Effects of Moisture on Rheological Properties of PAV Aged asphalt binders

For the most coastal areas where the air is very humid,study on the effect of humidity on the performance of asphalt has its practical ***,limited research has been done to investigate the effect of humidity on rheological properties of *** this study,asphalt binders were aged in the pressure aging vessel(PAV)under different conditions of moisture and aging *** Dynamic Shear Rheometer(DSR)and Bending Beam Rheometer(BBR)measurements were conducted to obtain the parameters relating to the complex modulus,phase angle,failure temperature,and creep *** was found that the low temperature performance decreased as evidenced by the results of the creep *** there were no significant differences among conditioned binders based on complex modulus G*and phase angleδ,it was found that theδvalue increased when the humidity increased from 0% to 80% ,and then theδvalue decreased when the humidity increased to 100% .In addition,the results of the failure temperature indicated that the humidity of 80% would be a critical point for the high temperature performance of the asphalt binders.

The effects of graphite on temperature susceptibility of asphalt binders were investigated by penetration test,Ring & Ball softening point test and viscosity *** penetration index(I),viscosity-temperature susceptibility(S),and penetration-viscosity numbers(N)were introduced to evaluate the *** results show that the penetration,softening point and viscosity of asphalt binder increase with the increase of content of *** means that the addition of graphite makes asphalts *** results from I,Nand Sshow that temperature susceptibility is reduced by the addition of graphite.

Chemical and rheological analysis of unaged and aged bio-extended binders containing lignin

The use of alternative renewable sources to totally or partially replace bitumen is one of the most current challenges in the road pavement *** growing energy cost and environmental concerns lead to the necessity to find alternative solutions,by supporting at the same time sustainability and circular economy *** this framework,this paper presents the application of a powder lignin,a natural bio-polymer deriving from byproducts of wood pulp and paper industry,to replace part of *** bituminous blend consisting in 70%of bitumen and 30%of powder lignin(by weight)was made in laboratory through the use of a high shear stirring mixer,and a reference plain bitumen characterized by a similar consistency(i.e.,same penetration grade)was used as ***,an extensive investigation on chemical and rheological properties of the bio-binder is *** transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),saturates,aromatics,resins and asphaltenes(SARA),bending beam rheometer(BBR),frequency sweep tests and multiple stress creep recovery tests(MSCR)with a dynamic shear rheometer(DSR)were ***,unaged,short-and long-term aging conditions were *** indicated that powder lignin dominates the rheological behavior of the bio-binder and,from chemical analysis,it seems that it partially acts as a filler and partially as a *** would result in improved performances at both low and high temperatures,leading to a wider temperature range of performance grade(PG).Moreover,despite a stiffening effect is recognized,lignin also offers an antioxidant potentiality,reducing the aging susceptibility of the investigated bio-binder.
