Malnutrition refers to the deficiency, imbalances, or excesses in a person’s intake of energy or nutrients [1]. Khan defines anaemia as below level of Haemoglobin in red blood shown by a lower number of functioning red blood cells [2]. The crisis in the North West and South West Regions of Cameroon has led to several negative effects on children’s living conditions. There has been an increase in malnutrition and anaemia in the South West Region and Kumba in particular. The main objective of this study was “to examine the prevalence of malnutrition and anaemia in children ≤ 5 years of age in some conflict-hit areas of Meme Division”. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in 2023 from March to June. We recruited 200 children ≤ 5 years into the study from three hospitals. The regional hospital annex in Kumba, Presbyterian General Hospital Kumba and the Ntam Hospital in Kumba. Socio-demographic factors were assessed using questionnaire, nutritional status was assessed by the use anthropometric measurements and an auto haematology analyser was used to determine anaemia. The overall prevalence of malnutrition in the study area was 40.5%. The prevalence of malnutrition varied significantly (P anaemia in the study area was 70.5%. The prevalence of anaemia was not significantly associated with the study sites. The prevalence of Malnutrition and anaemia in children ≤ 5 years of age is very high in the Kumba municipalities. This could be attributed to the ongoing crisis which has caused a lot of social migrations from rural areas to Urban areas which are safer.

A novel approach based on metabolomics coupled with network pharmacology to explain the effect mechanisms of Danggui Buxue Tang in anaemia

Danggui Buxue Tang(DBT) is a famous Chinese medicinal decoction. Mechanism of DBT action is wide ranging and unclear. Exploring new ways of treatment with DBT is useful. Sprague–Dawley(SD) rats were randomly divided into 3 groups including control(NC, Saline), the DBT(at a dose of 8.10 g?kg–1), and blood deficiency(BD)(Cyclophosphamide(APH)-and Cyclophosphamide(CTX)-induced anaemia). A metabolomics approach using Liquid Chromatography-Quadrupole-Time-of-Flight/Mass Spectrometry(LC/Q-TOFMS) was developed to perform the plasma metabolic profiling analysis and differential metabolites were screened according to the multivariate statistical analysis comparing the NC and BD groups, and the hub metabolites were outliers with high scores of the centrality indices. anaemia disease-related protein target and compound of DBT databases were constructed. The TCMSP, Chem Mapper and STITCH databases were used to predict the protein targets of DBT. Using the Cytoscape 3.2.1 to establish a phytochemical component–target protein interaction network and establish a component, protein and hub metabolite protein–protein interaction(PPI) network and merging the three PPI networks basing on BisoGenet. The gene enrichment analysis was used to analyse the relationship between proteins based on the relevant genetic similarity by ClueGO. The results shown DBT effectively treated anaemia in vivo. 11 metabolic pathways are involved in the therapeutic effect of DBT in vivo; S-adenosyl-L-methionine, glycine, L-cysteine, arachidonic acid(AA) and phosphatidylcholine(PC) were screened as hub metabolites in APH-and CTX-induced anaemia. A total of 288 targets were identified as major candidates for anaemia progression. The gene-set enrichment analysis revealed that the targets are involved in iron ion binding, haemopoiesis, reactive oxygen species production, inflammation and apoptosis. anaemia in Critically Ill COVID-19 Patients: A Cohort Study

anaemia is common in critically ill patients and has been shown to be a predictor of mortality in general Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU). Patients with Corona Virus Infectious Disease 2019 (CV-19) have also been reported to be anaemic, more profound in those admitted to ITU. We report our experience in the management of anaemic CV-19 patients admitted to ITU between 1st March and 1st June 2020. Demographic and clinical variables collected included age, sex, BMI, Charlson comorbidity index (CCI), Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II score, haemoglobin concentration, blood transfusion, and mortality. 105 patients were admitted to the ITU with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 disease requiring invasive mechanical ventilation and 73 patients with complete dataset were included in the study. Results: 36 patients (49%) were anaemic on admission, with 56 (77%) patients developing anaemia at some stage in the first 7 days of ITU stay. anaemia at admission to ITU, a higher CCI and a higher APACHE II score were all independently associated with a blood transfusion (OR 12.5, 95% CI: 1.48 - 106, p = 0.02), (OR 1.95, 95% CI: 1.08 - 3.52, p = 0.03) and (OR 4.8, 95% CI: 1.48 - 15.6, p = 0.009) respectively. Univariable analysis showed that an increasing age (OR 2.15, 95% CI: 1.18 - 3.91, p = 0.01) and a higher APACHE II score (OR 1.60, 95% CI 1.01 - 2.54, p = 0.04) were significantly associated with mortality. There was also some evidence of an association with mortality for CCI, although the results for this variable were only of borderline statistical significance. Neither haemoglobin concentration (OR 1.09, 95% CI: 0.83 - 1.43, p = 0.55) or anaemia (OR 1.08, 95% CI: 0.41 - 2.85, p = 0.87) at admission to ITU was significantly associated with mortality. 13 patients received blood transfusions, with a mean (SD) pretransfusion Hb of 75.2 (12.02). These numbers were too small to identify any association between receiving blood transfusion and mortality.

Coinfection with malaria and intestinal parasites, and its association with anaemia in children in Cameroon

Background:The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of coinfection with malaria and intestinal parasites,as well as to determine its association with anaemia in children aged 10 years and below in Muyuka,Cameroon.Materials and methods:This was a cross-sectional study.Participants were febrile children who were admitted to the Muyuka district hospital between April and October 2012.Blood and stool samples were collected from those participants who gave consent to take part in the study.Haemoglobin concentration(Hb)and complete blood count(CBC)were performed using an automated haematology analyser(Mindray®,BC-2800).Giemsa-stained blood film was examined to detect malaria parasites,while the formol-ether concentration technique was used to detect intestinal parasitic infections(IPIs).The Pearson’s chi-square,Student’s T-test and correlation analysis were all performed as part of the statistical analyses.Results:Four hundred and eleven(411)children successfully took part in this study.The prevalence of malaria,IPIs,malaria and IPI coinfection,and anaemia observed were 98.5%,11.9%,11.9%and 44.8%,respectively.anaemia and IPIs were significantly associated with age;anaemia was more prevalent in children under five years of age(p=0.000),whereas IPIs were more prevalent in children aged between five and 10 years(p=0.006).The parasite species isolated included Ascaris lumbricoides(36[73.5%]),Entamoeba histolytica/dispar(9[18.4%])and hookworm(4[8.2%]).The mean Hb observed was 10.64 g/dl(±1.82).A significant negative correlation was observed between malaria parasite density and Hb.There was no significant difference in the prevalence of anaemia among children infected with malaria,IPIs,or malaria and IPI coinfection,or among non-infected children.Similarly,the mean Hb did not differ among infected and non-infected children.Conclusion:This study showed that malaria and IPIs still constitute a major public health problem in the study area despite a lack of any significant association between these infections a

Background:anaemia and malaria are common and life-threatening diseases among preschool-aged children in many tropical and subtropical areas,and Malawi is no exception.Accordingly,this study aimed to examine the association of referral clinical malaria with anemia(hemoglobin[Hb]anaemia while 24.4%had a referral to the hospital due to malaria.After adjustments for known confounders,PSC with a history of referral clinical malaria had increased odds of being anaemic(adjusted odds ratio[aOR]=4.63,95%confidence interval[Cf]:2.90-7.40),Panaemia in PSC Thus,elimination of malariacausing parasites from the PSCs blood should be rapid and complete in order to prevent the progression of uncomplicated malaria to a chronic infection that can lead to the development of malaria-related anaemia.
