For mid-latitude cities, higher summer temperatures due to climate change are a cause for concern because they aggravate the urban heat island phenomenon and reduce thermal comfort inside buildings. By acquiring the appropriate knowledge and skills, architects and urban designers can become key actors in adaptation to climate change. Two workshops bringing together architects and urban designers provided evidence of deficiencies in this area. We hypothesize that a design support tool （DST） focused on the issue of adaptation of mid- latitude cities to rising summer temperatures could help improve knowledge and skills of professionals in the field. The first section presents the results taken from a review and classification of DSTs, which highlight the toots＇ features that are LikeLy to reach this goal Toots of the ＂hybrid＂ category seem most appropriate. To verify this, seven DSTs were selected and tested by fourteen students enrolled in a graduate-level architecture design studio. The second section presents the results from this test, including an analysis of the final projects, a web- based questionnaire and two focus groups. The relevance of hybrid approaches is established, but the results bring into question the capacity of a single DST to meet the individual and multiple needs of professionals.

Factors Inhibiting the Use of Bamboo in Building Construction in Ghana: Perceptions of Construction Professionals

There is a growing concern of the integration of bamboo as a material into the building construction industry even though its potential is underscored. Certain factors serve as barriers to the use of bamboo in building construction. This study employed a questionnaire survey which sought to investigate the perceptions of 84 architects and 100 Senior Managers of small and medium scale Building construction firms on the factors that influence the use of bamboo in building construction. Relative Importance Index and Chi-squared tests were performed to identify the significant factors that influence the use of bamboo in building construction. The results showed that the building contractors considered nonspecification of bamboo for building projects by architects, inadequate bamboo processing companies in Ghana and insufficient cooperation from government to be the key factors which influence the use of bamboo for building construction. The results further showed that the architects considered lack of knowledge in bamboo detailing, limited knowledge of bamboo and lack of expertise to use it, and inadequate bamboo processing companies to be the key influential factors inhibiting the use of bamboo in building construction. The results are of value to the construction industry as it identifies significant factors which influence the usage of bamboo in building construction. Promotion of bamboo usage in building construction should be given the needed publicity to create the awareness of its potential as a building material.

The issue of climatism is a matter of concern today, given the growth of technology and the subject of globalization, which is defined and explained in many respects. The rapid advancement of technology makes communication and navigation readily available. This factor causes the challenge for human societies to discover more recent developments that in turn raise the issues of how can the climatism be compatible with the creation of an architectural work, taking into account that the countries’ conventional boundaries lose their importance. And, the factors affect climatism, in other words, the way that climatism, human societies with diverse cultures, and the surrounding environment interact with each other, is raised. And, in general, the way that an architecture work to interact with its environment is discussed. In this sense, the traditional and indigenous architecture, and the fluidity of the region in the architectural framework also address the characteristics of the physical and architectural features of each region from the architectural arena, introducing effective approaches to architecture and urban planning (objective and tactical approaches), using the rational-logical approach to regional review. Then, the discussion of regionalism and regional influences in the physical fabric of each traditional architectural structure’s region is presented, with the special look of traditional architecture that is expressed in consistency between the building and the nature, and to explain the arguments to the examples and characteristics.
