This paper proposes two definitions of analogy from the aspects of epistemology andmethodology respectively, i. e. ?-analogy based on a common model and A_c-analogy basedon analogy correspondence. Their relations are discussed. An analysis method for findinganalogy correspondence has been derived from the definition of A_c-analogy.

The coupling effects among lateral mode,longitudinal mode and torsional mode of a launch vehicle cannot be taken into account in traditional dynamic analysis using lateral beam model and longitudinal spring-mass model individually.To deal with the problem,propellant analogy methods based on beam model are proposed and coupled mass-matrix of liquid propellant is constructed through additional mass in the present study.Then an integrated model of launch vehicle for free vibration analysis is established,by which research on the interactions between longitudinal and lateral modes,longitudinal and torsional modes of the launch vehicle can be implemented.Numerical examples for tandem tanks validate the present method and its necessity.

Improving the resolution of the shock is one of the most important subjects in computational aerodynamics. In this paper the behaviour of the solutions near the shock is discussed and the reason of the oscillation production is investigated heuristically. According to the differential approximation of the difference scheme the so-called diffusion analogy equation and the diffusion analogy coefficient are defined. Four methods for improving the resolution of the shock are presented using the concept of diffusion analogy.

From the viewpoint of dynamics, it is convenient to regard the field to be predicted as a small disturbance superposed on the historical analogous field, and thus the statistical technique can be used in combining with the dynamics. Along this line, a coupled atmosphere-earth surface analogy-dynamical model is formulated and applied to making eight seasonal predictions. All of the predictions were initiated from January and have been made from February to August of 1981 to 1988. The experiments of eight-year predictions show certain skill in seasonal prediction, and the skill scores of prediction are greater than those of single statistical analogy forecast.

Abiotic stresses such as heat and frost limit plant growth and productivity.Image-based field phenotyping methods allow quantifying not only plant growth but also plant senescence.Winter crops show senescence caused by cold spells,visible as declines in leaf area.We accurately quantified such declines by monitoring changes in canopy cover based on time-resolved high-resolution imagery in the field.Thirty-six winter wheat genotypes were measured in multiple years.A concept termed"frost damage index"(FDI)was developed that,in analogy to growing degree days,summarizes frost events in a cumulative way.The measured sensitivity of genotypes to the FDI correlated with visual scorings commonly used in breeding to assess winter hardiness.The FDI concept could be adapted to other factors such as drought or heat stress.While commonly not considered in plant growth modeling,integrating such degradation processes may be key to improving the prediction of plant performance for future climate scenarios.

Topological insulators have taken the condensed matter physics scenery by storm and captivated the interest among scientists and materials engineers alike.Surprisingly,this arena which was initially established and profoundly studied in electronic systems and crystals,has sparked a drive among classical physicists to pursue a wave-based analogy for sound,light and vibrations.In the latest efforts combining valley-contrasting topological sound with non-Hermitian ingredients,B.Hu et al.[Nature 597,655(2021)]employed thermoacoustic coupling in sonic lattices whose elementary building blocks are coated with electrically biased carbon nanotube films.In this contribution,we take a theoretical and numerical route towards understanding the complex acoustic interplay between geometry and added acoustic gain as inspired by the aforesaid publication.Besides complex bulk and edge states predictions and computations of mode-split resonances using whispering gallery configurations,we also predict an acoustic amplitude saturation in dependence on the activated coated elements.We foresee that our computational advances may assist future efforts in exploring thermoacoustic topological properties.

The study aims to analyse the architectural typology and determine the period of construction for the preserved traditional mosques of the Quzzat Quarter in the Old City of Herat(known as the Pearl of Khorasan).Twenty-nine mosques are located in the area,three of which are modern and 26 are traditional.Twelve out of the 26 traditional mosques still exist and have preserved their traditional landscape.Using analogy to analyse water cisterns and mosques,we determine when each mosque was developed and establish the period of development for each structure.Further analyses are carried out on the edifces’architectural details.Architectural analyses and mosque typologies suggest that fve buildings were built before the Timurid dynasty;two were built during the Timurid dynasty(1370−1507 CE);and one was built after the Timurid dynasty.Two mosques incorporating elements from diferent periods are counted as exceptions,and the remaining two are considered to have been built during transitional periods.
