In recent years, autonomous learning that centres on the learner is getting increasing interest in institutions of higher learning in China. This paper is an attempt to examine why the teachercentred approach that often produces unsatisfactory results is widely employed in the country. It also presents the rationale and discusses how both Chinese teachers and learners could do to make autonomous learning effective. The authors stresses that the learner should set his/her goals（s）, plan the workframe and carry out his/her learning accordingly whilst the teacher should undertakes proper monitoring and evaluation. The authors hold that the learner's age, aptitude and intelligence, motivation, personality, cognitive and learning styles deeply influence autonomous learning. As most Chinese learners of FL may like to work independently rather than collaboratively, this might adversely affect their autonomous learning.

With the development of science and technology, knowledge is being replaced faster and faster. The students nowadays must be cultivated into lifelong learners to adjust themselves to the times of knowledge explosion. This study is to arouse students to be aware of the importance of autonomy in English learning and to enable them to have assistive attitude toward English learning. After gaining the knowledge of autonomy, this thesis give the whole society, including schools, parents, and students themselves some ways to foster and develop their autonomous learning.

Original thesis-reading capability is of great importance to English major post-graduates' research ability. This paper focuses on the influence of after-class thesis reading on postgraduates' reading and writing ability. By means of both doing an interview and making field-notes, data analysis provides convincing evidences to illustrate research questions. The interview covers the selection of reading materials, strategies of coping with new expressions and reading habits, which are key factors in influence of postgraduates' reading efficiency and in turn will influence their reading and writing capability. The result is helpful for English major postgraduates to cultivate their autonomous learning capability and improve their thesis- reading efficiency,thus developing their research ability.
