Characteristic Mode Analysis: Application to Electromagnetic Radiation, Scattering, and Coupling Problems

Recent years, the theory of characteristic modes has emerged as a powerful analysis technique in antenna engineering, providing a means to reveal the natural resonant properties of objects and providing a variety of modal parameters. Based on these modal parameters, advanced techniques have been developed based on the theory of characteristic modes to address a wide range of electromagnetic radiation, scattering, and coupling problems. This review provides an overview of some of the latest characteristic mode-based techniques for wideband design, circular polarization, radiation pattern control, scattering control, and mutual coupling control. In addition, future perspectives are discussed, highlighting the potential of characteristic modes for addressing even more complex electromagnetics problems.

A Tightly Coupled Dipole Array with Diverse Element Reflection Phases for RCS Reduction

This paper proposes a novel low scattering tightly coupled dipole array(TCDA), aiming to reduce the radar cross section(RCS) of phased antenna arrays under a certain oblique incident wave. First, we build three types of antenna elements that exhibit similar radiation characteristics but diverse reflection phase differences based on the proposed theoretical analysis. The required reflection phase difference is achieved by using different dielectric superstrates for each antenna element. Then, by arranging the three types of subarrays next to each other, a low scattering TCDA(8 × 9) is designed. Meanwhile, a reference antenna array with a single type of antenna element is also constructed. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed RCS reduction technique, simulated and measured results of the reference and proposed antenna array are compared. Both antenna arrays operate over the 6–18 GHz frequency band and can scan up to ±45° in the E-/H-planes. However, the proposed antenna array achieves a significant monostatic RCS reduction over 8–12 GHz, with a maximum reduction value of 7.55 d B. It indicates that this diverse element reflection phase technique is a good candidate for wideband RCS reduction.

Compensation Method： New Perspectives

The compensation method aiming to reduce the irradiation on the user＇s body and to form a weak field area （a dark spot） in an antenna near region is considered. The results of the method development for the use in a narrow frequencies range are given. They show that under realistic conditions the compensation method allows reducing the irradiation power by a factor of 3-4 and more. The pattern changes are predictable and small, if the points of antennas placement are selected correctly. The dark spot necessity near the transmitter is not limited by mobile communication. A man often uses a low-power radio station, which is placed nearby in a vehicle, and it is necessary to protect from irradiation not only user but also other passengers. In the paper, it is shown that broadband field compensation can be achieved in various structures where the needed anti-phase fields are created either by identical antennas or by radiators located at equal distance from the compensation point, or by flat reflectors.
