A modified PRP conjugate gradient method is proposed in this paper based on the modified secant equation. The main properties of the new method are described as follows:(i) the parameter β has not only gradient value information but also function value information;(ii) β ≥0,k;(iii) the search direction generated by the presented method possesses both the sufficient descent and trust region properties without carrying out any line search. Under some suitable assumptions, we establish the global convergence of the new method with armijo line search. Finally, some preliminary numerical results show that the proposed method is promising and effective.

Shamanskii-Like Levenberg-Marquardt Method with a New line search for Systems of Nonlinear Equations

To save the calculations of Jacobian,a multi-step Levenberg-Marquardt method named Shamanskii-like LM method for systems of nonlinear equations was proposed by Fa.Its convergence properties have been proved by using a trust region technique under the local error bound condition.However,the authors wonder whether the similar convergence properties are still true with standard line searches since the direction may not be a descent direction.For this purpose,the authors present a new nonmonotone m-th order armijo type line search to guarantee the global convergence.Under the same condition as trust region case,the convergence rate also has been shown to be m+1 by using this line search technique.Numerical experiments show the new algorithm can save much running time for the large scale problems,so it is efficient and promising.

Yu and Guan proposed a sufficient descent PRP conjugate gradient method(DPRP method) and established the global convergence based on some conditions.But no convergence results were obtained for nonconvex objective functions with standard armijo line search or Wolfe line search.In this paper,a cautious DPRP method is proposed.It is showed that the proposed method is globally convergent if the armijo line search or the Wolfe line search is used.The numerical results show that the proposed method is efficient.

Conjugate gradient methods depend on the search directions, with different methods arising from different choices for the scalar β. The conjugate gradient mehtods using β are the well-known Fletcher-Reeves methods. Numerical experiences show that the FR method with the Wolfe line search and the armijo line search often produces an ascent search direction. In this case, we search along its opposite direction-d. Thus we obtain the dependent generalized FR method, abbreviated to the DGFR method. This paper presents conditions which the ratio of β to β satisfying, which ensure the global convergence of the DGFR method with the Wolfe line search and the generalized armijo line search. Besides, to a great extent, the conditions weaken the assumption in general literatures that the gradient is Lipschitz continuous.
