Strings of Ion Crystals in a Linear Trap for Quantum Information Processing

Strings of laser cooled ^40 Ca＋ crystals have been successfully confined in our home-built linear ion trap, and ready for quantum information processing. We find the cloud-crystal phase transition of the trapped ions to be strongly sensitive to the frequencies of the Doppler cooling lasers and to the trapping voltage. The quantum jump of a single ion has been observed by controlling the quadrupole transition of the ion by a weak laser with ultra-narrow bandwidth.

A kind of ultra-narrow dual-channel filter is proposed in principle and demonstrated experimentally. This filter is designed by means of two sampled fibre Bragg gratings （SFBGs）, where one is periodic O-π sampling and the other is symmetrical spatial sampling. The former can create two stopbands in the transmission spectra and the latter can produce two ultra-narrow passbands. Our filter has the 3-dB bandwidth of about 1 pm, whose value is two orders of magnitude less than the bandwidth of the traditional SFBG filters. The proposed filter has a merit that the channel spacing remains unchanged when tuning the filter.

A broadband tunable terahertz filter based on a zone plate is demonstrated in our terahertz time domain spec- trometer. The central bandpass frequency covers the whole spectral range of the terahertz wave emitted from a ZnTe emitter, from 0.5 THz to 2.5 THz, and can be tuned continuously by simply moving the zone plate along the terahertz beam path. The peak transmission is about 40% and the bandwidth varies from 0.16 THz to 0.25 THz at different bandpass frequencies when the aperture size is kept constant.

A wafer-level testable silicon-on-insulator-based microring modulator is demonstrated with high modulation speed, to which the grating couplers are integrated as the fiber-to-chip interfaces. Cost-efflcient fabrications are realized with the help of optical structure and etching depth designs. Grating couplers and waveguides are patterned and etched together with the same slab thickness. Finally we obtain a 3-dB coupling bandwidth of about 6Ohm and 10 Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero modulation by wafer-level optical and electrical measurements.

Using the full-vector plane-wave expansion method, a kind of PMMA-based polarization-maintaining microstructured optical fibre （PM-mPOF） is theoretically studied. Dependence of the cutoff wavelengths of the two orthogonal polarization states （polarized along the two principal axes of PM-mPOF） on the structure parameters of the fibre is investigated in detail A single-polarization single-mode （SPSM） PM-mPOF working in the visible region is designed and optimized with the result of the maximum SPSM bandwidth of 140nm.

Generation of 170-fs Laser Pulses at 1053 nm by a Passively Mode-Locked Yb：YAG Laser

A novel method is developed to obtain 1.05μm laser operation with a Yb：YAG laser. By using a Yb：YAG crystal with proper length and doping concentration, a femtosecond Yb： YAG laser is realized at the central wavelength of 1053nm. The measured pulse duration and spectral bandwidth （FWHM） are 170fs and 7nm; the repetition rate is 80 MHz. Under a power pump of 2 W, an average mode-locking power of 180mW is achieved.

The method of loading increase of package networks is considered. This method is based on the dynamic redistribution of the throughput of switch equipment among carrying capacities (bandwidths) of its ports. Redistribution is fulfilled synchronously with the pulsations of packet streams, which move over the entrances of these ports. In the complement of switch equipment, it entered the adaptive mechanism of automatic real time redistribution of the throughput of switch equipment among the bandwidths of ports. This mechanism allows to decrease the quantity of time intervals, when intensities of packet streams are exceeded by the set bandwidths of ports, and, thus to increase the load of equipment by useful traffic.
