Utilization of Marble Dust for Improving The Geotechnic Characteristics Of Collapsible Soil

An environment friendly and cost effective factor of collapsible soilstabilization with the help of industrial waste has been widely adoptedin this research. Buildings which are constructed on collapsible soils aresubjected to large deformations and shear failure. Collapsible soil can bebroadly categorized as those soils susceptible to a large reduction in volumeupon wetting. The mechanism usually involved in rapid volume reductionentails breaking of bonds at coarse particle contacts by weakening of finegrainedmaterials brought there by surface tension in evaporating *** research presents the effects of using marble dust on the geotechnicalproperties of Collapsible soil as a new stabilizing technique. A series ofexperimental tests are carried for samples of collapsing soil with andwithout stabilization using marble dust for dry and soaked *** collapsible soil was mixed with marble dust at different contents of(0, 10, 20, 30%,40% and50%). The results indicated that, The optimumwater content decreases by 20.67% at marble content of 50%, liquidlimit decreses by35.41% at marble content of 50%and frictional angle forsoaked soil decreases by 66.09% at marble content of 50% while un soakedsoil decreases by54.68% at marble content of 50%. The maximum drydensity increases 5.91% at marble content of 50% and cohesion for soakedincreases314.2% at marble content of 50% while un soaked soil increases206.7% at marble content of 50%. It has been found that the adoptedmarble has a good effect in controlling the collapsing potential which isreduced by as much as 64.32% at marble content of 30%.

Evaluation of the Compaction of a No-Till Vertisol Field Using Methods of Cone Index and Pedotransfer Function in Semi-arid Context of Morocco

This study evaluated compaction level of a 15-year old no-till vertisol field crop(40.91%clay,44.16%loam and 14.93%sand)having organic matter contents of 2.23%and 2.91%in 0-10 cm and 10-20 cm profiles,*** bulk density ranged from 1.30 g/cm^3 to 1.80 g/cm^3 in the field boundaries,and from 1.01 g/cm^3 to 1.40 g/cm^3 in its *** field showed a gradient of limestone from 3%to 13%.Measurements were done to evaluate soil strength(cone index)and soil plasticity(atterberg limits).The soil strength showed different levels of compaction from 4.5 MPa to 16 MPa to distinct five spatial clusters in the *** soil compactness was related to limestone gradient according the correlation found between the soil strength and limestone *** soil plasticity test showed occurrence of plastic limits when the moisture content decreased from 26%to 15%within 5 d *** atterberg limits showed the importance of respecting intervention delays to avoid soil compaction due to its plasticity.A pedotransfer function was developed using soil parameters of texture,organic matter,bulk density,cohesion,internal friction angle and moisture content to compute its precompression *** showed importance of compaction in the field extremities due to importance of machines/tools traffic without avoiding cropping interventions during soil plasticity *** soil strength(as measured value)was correlated to precompression stress(as estimated values)to show the importance of using pedotransfer function as significant method to evaluate indirectly compactness or susceptibility to compaction of the studied vertisol.

Physical Characterization and Elaboration Discussion of a Clay-PEG 6000 Composite with Natural Clay Matrix

In this paper, we compare different nanoclay-PEG composites and the influence of the input parameters especially the percentage of PEG and the clay size. Because of the facility of material elaboration, dried state with grinding, we adopted a complete experiments plan to obtain a maximum of robustness of the responses. For each sample, we made an XRD analysis to see if we obtain the intercalation of the PEG 6000 (Polyethylene Glycol 6000) within the clay sheets. The characterization adopted consists on the measurement of the shrinking of some cylinders we made, the liquidity and plasticity limits according to the Casagrande protocol used in geotechnical clays characterizations. We utilize also the methylen blue protocol to estimate the variation of the specific surface of ionic exchange of the clay sheets according to the PEG 6000 percentage and the clay sizes. SEM microscopy permits to visualize some of the phases detected by the XRD analysis. The TEM microscopy permits also to see the amorphous phases created by the grinding protocol which affects significantly the specific surface and the shrinking of the new materials. For each section, we made some conclusions with interpretation in order to integrate these results in civil engineering, classical/artisanal material construction and geotechnical fields.
