Phylogenetic relationship and phenotypic comparison of Psychrobacter species isolated from polar oceans

To investigate the phylogenetic relationship and biogeography of bacterioplankton in polar oceans, four Psychrobacter strains, BSw10170, BSw20352, BSw20370, and BSw20461, isolated from seawater of the Beijing Sea, the Chukchi Sea, and the Prydz Bay, were characterized by 16S rDNA sequencing and physiological and biochemical testing. Results demonstrated that close relationships existed between the Arctic and antarctic.strains with sequence similarities higher than 97 %. These four Psychrobacter strains not only showed almost identical phenotypic characteristics among them, but also shared a lot of similarities with those related Psychrobacter species, indicating that psychrotolerance and halotolerance of Psychrobacter strains may be among the reasons for their bipolar, even global distribution in marine environments at the genus level.

The polar day and night are special phenomena that occur within the antarctic.and Arctic *** is no such phenomenon at Great Wall Station(62°13′S, 58°58′ W). There are 55 and 58 days at the Zhongshan Station (ZSS, 69°22′S, 76°22′ E) for the polar day and the polar night respectively. The observational experiment of radiation and thermal regime were carried out at the latter station from February 1990 to January *** the present note the characteristics of the surface radiation are analysed from the data obtained in the experiment.

Compared with traditional chemical analysis methods,reflectance spectroscopy has the advantages of speed,minimal or no sample preparation,non-destruction,and low *** present study explored the application of the reflectance spectroscopy within near ultraviolet-visible-near infrared region to predict bio-element compositions in the ornithogenic sediments from the maritime antarctic.A total of 106 samples were taken from four ornithogenic sediment cores on the Ardley Island of antarctic.,68 samples were used for building calibration equation,and 38 for prediction of nine bio-elements including P,Ca,Cu,Zn,Se, Sr,Ba,F and *** multivariate statistical analysis techniques,including stepwise multiple linear regression（Stepwise-MLR）,principal component regression（PCR） and partial least squares regression（PLS） were used to develop mathematical relationships between the spectral data and the chemical reference *** results showed that the regression models constructed by PCR and PLS models have no significant differences,and obviously supervisor to *** correlations between spectra-predicted and chemically analyzed concentrations of nine bio-elements are statistically significant,and the concentration-versusdepth profiles predicted from reflectance spectra using PLS calibration model are consistent with those from actual chemical *** results demonstrated the feasibility of using reflectance spectroscopy to infer bio-element concentrations in the ornithogenic sediments,and thus it is suggested that the reflectance spectroscopy could provide a rapid and valuable technique to indirectly identify whether the sediments were influenced by penguin droppings in the antarctic.region.

The distributions and changes of dissolved organic carbon in the Prydz Bay and out open sea were investigated during CHINARE-15 (the 15th Chinese National antarctic.Research Expedition). The results showed that the content of DOC was higher in the Prydz Bay and outer open sea compared to those typical of surface oceanic levels (70- 80 μM), average content of DOC in the surface water was 102.32 μM, the range was 68.23- 125.92 μM. The vertical distribution of DOC in the water column was similar to many ocean sites, that is to say, the content of upper water is higher than deep water, a subsurface maximum persisted between 25- 50 m. The DOC pool in the Prydz Bay were consisted with labile, semi-labile and refractory pools, in which refractory pools was mainly part. The concentration of refractory DOC was 92.34 and 76.89 μM in Prydz Bay and outer open sea, and account 77% and 82% for total DOC, respectively.
