Five years Retrospective Study of avian coccidiosis in a Veterinary Clinic Bukuru Plateau State Nigeria

This study was conducted to evaluate the incidence of avian coccidiosis and its associated various risk factors such as age,type of birds and season in a private veterinary clinic in Bukuru,Plateau State Ngeria.A total of 9406 cases during 2013–2017 were analysed and 1556 of them were positive for *** are several reports on the prevalence of avian coccidiosis by previous researchers;however,in this study we evaluated the prevalence of avian coccidiosis in the study area and its economic *** prevalence of 12.14%in 2013,18.78%in 2014,18.21%in 2015,16.82%in 2016 and 19.07%in 2017 were *** overall prevalence of 85.02%was *** average prevalence of coccidiosis based on this five years study is 17%.The association between coccidiosis and age of the birds was determined and age 5-8 weeks becomes most effective period with wet season having high percentage prevalence of *** on the type of birds,coccidiosis is prevalence almost in equal proportion in both broilers and *** losses caused by avian coccidiosis could be both direct and indirect components which may include the cost of control measures,inadequate good hygiene practices,production losses and lack of prophylaxis *** control of avian coccidiosis can be achieved through good sanitary measures by avoiding water spillage on the pen floor,overcrowded stocking density,the use of prophylaxis-anticoccidials and proper good vaccination practices.

Introduction avian coccidiosis caused by Eimeria species is recognized as the parasitic disease with the greatest economic impact on poultry industries *** tenella,one of the seven species of protozoan parasites,is the most pathogenic species that cause cecal *** investigate the virulence between different *** isolates(or strains) and screen vaccine candidate strain,a comparison of the pathogenicity of two *** isolates from the Hebei and Xinjiang province of China was evaluated in specific pathogen free(SPF) *** & Methods Seventy 25-day-old SPF chickens were randomly assigned to two *** isolates with 6 groups of 5 chickens were inoculated with 5×10,1×10,5×10,1×10,2.5×10and 5×10 sporulated oocysts,*** ten were used as a non-infected *** surviving birds were weighed on the 5.5th day postinoculation and were *** order to further research the pathogenicity of Zhangjiakou isolate,forty eight 25-day-old SPF chickens were infected with 5×10,2.5×10,5×10,1×10,2.5×10,5×10,1×10,and 0 sporulated oocysts,*** assessment of the severity of the infection was based on mortality,cecal lesion scores,and survivor weight *** 60%(3/5) chickens inoculated with 5×10 oocysts of Xinjiang isolate died 5 days after inoculation,20%(1/5) in the group of 1×10 on 6 ***,all chickens infected with Zhangjiakou isolate were alive even the inoculation was 1×10 sporulated *** with the non-infected control,no significant difference in mean body weight was observed in all Zhangjiakou isolate inoculated groups,but significant difference appeared in the groups of 1×10,2.5×10 and 5×10 of Xinjiang *** a few scattered petechiae were seen on the cecal mucosa even in the seriously infected ***,in the groups of Xinjiang isolate,the mean body weight was decreased gradually with the increasing inoculation *** bleeding is severe,with clotting appearing
