation ofba jin＇s works, to contribute to promotions to study of ba home and abroad.

Feminine and Masculine Dimensions of Feminist Thought and Transcultural Modernism in Republican China

This study examines critical essays and imaginative fiction by three key writers of the Republican period： Mao Dun, ba jin and Lu Yin. I argue that, while Mao Dun and ba jin fuse elements of classical Chinese and modem Western sources so as to create strong heroines and a critique of ＂new men＂ for the purpose of revolutionary cultural and national reform, Lu Yin foregrounds an inward examination of the self, multiple narrative points of view and a dialogical perspective which fuses her protagonists＇ interior consciousness with external reality as well as other characters＇ streams of feeling and thought. My reading of Lu Yin＇s texts reveals that she not only succeeds in bringing communion and solace to her readers but also creates ＂moments of being,＂ markedly similar to Virginia Woolf＇s modernist aesthetics and Walter Benjamin＇s mosaic-like ＂moments of recognition,＂ which allow her characters to perceive ＂wholeness＂ from fragmentary flashes of understanding. These intense moments of awareness enhance Lu Yin＇s dialogic imagination and enable her to create discursive feminine narratives that convey the full complexity of women＇s consciousness while simultaneously resisting the male realist literary discourse and strengthening her feminist-activist agenda in the national public sphere.

An Analysis of the Translations of The Nightingale and the Rose from the Perspective of Skopos Theory

Issue of free translation and literal translation has long been focus of dispute among translators. In this paper, I want to study on how the translator can produce translation that faithful to the source text, how the translator can exercise their freedom in the constraints of faithful rule. The main theoretical model adopted in this paper is Vermeer’s Skopos theory. Oscar Wilde’s The Nightingale and the Rose and its two Chinese versions will serve as case study data.
