Canol. and oat forage potential.may be affected by cl.matic conditions when sown earl..The objective of this study was to eval.ate the forage canol. and oat potential.in four earl. sowing dates(September 11 and 25;October 9 and 23)during the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 cycl.s in Matamoros,Coahuil.,Mexico.Growth cycl. duration,chemical.composition,dry matter(DM),crude protein(CP),and net energy for l.ctation(NEl.yiel.s were determined.High temperatures and l.ng photoperiods affected crops seeded on September 11,accel.rating growth and reducing canol.(26.6%-31.7%)and oat(15.8%)DM yiel.s.As of September 25,canol. cv IMC 205 reached DM yiel.s(7746 kg ha^(-1)-9276 kg ha^(-1))simil.r to those obtained by oat(8115 kg ha^(-1)-9507 kg ha^(-1)),whil. canol. cv Hyol. 401 obtained such yiel.s onl. until.October 23.Canol. chemical.composition was better than that found in oat,with higher CP,but l.wer acid detergent fiber(ADF)and neutral.detergent fiber(NDF)contents.Canol. equal.d oat CP yiel.s(972 kg ha^(-1)-1215 kg ha^(-1))in the first sowing date,whil. in the other three other canol. sowings reached higher yiel.s(1193 kg ha^(-1)-1889 kg ha^(-1)).As for NEl.yiel.s,no difference was observed between both species.The best sowing date for canol. is from September 25 on,with CP production advantages over oat.

The oat panicl. components were changed by the forms of nitrogen use infl.encing productivity. The aim of the study was to determine the direct and indirect effects of oat panicl. components on grain yiel. by N-fertil.zer rates in succession systems of high and reduced rel.ase of N-residual. The study was conducted in the years 2013 and 2014 in a randomized compl.te bl.ck with four repl.cations in a factorial.3 × 2, for nitrogen rates (30, 60 and 120 kg·ha-1) and oat cul.ivars (Barbarasul.and Brisasul. the soybean/oat and corn/oat systems. The panicl. weight and grain per panicl. show greater sensitivity to the change of nitrogen rates. Grain yiel. was favored by the direct effect of harvest index panicl. and indirect by grain weight per panicl.. In the system soybean/ oat, the grain weight of panicl. shows greater efficiency in promoting positive direct effects on grain yiel..
