Geochemical record for the depositional condition and petroleum potential of the Late Cretaceous Mamu Formation in the western flank of anambra basin, Nigeria

Carbonaceous shale exposures of the Late Cretaceous Mamu Formation along Ifon-Uzebba road in western arm(Benin Flank) of anambra basin, southwestern Nigeria, were analyzed for bulk organic geochemical, molecular biological and poly-aromatic hydrocarbon(PAH) compositions to investigate the organic matter source, paleo-depositional condition, thermal maturity and petroleum potential of the unit. The bulk organic geochemistry was determined using Leco and Rock-Eval pyrolysis analyses while the biomarkers and PAH compositions were investigated using gas chromatography-mass spectrometer(GC-MS).The bulk organic geochemical parameters of the shale samples showed total organic carbon(TOC)(1.11-6.03 wt%), S2(0.49-11.73 mg HC/g Rock), HI(38-242 mg HC/g TOC) and Tmax(425-435 C) indicating good to excellent hydrocarbon source-rock. Typical HI-Tmax diagram revealed the shale samples mostly in the gas-prone Type Ⅲ kerogen region with few gas and oil-prone Type Ⅱ-Ⅲ kerogen. The investigated biomarkers(n-alkane, isoprenoid, terpane, hopane, sterane) and PAH(alkylnaphthalene, methylphenanthrene and dibenzothiophene) indicated that the carbonaceous shales contain mix contributions of terrestrial and marine organic matter inputs that were deposited in a deltaic to shallow marine settings and preserved under relatively anoxic to suboxic *** maturity parameters computed from Rock-Eval pyrolysis, biomarkers(hopane, sterane) and PAH(alkylnaphthalene, alkylphenanthrene, alkyldibenzothiophene) suggested that these carbonaceous shales in anambra basin have entered an early-mature stage for hydrocarbon generation. This is also supported by fluoranthene/pyrene(0.27-1.12), fluoranthene/(fluoranthene + pyrene)(0.21-0.53) ratios and calculated vitrinite reflectance values(0.49-0.63% Ro) indicative that these shales have mostly reached early oil window maturity, thereby having low hydrocarbon source potential.

Sedimentological and foraminiferal paleoecological studies were carried out for the Oligocene-Miocene Ogwashi-Asaba Formation of the anambra basin at the Issele-Uku area in southern Nigeria,to reconstruct *** pattern of rock successions and textural characteristics suggest the prevalence of fluvio-deltaic setting during the formation of lignites and clastic rocks of Ogwashi-Asaba *** benthic foraminiferal species such as Ammotium sp.,Textularia sp.,Gavelinella sp.,Milliamina sp.,Reophax sp.,Bolivina sp.,Eponides sp.,Pseudobolivina *** Lenticulina *** the shale units whereas the planktonic forms are *** these species have very low population and diversity in the shales,which could be due to the presence of harsh conditions such as low oxygen level and scarcity of food,leading to poor *** assessments of benthic foraminifera's habitat suggest middle-to-inner neritic marine environment for the *** results suggest fluvial environment for the sandstone and deltaic for the *** Ogwashi-Asaba Formation in Issele-Uku area of anambra basin,southern Nigeria,therefore,have records of shallow marine,and fluvio-deltaic paleoenvironments.

Biostratigraphy investigation of Nsukka Formation was carried out by subjecting weLt cutting samples obtained from Nzam-1 weLL to patynotogicat studies with the view towards determining the relative geologic age and pataeoenvironment of deposition of the sediments. SampLes were treated in the Laboratory through digestion with hydrofluoric acid, sieving with 5 μm, oxidation with Nitric acid and mounting of the sLides into sections with DPX mountant. A fairLy high abundance and diversity of miospores were recovered, white the interval （847-1372 m） contains distinctive and diagnostic patynomorphs which are stratigraphicatty important. A Spinizonocolpites baculatus assemblage zone was established based on the basal occurrence of S. baculatus, Spinizonocolpites echinatus, Constructipollenites ineffectus, Periretisyncolpites sp. Periretisyncolpites giganteus, Monocolpites sp 1, Foveotriletes margaritae, Syncolporites marginatus, and Longapertites marginatus. The upper part of the intervat is marked by association of Anacolosidites luidonisis （at top）, Mauritiidites crassibaculatus, Retistephanocolpites williamsi, Proteacidites dehaani, Echitriporites trianguliformis, Proxapertites cursus, Retidiporites magdalenensis, S. baculatus, Retitricolpites gigeonetti, F. margaritae and Araucariadtes sp. The Nsukka Formation is dated as Late Maastrichtian based on the cooccurrence of recovered index fossits. Importantly, Cretaceous-Tertiary （K/T） boundary is marked by high fossil content in the Maastrichtian sediments compared to paucity in patynomorph that characterises the overtying Pateocene facies. Pataeoenvironment of the anatyzed section varies atternatety from marginaL marine to continental setting based on the presence of land-derived miospores and dinoflagettates.

Integration of sedimentologic and sequence stratigraphic interpretations of the Nkporo Group has provided the basis for a basin-wide framework for prediction of potential source,seal and reservoir rocks in the anambra basin,*** and biostratigraphic data show that the Nkporo Group in the anambra basin contains three main facies associations(fluvio deltaic facies,estuarine central basin/shallow shelf facies and estuarine channel fill facies) that determine the reservoir containers,flow units and *** units are arranged to form two stratigraphic sequences represented by the Nkporo Shale-Owelli Sandstone and Owelli Sandstone-Enugu Shale successions,*** transgressive systems tract in each sequence comprises coarse grained fluvio deltaic sandstone and an overlying open marine black carbonaceous mud *** highstand systems tracts comprise delta front deposits with average porosity,permeability and net-to-gross values estimated in the ranges of 30%,3000 md and 0.9,*** fluvio deltaic and delta front facies which are encased in organically rich estuarine central basin/shallow shelf mud rocks are likely the potential *** capacity is enhanced by the presence of several N-S trending normal faults,and other microstructures related to the post-Santonian tensional regime in the *** new information presented in this paper on potential seal,source and reservoir lithofacies within the Nkporo Group should serve as a useful contribution to the geological modelling of reservoirs within the Late Cretaceous-Paleocene succession in the anambra basin.

Petrographic Evaluation of the Ranks and Technological Applications of Some Coal Deposits in the anambra basin and Middle Benue Trough of Nigeria

The coal resources of Nigeria occur mainly within the Benue Trough which includes the anambra basin. In the Lower Benue Trough/anambra basin, sub-bituminous coals occur within the Maastrichtian Mamu Formation in Enugu （Enugu State）, Owukpa （Benue State）, Okaba （Kogi State） and Ogboyaga （Kogi State）. High-volatile bituminous coals occur within the Turonian-Coniacian Awgu Formation in the Middle Benue Trough around Obi/Lafia （Nasarawa State） with outcrop exposures at Jangwa-Shankodi. Organic petrographic results show that huminites dominate the maceral composition of the anambra basin coals and have vitrinite reflectance values that range from 0.40% to 0.63 Ro%. In the coals from the Middle Benue Trough, vitrinite macerals predominate the petrographic composition and Ro values range from 0.81% to 1.25%. Based on the petrographic composition and rank evaluation, the sub-bituminous coals in Enugu, Owukpa, Okaba and Ogboyaga （anambra basin） are optimum for combustion and electric power generation and sub-optimum for liquefaction, while the high-volatile bituminous coals in the Obi/Lafia area （Middle Benue Trough）, apart from being optimum for liquefaction, are the most suitable as raw material for coke making （carbonization） in steel manufacture and as exploration targets for coal-bed methane gas and liquid hydrocarbons.
