Impacts of central-Pacific El Niño and physical drivers on eastern Pacific bigeye tuna

Bigeye tuna Thunnus obesus is an important migratory species that forages deeply,and El Niño events highly influence its distribution in the eastern Pacific Ocean.While sea surface temperature is widely recognized as the main factor affecting bigeye tuna(BET)distribution during El Niño events,the roles of different types of El Niño and subsurface oceanic signals,such as ocean heat content and mixed layer depth,remain unclear.We conducted A spatial-temporal analysis to investigate the relationship among BET distribution,El Niño events,and the underlying oceanic signals to address this knowledge gap.We used monthly purse seine fisheries data of BET in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean(ETPO)from 1994 to 2012 and extracted the central-Pacific El Niño(CPEN)indices based on Niño 3 and Niño 4indexes.Furthermore,we employed Explainable Artificial Intelligence(XAI)models to identify the main patterns and feature importance of the six environmental variables and used information flow analysis to determine the causality between the selected factors and BET distribution.Finally,we analyzed argo datasets to calculate the vertical,horizontal,and zonal mean temperature differences during CPEN and normal years to clarify the oceanic thermodynamic structure differences between the two types of years.Our findings reveal that BET distribution during the CPEN years is mainly driven by advection feedback of subsurface warmer thermal signals and vertically warmer habitats in the CPEN domain area,especially in high-yield fishing areas.The high frequency of CPEN events will likely lead to the westward shift of fisheries centers.

海洋温度数据在全球海洋观测和气候研究中发挥着关键作用,质量控制对于确保这些数据的可靠性十分关键,然而,目前在大数据集上的异常数据召回率尚不理想。本文基于argo温度数据,提出一种基于规则集和多层感知机(rule set and multilayer perceptron, RS-MLP)的质量控制方法。首先对13种机器学习模型进行对比分析,从中筛选出最优机器学习模型,然后设计了由6种基于规则的质量控制检查模块组成的规则集,最后集成规则集和最优机器学习模型构建出RSMLP方法,并以南海区域的argo数据为例评估方法性能。研究结果表明:RS-MLP在351746条温度数据的测试集中真阳性率(true positive rate, TPR)、真阴性率(true negative rate, TNR)和ROC曲线下面积(area under curve, AUC)依次能达到93%、96%和95%,并在不同深度层次上的异常数据召回率比较稳定,具有优秀的质量控制性能。

声速变化是影响水下精密定位的重要因素，受制于现有的声速剖面获取手段，目前的声速代表性误差严重影响着水下定位精度。针对现实中难以实现一定海域内时间空间的连续观测，本文以地转海洋学实时观测阵（Array for Real-time Geostrophic Oceanography, argo）温盐度数据作为真值，利用美国国家海洋和大气管理局（National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA）提供的2018世界海洋地图集（The World Ocean Atlas 2018, WOA18）中的历史温盐数据，基于添加注意力机制的长短期记忆神经网络模型（Long Short Term Memory, LSTM），来构建局部海域声速场。结果表明，该方法可用于反演局部海域500～1 500 m深度范围内较为精准的声速剖面，且添加注意力机制的LSTM神经网络模型反演的声速在太平洋局部海域均方根误差为0.34 m/s，在大西洋局部海域声速均方根误差为0.78 m/s，相比传统反向传播神经网络（Back Propagation Neural Network, BPNN）和添加了遗传因子的反向传播神经网络（Back Propagation Neural Network+Genetic Algorithm, BPNN+GA）在精度上得到了改善。

Evaluating the contribution of satellite measurements to the reconstruction of three-dimensional ocean temperature fields in combination with argo profiles

Assimilation systems absorb both satellite measurements and argo observations.This assimilation is essential to diagnose and evaluate the contribution from each type of data to the reconstructed analysis,allowing for better configuration of assimilation parameters.To achieve this,two comparative reconstruction schemes were designed under the optimal interpolation framework.Using a static scheme,an in situ-only field of ocean temperature was derived by correcting climatology with only argo profiles.Through a dynamic scheme,a synthetic field was first derived from only satellite sea surface height and sea surface temperature measurements through vertical projection,and then a combined field was reconstructed by correcting the synthetic field with in situ profiles.For both schemes,a diagnostic iterative method was performed to optimize the background and observation error covariance statics.The root mean square difference(RMSD)of the in situ-only field,synthetic field and combined field were analyzed toward assimilated observations and independent observations,respectively.The rationale behind the distribution of RMSD was discussed using the following diagnostics:(1)The synthetic field has a smaller RMSD within the global mixed layer and extratropical deep waters,as in the Northwest Pacific Ocean;this is controlled by the explained variance of the vertical surface-underwater regression that reflects the ocean upper mixing and interior baroclinicity.(2)The in situ-only field has a smaller RMSD in the tropical upper layer and at midlatitudes;this is determined by the actual noise-to-signal ratio of ocean temperature.(3)The satellite observations make a more significant contribution to the analysis toward independent observations in the extratropics;this is determined by both the geographical feature of the synthetic field RMSD(smaller at depth in the extratropics)and that of the covariance correlation scales(smaller in the extratropics).

Consistency analysis of GRACE and GRACE-FO data in the study of global mean sea level change

Global mean sea level(GMSL) change is one of the important indicators of global climate change and is a crucial scientific issue of continuing interest. As satellite altimeter data, the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment(GRACE) and argo continue to be updated, especially with the release of GRACE Follow-On(GRACE-FO) data, making it necessary to combine these latest data to estimate sea level change. Determinations on whether the GRACE and GRACE-FO observation systems provide unbiased global observation data have not been effectively evaluated. Therefore, this research mainly investigated the consistency of GRACE and GRACE-FO observation data in studying GMSL change. By comparing the sum of the GMSL calculated by the two gravity satellites and argo data with the GMSL calculated by satellite altimeters, the discrepancy between GRACE-FO + argo and satellite altimeter data is about 7.9 ± 2.3 mm, which is likely derived from the inconsistency between GRACE and GRACE-FO data.

Validation of the multi-satellite merged sea surface salinity in the South China Sea

Sea surface salinity(SSS)is an essential variable of ocean dynamics and climate research.The Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity(SMOS),Aquarius,and Soil Moisture Active Passive(SMAP)satellite missions all provide SSS measurements.The European Space Agency(ESA)Climate Change Initiative Sea Surface Salinity(CCI-SSS)project merged these three satellite SSS data to produce CCI L4SSS products.We validated the accuracy of the four satellite products(CCI,SMOS,Aquarius,and SMAP)using in-situ gridded data and argo floats in the South China Sea(SCS).Compared with in-situ gridded data,it shows that the CCI achieved the best performance(RMSD:0.365)on monthly time scales.The RMSD of SMOS,Aquarius,and SMAP(SMOS:0.389;Aquarius:0.409;SMAP:0.391)are close,and the SMOS takes a slight advantage in contrast with Aquarius and SMAP.Large discrepancies can be found near the coastline and in the shelf seas.Meanwhile,CCI with lower RMSD(0.295)perform better than single satellite data(SMOS:0.517;SMAP:0.297)on weekly time scales compared with argo floats.Overall,the merged CCI have the smallest RMSD among the four satellite products in the SCS on both weekly time scales and monthly time scales,which illustrates the improved accuracy of merged CCI compared with the individual satellite data.

溶解氧是探究海洋内部各种生物地球化学循环过程以及评估海洋健康的重要参数。目前,基于argo剖面浮标的观测方式已经成为获取海洋溶解氧信息的主要来源之一,但是这种方式获取到的海洋溶解氧资料在空间上是离散分布的。如何利用空间插值方法将离散的argo溶解氧剖面观测数据构建成连续的空间网格数据是当前研究关注的热点,本文提出了一种面向argo溶解氧剖面观测数据的空间-质量特征的迭代插值方法(ASOSQIM)。针对观测样点空间上分布离散、不规则的特点,ASOSQIM首先对溶解氧观测数据进行空间初始化来构建初始背景场,然后对argo溶解氧剖面观测样点进行空间异质性分区,采用空间-质量定权的方式赋予不同质量标示数据相应的权重系数来解决参与插值的数据量及其精度问题,最后利用迭代插值的思想并集成溶解氧空间分区特征和质量标识,实现了基于argo剖面浮标观测的溶解氧浓度空间插值。利用交叉验证法和WOA18资料对ASOSQIM进行方法验证和对比分析,结果表明:(1)ASOSQIM的插值精度相比于其他空间插值方法具有大幅度的提升,与2022年同期argo浮标溶解氧观测结果进行对比,验证了该方法的优越性和可行性;(2)利用ASOSQIM得到的溶解氧浓度插值结果与WOA18溶解氧资料具有高度一致性,溶解氧浓度绝对误差在20μmol/kg范围内的区域占比达到85%以上,表明利用该方法得到的插值结果具有可靠性。

Meso-scale circulation at the intermediate-depth east of Mindanao observed by argo profiling floats

The meso-scale circulation at the intermediate depth east of Mindanao is studied using argo profiling floats observations. The trajectories and the parking-depth velocities of argo floats show that the intermediate-depth circulation east of Mindanao contains significant meso-scale features that are highly variable both in space and in time. Both cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies at the intermediate depth (1000–2000 m) are indicated by the trajectories east of Mindanao. The mean tangential velocities of these eddies are about 10 cm/s at 2000 m and over 20 cm/s at 1000 m, which indicates that the geostrophic calculation may contain large errors due to the vigorous eddy activity at the reference levels. The analyses also suggest that these eddies might play an important role in mass and vorticity balances of the intermediate-depth circulation east of Mindanao.

Intraseasonal Oscillation in Global Ocean Temperature Inferred from argo

The intraseasonal oscillation （ISO; 14 97-day ocean was studied based on argo observations periods） of temperature in the upper 2000 m of the global from 20052008. It is shown that near the surface the ISO existed mainly in a band east of 60°E, between 10°S and 10°N, and the region around the Antarctic Circumpolar Current （ACC）. At other levels analyzed, the ISOs also existed in the regions of the Kuroshio, the Gulf Stream, the Indonesian throughflow, the Somalia current, and the subtropical eountercurrent （STCC） of the North Pacific. The intraseasonal signals can be seen even at depths of about 2000 m in some regions of the global ocean. The largest amplitude of ISO appeared at the thermocline of the equatorial Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Ocean, with maximum standard deviation （STD） exceeding 1.2°C. The ACC, the Kuroshio, and the Gulf Stream regions all exhibited large STD for all levels analyzed. Especially at 1000 m, the largest STD appeared in the south and southeast of South Africa a part of the ACC, with a maximum value that reached 0.5°C. The ratios of the intraseasonal temperature variance to the total variance at 1000 m and at the equator indicated that, in a considerable part of the global deep ocean, the ISO was dominant in the variations of temperature, since such a ratio exceeded even 50% there. A case study also confirmed the existence of the ISO in the deep ocean. These results provide useful information for the design of field observations in the global ocean. Analysis and discussion are also given for the mechanism of the ISO.

Geostrophic meridional transport in tropical Northwest Pacific based on argo profiles

Absolute geostrophic currents in the North Pacific Ocean were calculated using P-vector method from newly gridded argo profiling float data collected during 2004-2009. The meridional volume transport of geostrophic currents differed significantly from the classical Sverdrup balance, with differences of 10×106 -20×106 m3 /s in the interior tropical Northwest Pacific Ocean. Analyses showed that errors of wind stress estimation could not explain all of the differences. The largest differences were found in the areas immediately north and south of the bifurcation latitude of the North Equatorial Current west of the dateline, and in the recirculation area of the Kuroshio and its extension, where nonlinear eddy activities were robust. Comparison of the geostrophic meridional transport and the wind-driven Sverdrup meridional transport in a high-resolution OFES simulation showed that nonlinear effects of the ocean circulation were the most likely reason for the differences. It is therefore suggested that the linear, steady wind-driven dynamics of the Sverdrup theory cannot completely explain the meridional transport of the interior circulation of the tropical Northwest Pacific Ocean.
