Assessing acceptance in mindfulness with direct-worded items:The development and initial validation of the athlete Mindfulness Questionnaire

Purpose:The purpose of the current study was to develop and validate a sport-specific mindfulness measure,the athlete Mindfulness Questionnaire(AMQ),through 5 related studies using 4 separate samples of Chinese *** AMQ is a 3-factor measure designed to assess mindfulness that reflects present-moment attention,awareness,and acceptance in a sport ***:In Study 1,an initial pool of items was generated based on previous literature,existing mindfulness scales,as well as interviews with and feedback from the athletes,coaches,and mindfulness *** support for the 3-factor structure of the AMQ was established via exploratory factor analysis in Study 2,and cross-validated through confirmatory factor analysis in Studies 3 and *** Study 5,a modified 3-factor AMQ with direct-worded acceptance items was examined in a fourth independent ***:Convergent and concurrent validities of the acceptance subscale failed to be established in Studies 3 and 4 which may be due to the inattention and confusion of the athletes whilst interpreting the reverse-worded items.A modified 16-item AMQ in Study 5 displayed satisfactory model fit and acceptable internal *** importantly,convergent and concurrent validities of the 16-item AMQ were ***3 subscales showed significant positive associations with mindfulness,flow,well-being,and positive affect and significant negative associations with experiential avoidance,burnout,and negative ***:The AMQ is a psychometrically sound measure of mindfulness in a sport *** importance of using direct-worded acceptance items is discussed.

This study investigated the factors that are associated with sleep disturbances among Chinese *** quality and associated factors were assessed by the athlete Sleep Screening Questionnaire(ASSQ,n?394,aged 18–32 years,47.6%female).Sleep difficulty score(SDS)and level of sleep problem(none,mild,moderate,or severe)were used to classify participants'sleep *** variables were analyzed by Chi-square or fisher's exact *** ordinal logistic regression analysis was used to explore factors with poor sleep(SDS8).Approximately 14.2%of participants had moderate to severe sleep problem(SDS8).Fifty-nine percent of the athletes reported sleep disturbance during travel,while 43.3%experienced daytime dysfunction when travelling for *** significant difference was found in the SDS category between gender,sports level and *** with evening chronotype were more likely to report worse sleep than athletes with morning and intermediate chronotype(OR,2.25;95%CI,1.44–3.52;pathletes,chronotype,travel-related issues,age and years of training should be taken into consideration.

Osteomyelitis of the pubis in a young athlete revealed by severe abdominal pain

Acute osteomyelitis is a common condition in children. Only early diagnosis prevents complications. The location at the pubic bones is very rare, even exceptional at the pubis symphis. We report a case of osteomyelitis of the pubis in a young athlete of 14 years old whose symptoms were discussing an acute abdomen, to illustrate the unusual clinical presentation, so as not to miss the diagnosis and avoid unnecessary laparotomy.

Background: There are links between physical exercise, fine particles and the prevalence of exercise-induced bronchospasm (EIB). Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of exercise-induced bronchospasm in students of sciences and techniques of physical activities and sports (STAPS) exercising in a hot, humid and relatively polluted environment. Methods: Twenty-two first-year undergraduate students, including 11 in PE and 11 in SPORT, aged 21.64 ± 1.80 years, participated in a football match. Resting spirometry was performed before and 5 minutes after the match. During the match, particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) was measured every 10 minutes around the football pitch. Ambient temperature and relative humidity were recorded. The diagnosis of EIB was based on a decrease in FEV1 of at least 10% after the match. If there was a decrease, the participant was considered susceptible to EIB. Results: Five subjects were positive for exercise-induced bronchospasm, a percentage of 22%. Ambient temperature and relative humidity were 34.22˚C ± 1.38˚C and 52.2% ± 4.97%, respectively. Concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 were between 53.3 - 115.5 µg/m3 and 75.5 - 168.2 µg/m3, respectively, exceeding WHO limits. Conclusion: These results show a high incidence of exercise-induced bronchospasm in students without a history of asthma but exercising in a hot, humid and environment polluted by fine particles.

Optimal Total Sleep Duration per Day to Maintain Health-Related Quality of Life in Male Collegiate athletes:A Cross-Sectional Study

Multidisciplinary perspectives on mechanisms of activity of popular immune-enhancing herbal supplements used by athletes

This paper examines cellular and molecular mechanisms that may underpin the purported effects of five herbal supplements in the context of athlete immune function. Ginseng and echinacea are used frequently by athletes, whereas astragalus and elderberry are used infrequently and pequi is just emerging as a possible supplement. In vivo studies of these products on athlete immune function have yielded heterogeneous results, likely due to experimental design differences. Ginseng, echinacea, elderberry, and pequi are considered asterids sensu lato. Ginseng appears to exert strongest effects on components of adaptive immunity, in particular maintaining Thl/Th2 balance of CD4^4 T cells and their downstream effects, via its ginsenosides, flavonoids, and polysaccharides. Echinacea alkamides, caffeic acid derivatives, and polysacchardies may target both innate and adaptive immunity, though perhaps the former more consistently. Elderberry harbors anthocyanins and lectins which may modulate innate immunity. Data on pequi is limited but suggests that carotenoids, phenols, and fatty acids may alter circulating leukocyte populations. More phylogenetically distant, astragalus is a rosid sensu lato and may influence the innate immune system through flavonoids, polysaccharides, and saponins. Supplements generally demonstrate no effects on physiologic parameters such as lactate, oxygen dynamics, or athletic performance. Bioavailability studies indicate that purported bioactive molecules of these supplements may reach circulation in low but therapeutically-relevant quantities. Difficulties in cross- comparisons due to study design differences, coupled with an overall dearth of research on the topic, currently hamper any formal conclusions regarding the efficacy of these supplements as immunoregulators for athletes.

Acute ankle sprain in athletes:Clinical aspects and algorithmic approach

Acute ankle sprain is the most common lower limb injury in athletes and accounts for 16%-40%of all sports-related *** is especially common in basketball,American football,and *** majority of sprains affect the lateral ligaments,particularly the anterior talofibular *** its high prevalence,a high proportion of patients experience persistent residual symptoms and injury recurrence.A detailed history and proper physical examination are diagnostic *** is not indicated for the majority of ankle sprain cases and should be requested according to the Ottawa ankle *** interventions have been recommended in the management of acute ankle sprains including rest,ice,compression,and elevation,analgesic and anti-inflammatory medications,bracing and immobilization,early weight-bearing and walking aids,foot orthoses,manual therapy,exercise therapy,electrophysical modalities and surgery(only in selected refractory cases).Among these interventions,exercise and bracing have been recommended with a higher level of evidence and should be incorporated in the rehabilitation *** exercise program should be comprehensive and progressive including the range of motion,stretching,strengthening,neuromuscular,proprioceptive,and sport-specific ***-making regarding return to the sport in athletes may be challenging and a sports physician should determine this based on the self-reported variables,manual tests for stability,and functional performance *** are some common myths and mistakes in the management of ankle sprains,which all clinicians should be aware of and *** include excessive imaging,unwarranted non-weightbearing,unjustified immobilization,delay in functional movements,and inadequate *** application of an evidence-based algorithmic approach considering the individual characteristics is helpful and should be recommended.

Pelvic region bone density,soft tissue mass,and injury frequency in female professional ballet dancers and soccer athletes

We recently observed a high prevalence of low pelvic bone mineral density(BMD)in female professional ballet *** this population is susceptible to musculoskeletal overuse injuries,we aimed to determine which regions of the pelvis may be at greatest risk compared to general population females(GENPOP)as well as professional female soccer players(SOCCER,a comparison to other elite athletes regularly subjected to high degrees of loading).Three groups of age-matched females[(GENPOP;n=38,27±1yrs),(BALLET;single com-pany,n=36,26±3yrs),(SOCCER;single NWSL■club,n=34,25±1yrs)]consented to have their BMD and body composition assessed(DEXA,GE■).In addition to soft tissue and total and regional BMD analyses,a segmental analysis of the pelvis was performed to determine site-specific BMD for the iliac fossa,iliac fossa/iliac crest/ilium combined,pubic bone,ischium,and sacrum.A mixed-model ANOVA followed by a Tukey's post-hoc test was used to compare the groups(Type-I error;α=0.05).The BALLET group had lower pelvic BMD for all measures(Avg.%Diff.=15%-27%,p<0.001)compared to the SOCCER group and for the ischium(Avg.%Diff.=8%;p=0.007)and sacrum(Avg.%Diff.=7%;p=0.028)compared to the GENPOP *** BALLET group had lower lean mass for all measures compared to the other groups(Avg.%Diff.=12%-18%;p<0.01).Professional ballet performers exhibit reduced pelvic region soft tissue and site-specific BMD not previously detected using standard DEXA *** findings highlight which pelvic regions may benefit from preventative strength training and/or nutritional interventions.

Analysis of stress fractures in athletes based on our clinical experience

AIM:To analyze stress fractures in athletes based on experience from our sports medicine ***:We investigated the association between stress fractures and age,sex,sports level,sports activity,and skeletal site in athletes seen at our sports medicine clinic between September 1991 and April *** fractures of the pars interarticularis were excluded from this ***:During this period(18 years and 8 mo),14276 patients(9215 males and 5061 females)consulted our clinic because of sports-related injuries,and 263 patients(1.8%)[171 males(1.9%)and 92 females(1.8%)]sustained stress *** average age of the patients with stress fractures was 20.2 years(range 10-46 years);112 patients(42.6%)were 15-19 years of age and 90(34.2%)were 20-24 years of ***,90 patients(34.2%)were active at a high recreational level and 173(65.8%)at a competitive *** highest proportion of stress fractures was seen in basketball athletes(21.3%),followed by baseball(13.7%),track and field(11.4%),rowing(9.5%),soccer(8.4%),aerobics(5.3%),and classical ballet(4.9%).The most common sites of stress fractures in these patients were the tibia(44.1%),followed by the rib(14.1%),metatarsal bone(12.9%),ulnar olecranon(8.7%)and pelvis(8.4%).The sites of the stress fractures varied from sport to *** ulnar olecranon was the most common stress fracture site in baseball players,and the rib was the most common in *** and classical ballet athletes predominantly sustained stress fractures of the tibia and metatarsal *** and field and soccer athletes predominantly sustained stress fractures of the tibia and pubic *** athletes predominantly sustained stress fractures of the *** and long distance female runners who sustained multiple stress fractures had the female athlete ***:The results of this analysis showed that stress fractures were seen in high-level young athletes,with similar proportions for males and females

Elbow ulnar collateral ligament injuries in athletes: Can we improve our outcomes?

Injury to the ulnar collateral ligament(UCL) most commonly occurs in the overhead throwing athlete. Knowledge surrounding UCL injury pathomechanics continues to improve, leading to better preventative treatment strategies and rehabilitation programs. Conservative treatment strategies for partial injuries, improved operative techniques for reconstruction in complete tears, adjunctive treatments, as well as structured sport specific rehabilitation programs including resistive exercises for the entire upper extremity kinetic chain are all important factors in allowing for a return to throwing in competitive environments. In this review, we explore each of these factors and provide recommendations based on the available literature to improve outcomes in UCL injuries in athletes.
