At present,the power system is more inclined towards disturbances,such as voltage variations and unbalanced load conditions,due to the grid's complexity and load growth.These challenges emphasize the integration of the compensating devices,such as battery storage(BS)and D-STATCOMs.In this regard,this current paper exhibits a novel energy management system(EMS)of a combined BS and D-STATCOM to compensate the power system during disturbances.The EMS is based on a fractional order sliding mode control(FOSMC)to drive the voltage source converters(VSCs)such that the active power is independently absorbed/injected by the BS,whereas the reactive power is independently absorbed/injected by the D-STATCOM depending upon the disturbance situation.FOSMC is a robust non-linear controller in which the Riemann-Liouville(RL)function is employed to design the sliding surface and the exponential reaching law is used to minimize the chattering phenomenon.The stability of the FOSMC in the proposed EMS is proved using the Lyapunov candidate function.In order to validate the performance of the proposed EMS,a model of a 400 V,180 kVA radial distributor along with a BS and D-STATCOM is simulated in MATLAB/Simulink environment in two test cases.The results prove that the proposed EMS with FOMSC effectively compensates the power system under voltage variations and unbalanced load conditions with rapid tracking,fast convergence and upright damping.Furthermore,the results have been compared with the classical proportional integral(PI)control and fixed frequency SMC(FFSMC),and they demonstrate the superiority of the proposed EMS with FOSMC in power system applications.

Distributed generation(DG)are critical components for active distribution system(ADS).However,this may be a serious impact on power system due to their volatility.To this problem,interactive load and battery storage may be a best solution.This paper firstly investigates operation characteristics of interactive load and battery storage,including operation flexibility,inter-temporal operation relations and active-reactive power relations.Then,a multi-period coordinated activereactive scheduling model considering interactive load and battery storage is proposed in order to minimize overall operation costs over a specific duration of time.The model takes into accounts operation characteristics of interactive load and battery storage and focuses on coordination between DGs and them.Finally,validity and effectiveness of the proposed model are demonstrated based on case study of a medium-voltage 135-bus distribution system.

Decarbonising the built environment cost-effectively is a complex challenge public and private organisations are facing in their effort to tackle climate change.In this context,this work presents an integrated Technology Selection and Operation(TSO)optimisation model for distributed energy systems in commercial buildings.The purpose of the model is to simultaneously optimise the selection,capacity and operation of photovoltaic(PV)and battery systems;serving as a decision support framework for assessing technology investments.A steady-state mixed-integer linear programming(MILP)approach is employed to formulate the optimisation problem.The virtue of the TSO model comes from employing granular state-of-the-art datasets such as half-hourly electricity demands and prices,irradiance levels from weather stations,and technology databases;while also considering building specific attributes.Investment revenues are obtained from reducing grid electricity costs and providing fast-frequency response(FFR)ancillary services.A case study of a distribution centre in London,UK is showcased with the goal to identify which technologies can minimise total energy costs against a conventional system setup serving as a benchmark.Results indicate the best technology configuration is a combination of lithium-ion batteries and mono-crystalline silicon PVs worth a total investment of ￡1.72 M.Due to the available space in the facility,the preferred PV capacity is 1.76 MW,while the battery system has a 1.06 MW power capacity and a 1.56 MWh energy capacity.Although PV performance varies across seasons,the solution indicates almost 30%of the energy used on-site can be supplied by PVs while achieving a carbon reduction of 26%.Nonetheless,PV and battery systems seem to be a questionable investment as the proposed solution has an 8-year payback,despite a 5-year NPV savings of ￡300k,implying there is still a performance gap for such systems to be massively deployed across the UK.Overall,the TSO model provides valuable insights into real-world proj

The increasing number of distributed energy resources(DERs),advancing communication and computation technologies,and reliability concerns of the customers have caused an intense interest in the concept of microgrid.Although DERs are the biggest motivation of the microgrids due to their intermittent generation characteristics,they constitute a risk for system reliability.battery storage systems(BSSs)stand as one of the most effective solutions for this reliability problem.However,the inappropriate use of BSS creates other operational problems in power systems.In order to deal with these concerns explicitly in microgrids,an optimized microgrid central controller(MGCC)is the key factor,which controls the realtime operation of a microgrid.This work proposes a model predictive control(MPC)based MGCC that will provide optimal control of the microgrid,considering economic and operational constraints.The proposed system will minimize the energy cost of the microgrid by utilizing mixed-integer linear programming(MILP)assuming the presence of DERs and BSS as well as the bi-directional grid connection.Moreover,the aging effect of BSS will be considered in the proposed optimization problem which will provide an up-to-date system model.The proposed method is evaluated using real load and photovoltaic(PV)generation data.

This paper proposes the generation scheduling approach for a microgrid comprised of conventional generators, wind energy generators, solar photovoltaie （PV） systems, battery storage, and electric vehicles. The electrical vehicles （EVs） play two different roles： as load demands during charging, and as storage units to supply energy to remaining load demands in the MG when they are plugged into the microgrid （MG）. Wind and solar PV powers are intermittent in nature; hence by including the battery storage and EVs, the MG becomes more stable. Here, the total cost objective is minimized considering the cost of conventional generators, wind generators, solar PV systems and EVs. The proposed optimal scheduling problem is solved using the hybrid differential evolution and harmony search （hybrid DE-HS） algorithm including the wind energy generators and solar PV system along with the battery storage and EVs. Moreover, it requires the least investment.

Distributed energy resources have been proven to be an effective and promising solution to enhance power system resilience and improve household-level reliability.In this paper,we propose a method to evaluate the reliability value of a photovoltaic(PV)energy system with a battery storage system(BSS)by considering the probability of grid outages causing household blackouts.Considering this reliability value,which is the economic profit and capital cost of PV+BSS,a simple formula is derived to calculate the optimal planning strategy.This strategy can provide household-level customers with a simple and straightforward expression for invested PV+BSS capacity.Case studies on 600 households located in eight zones of the US for the period of 2006 to 2015 demonstrate that adding the reliability value to economic profit allows households to invest in a larger PV+BSS and avoid loss of load caused by blackouts.Owing to the differences in blackout hours,households from the 8 zones express distinct willingness to install PV+BSS.The greater the probability of blackout,the greater revenue that household can get from the PV+BSS.The simulation example shows that the planning strategy obtained by proposed model has good economy in the actual operation and able to reduce the economic risk of power failure of the household users.This model can provide household with an easy and straightforward investment strategy of PV+BSS capacity.

Nanogrid is “The new ray of hope” for people living in remote isolated locations as well as where power supply reliability is poor. A nanogrid is a small power capacity distribution system with the ability to operate standalone or with a utility grid. It consists of local power production supplying local loads and energy storage systems. In this paper, an innovative inverter design is presented, which converts the power in a single stage. It is superior to the traditional two-stage inverter system and can supply hybrid loads (AC and DC loads) with a single input. System AC and DC bus voltages are regulated under both steady-state and dynamic load variation conditions in the nanogrid. Simulation results are presented which confirm the suitability of the inverter and its control strategy for a hybrid nanogrid system.
