Climatological Characteristics of the Moisture Budget and Their anomalies over the Joining Area of Asia and the Indian-Pacific Ocean

The climatological characteristics of the moisture budget over the joining area of Asia and the IndianPacific Ocean （AIPO） and its adjacent regions as well as their anomalies have been estimated in this study. The main results are as follows. In the winter, the northeasterly moisture transport covers the extensive areas at the lower latitudes of the AIPO. The westerly and northerly moisture transport is the major source and the South Indian Ocean （SIO） is the moisture sink. In the summer, influenced by the southwesterly monsoonal wind, the crossequatorial southwesterly moisture transport across Somali originating from the SIO is transported through the Arabian Sea （AS）, the Bay of Bengal （BOB）, and the South China Sea （SCS） to eastern China. The AIPO is controlled by the southwesterly moisture transport. The net moisture influx over the AIPO has obvious interannual and interdecadal variations. From the mid- or late 1970s, the influxes over the SIO, the AS, the northern part of the western North Pacific （NWNP）, and North China （NC） as well as South China （SC） begin to decrease abruptly, while those over Northeast China （NEC） and the Yangtze River-Huaihe River basins （YHRB） have increased remarkably. As a whole, the net moisture influxes over the BOB and the southern part of the western North Pacific （SWNP） in the recent 50 years take on a linear increasing trend. However, the transition timing for these two regions is different with the former being at the mid- or late 1980s and the latter occurring earlier, approximately at the early stage of the 1970s. The anomalous moisture source associated with the precipitation anomalies is different from the normal conditions of the summer precipitation. Sea surface temperature anomalies in the South China Sea during mature phase of ENSO

Based on the 18-year （1993-2010） National Centers for Environmental Prediction optimum interpolation sea surface temperature （SST） and simple ocean data assimilation datasets, this study investigated the patterns of the SST anomalies （SSTAs） that occurred in the South China Sea （SCS） during the mature phase of the E1 Nifio/Southem Oscillation. The most dominant characteristic was that of the out- of-phase variation between southwestern and northeastern parts of the SCS, which was influenced primarily by the net surface heat flux and by horizontal thermal advection. The negative SSTA in the northeastern SCS was caused mainly by the loss of heat to the atmosphere and because of the cold-water advection from the western Pacific through the Luzon Strait during E1 Nifio episodes. Conversely, it was found that the anomalous large-scale atmospheric circulation and weakened western boundary current during E1 Nifio episodes led to the development of the positive SSTA in the southwestern SCS.

Application of Geoid anomalies to the Tectonic Research in the East Asian Continental Margin

In this paper, we calculated multi-scale residual geoid anomalies with the method of geoid separation processing, according to EGM2008 ultra-high order gravity field model, remove-restore technique and Stokes integral. The East Asian continental margin was selected as the study area. The residual geoid anomalies have been calculated by programming. On the basis of residual geoid anomalies at various orders, the interlayer geoid anomalies at different depths were calculated to depict the spatial distribution characteristics of the residual geoid. Finally, we conducted a detailed geophysical interpretation for the study area according to the geoid anomalies in combination with other geophysical datasets. Four conclusions can be outlined as follows: 1) it is impracticable that geoid anomalies are used in the interpretation of the shallow objects due to the influence of the terrain; 2) the anomalies of residual geoid can reflect the intensity of small-scale mantle convection in the asthenosphere; 3) the interlayer geoid anomalies can reflect the magmatic activities associated with the mantle convection and mantle plume in different scales; 4) the study of the geoid may provide an approach for the research of the subduction zone, mantle convection and mantle plume.

Seismic response to natural gas anomalies in crystalline rocks

According to the geological and seismic reflection data of the Chinese Continental Scientific Drilling (CCSD) main-hole (MH), and the anomalies of CH4, CO2, and He are correlated to the three-component seismic reflectors, especially in horizontal component profiles. However, the seismic response is dif-ficult to be explained as the porosity of crystalline rocks is only about 1% in well section where the gas anomalies occur. Seismic velocity measurement of the MH cores indicated that compared with wa-ter-saturated rock samples, seismic velocity (especially the S-wave) could be distinctly decreased by gas contained in tiny cracks despite of the low porosity, and then notable seismic response could be induced in gas-filled crystalline rocks. It could be predicated that if the porosity of certain rocks in the middle crust rose due to water-rock interaction and had natural gas filled, then there would be more probability for natural gas in top of the mid-crust to fill in the crystalline rocks with increased porosity. In such case, based on the decrease of Swave velocity in crystalline rocks, seismic method could be applied in the future to explore natural gas reservoirs in the middle crust.

Early Paleozoic whole-rock Ce anomalies and secular eustatic changes in the Upper Yangtze region

The 65 whole-rock REE samples studied come from the classic sections of Early Cambrian to Early Silurian in the Yichang area, Hubei Province. REE concentrations tested on ICP-AES are normalized to the North American Shale Composite (NASC), and Ce anomaly values are calculated based on log[3Cen(2Lan+Ndn)]. With the whole-rock Ce anomaly used as a quantitative index of sea-level changes, 5 prominent eustatic circles are recognized, and a good corresponding relationship is observed between the black shale episodes and the transgressive events. On account of the global distributions of coeval black shales and the specified paleogeographic background of South China, a genetic hypothesis based on the model of O2-minimum zone expansion is suggested for the Early Paleozoic multi-episode black shales in South China.

The analysis of the Earth’s rotation rate time series,from January 1,2012 till December 31,2017,is performed using two different time series analysis methods,both based on signal decomposition joined with forecasting *** in the time series are detected making the comparison between the raw signal and the forecasting one at the 95% confidence *** two methods show consistent results and the best is selected according to the evaluation of the prediction *** methods highlight correlations between detected anomalies in the Earth’s rotation rate time series and the world’s earthquakes occurrence with magnitude≥7 and/or number of events≥150 per day,within a time interval of ±10 days from each earthquake *** study brings an innovation in the analysis of such time series and helps to better understand the extent of this relationship.

We have examined the water level data from 16 wells in Sichuan province,China,recorded before the Wenchuan Ms8.0 earthquake occurred in *** found that the data of 5 among these wells exhibit possible precursory anomalies,which are respectively named the Chuan No.08 well in Deyang,Chuan *** well in Pujiang,Chuan No.13 well in Luzhou,Chuan No.22 well in Qionglai and *** time durations,these anomalies are of long-,intermediate-and short-term signals which are primarily distributed on the northeast(NE)trending Longmenshan fault zone as well as the parallel Huayingshan fault *** seems that the variations of the well levels on the Huayingshan fault zone imply compression while those on the Longmenshan fault zone reflect *** anomalies occurred first in the areas outside the epicenter region of the Wenchuan Ms8.0 earthquake,then migrated to the seismogenic fault *** they migrated from southwest to northeast in agreement with the rupture process of the main shock.
