A new genus and three new species of miniaturized microhylid frogs from Indochina(amphibia: Anura:Microhylidae: Asterophryinae)

We report on the discovery of a new genus of microhylid subfamily Asterophryinae from northern and eastern Indochina, containing three new species.Vietnamophryne Gen. nov. are secretive miniaturized frogs(SVL<21 mm) with a mostly semi-fossorial lifestyle. To assess phylogenetic relationships, we studied 12 S rRNA – 16 S rRNA mt DNA fragments with a final alignment of 2 591 bp for 53 microhylid species. Morphological and osteological characters were analyzed using micro-CT scanning and used to describe the new genus. Results of phylogenetic analyses assigned the new genus into the mainly Australasian subfamily Asterophryinae as a sister taxon to the genus Siamophryne from southern Indochina. The three specimens collected from Gia Lai Province in central Vietnam, Cao Bang Province in northern Vietnam, and Chiang Rai Province in northern Thailand proved to be separate species, different both in morphology and genetics(genetic divergence 3.1%≤P≤5.1%). Our work provides further evidence for the "out of Indo-Eurasia"scenario for Asterophryinae, indicating that the initial cladogenesis and differentiation of this group of frogs occurred in the Indochina Peninsula. To date, each of the three new species of Vietnamophryne Gen. nov. is known only from a single specimen; thus,their distribution, life history, and conservation status require further study.

Individual age and population age composition are the major concerns of ecologists,evolutionary biologists and conservation biologists.In amphibians,skeletochronology-counting the number of lines of arrested growth deposited in the bone tissue,is the dominant method to determine actual age of an individual.Since 1970s,age data of the ectothermic taxa have been accumulated and increasingly used in comparative studies.Here we make a global assessment for the availability of the data,based on a collection of 369 published papers.For a specific species,more males than females were sampled.Among the extant 8146 amphibian species,only 266(3.3%)have been skeletochronologically investigated.Of these studied species,2(0.9%of 214)belong to caecilians,56(7.6%of 740)salamanders and 208(2.9%of 7192)anurans.A complete paucity of data was seen in 80%,50%,and 54%of families in the corresponding orders.More temperate species than tropical species were sampled,while the proportion of Palearctic species studied was higher than that in the other 5 biogeographical realms.Species inhabiting semi-aquatic niche were more likely to be studied than fossorial or plant dwellers.Age information of multiple populations(2-48)was available for species with a broad distribution,accounts for 61%of salamander and 43%of anuran species studied.Because these gaps in demographic knowledge can limit our understanding of questions ranging from life history evolution,population dynamics to conservation,we encourage herpetologists to pay more efforts on filling them.

Dear Editor,The genus Liuixalus Li,Che,Bain,Zhao,and Zhang,2008 is a group of small-bodied Asian rhacophorid tree frogs and currently includes six species distributed in southern China and northern Vietnam(amphibiaChina,2022;Pham et al.,2018;Qin et al.,2015).The type species of Liuixalus,L.romeri(Smith,1953),was originally assigned to the genus Chiromantis by Smith(1953)based on morphology.However,using molecular phylogenetic analysis,Li et al.(2008)found that C.romeri formed its own clade with an unidentified tree frog species,which was a sister group of the remaining taxa of the subfamily Rhacophorinae.

Genetic characterization of species using phylogeographic approaches represents a basic reference to understand their evolutionary history as well as to identify conservation priorities to protect areas of particular interest regarding evolutionary potential.Even in well-studied regions such information is lacking for the majority of species,including many endemic species with reduced distribution ranges.We investigate the phylogeographic pattern of the Iberian frog Rana iberica,an endemic amphibian restricted to Central and North-Western Iberian Peninsula.Using mitochondrial sequences,we reconstruct the phylogeographic history of the species to test the effect of Quaternary climate changes on the evolutionary diversification of lineages,that is,the differentiation of mitochondrial lineages and the formation of genetic diversity melting pots,and integrate phylogeographic evidence for future conservation planning.Our results indicate the existence of 3 main mitochondrial lineages differentiated during the Upper Pleistocene.Both historical demographic analyses and climatic niche modeling show a strong effect of glacial climate changes,suggesting recurrent range contractions and expansions.Under such circumstances,differentiation took place most likely by isolation in allopatric interglacial refugia.Secondary lineage admixture in northern Portugal generated a broad mixed zone with highest nucleotide diversity.Given its particular evolutionary potential,its reduced distribution and eventual threats under current climate change scenario,conservation priorities should focus on the isolated lineage from Sierra de Guadalupe.

The genus Minervarya is among the most widely distributed,commonly occurring,and taxonomically confusing groups of dicroglossid frogs in India.Recent studies have provided evidence that this genus contains complexes of morphologically conserved but genetically divergent taxa—some widely distributed across South and Southeast Asia,and many particularly restricted to the Western Ghats region of the Indian Peninsula—posing several challenges in resolving long-standing taxonomic confusions.Here,we present a systematic review of minervaryan species found in Peninsular India,based on extensive DNA barcoding with nearly 400 samples from the entire range of the genus,including 277 new samples and topotypic material for most available names from the study area,combined with detailed morphological studies.As a result,we recognise 18 species in Peninsular India,including a new species described herein as Minervarya pentali sp.nov.Due to the comprehensive nature of the study,including comparisons with all available types,certain long-standing taxonomic uncertainties on the status of ten previously known taxa are resolved Rana(Tomopterna)parambikulamana Rao,1937(=Minervarya parambikulamana),Rana(Hylorana)sauriceps Rao,1937(=Minervarya sauriceps),and Fejervarya kudremukhensis Kuramoto,Joshy,Kurabayashi,and Sumida,2008"2007"(=Minervarya kudremukhensis),are considered as junior subjective synonyms of Rana(Rana)limnocharis mysorensis Rao,1922(=Minervarya mysorensis);Nyctibatrachus sanctipdustris var.modestus Rao,1920(=Minervarya modesta)is proposed to be a synonym of Rana limnocharis syhadrensis Annandale,1919(=Minervarya syhadrensis);while Rana murthii Pillai,1979(=Minervarya murthii)and Fejervarya mudduraja Kuramoto,Joshy,Kurabayashi,and Sumida,2008"2007"(=Minervarya mudduraja)are considered as junior subjective synonyms of Rana nilagirica Jerdon,1853(=Minervarya nilagirica).At the same time,Rana brevipalmata Peters,1871(=Minervarya brevipalmata),previously known only from its original description and the type specimen,is recog

We present the first herpetological checklist for the Kulen Promtep Wildlife Sanctuary in northern Cambodia, with records of 22 species of amphibians and 33 species of reptiles belonging to 44 genera in 22 families. The checklist includes three species （Ingerophrynus macrotis, Micryletta inornata, Scincella melanosticta） which in Cambodia were formerly only known to occur in the Cardamom Mountains in the southwest of the country. Our findings highlight the importance of countrywide herpetological baseline surveys in lowland habitats.

Damage to <i>Salamandra infraimmaculata</i>Populations by Human Activity in Creating Water Pits Is a Death Trap in Semi-Arid Habitats

The different breeding sites of Salamandra infraimmaculata on the southern border of its distribution were examined and mapped in order to estimate the damage caused by water holes that could represent death traps for salamanders in xeric habitats. Among the various types of breeding sites (springs, streams, water holes, winter pools and reservoirs), the larvae of salamanders were detected in high numbers in springs and streams (503) and water holes (48), and in relatively low numbers in winter pools. Two water holes were examined in detail to estimate the damage caused to S. infraimmaculata where breeding places are limited. During the winter, both males and females enter a water hole for breeding. The percentage of males in and around the water hole was 42% and that of females 29%. After the salamanders’ oviposition in the water, they try to return to terrestrial habitats, but are unable to do so and lose weight and die. The body mass index (BMI) of salamanders decreases from winter (December) after they move to the water hole to spring (April), when they are found in the water hole. The estimation of potential damage is about 300 mature salamanders annually.
