Alien Enc.unters in Liu c.xin's The Three-Body Trilogy and arthur c.clarke's c.ildhood's End

c.inese sc.enc. fic.ion (sf) writer Liu c.xin (b. 1963) has c.nstantly been dubbed as c.ina’s arthur c. clarke (1917-2008) ever sinc. he won the 2015 Hugo Award for best novel. He himself humbly states on several oc.asions that everything he writes is just c.umsy imitations of arthur c. clarke. One similarity between Liu and clarke is the obsession with the imagination of the alien enc.unter. But their imagination of the alien other has one major differenc.: While the aliens in clarke’s sf are mostly benevolent, those in Liu’s are mostly malevolent. This essay c.mpares the differenc.s between their alien enc.unter sf, foc.sing on c.ildhood’s End and The Three-Body Trilogy (Santi sanbuqu). I will espec.ally look at how the narrative point of view and the c.nsequenc. of the alien enc.unter differ in the two texts. And I argue that c.ildhood’s End is an unapologetic.justific.tion of (British) c.lonialism (dressed up as the benevolent Overlords) and propaganda for c.lonial logic., whereas Liu’s trilogy is a representation of the c.lonial enc.unter story written from the point of view of the (semi-) c.lonized, for whom this experienc. is c.arac.erized by dehumanization. The Three-Body Trilogy c.uld be c.nsidered as resulted from the revival of the national humiliation disc.urse in the 1990s.
