Effect of Glass Powder on Chloride Ion Transport and alkali-aggregate reaction Expansion of Lightweight aggregate Concrete

The effects of glass powder on the strength development, chloride permeability and potential alkali-aggregate reaction expansion of lightweight aggregate concrete were investigated. Ground blast furnace slag, coal fly ash and silica fume were used as reference materials. The re- placement of cement with 25% glass powder slightly decreases the strengthes at ？ and 28 d, but shows no effect on 90 d＇s. Silica fume is very effective in improving both the strength and chloride penetration resistance, while ground glass powder is much more effective than blast furnace slag and fly ash in improving chloride penetration resistance of the concrete. When expanded shale or clay is used as coarse aggregate, the concrete containing glass powder does not exhibit deleterious expansion even if alkali-reactive sand is used as fine aggregate of the concrete.

＜正＞ Since 1988, RILEM has been seeking to establish universally applicable test methods for assessing the alkali-reactivity potential of aggregates. Technical committee TC 106 （1988-2000） published two expansion tests （AAR-2 ＆ AAR-3）, following international trials, and started to develop two further procedures, for petrographic examination （AAR-1） and an ultra-accelerated concrete method （AAR-4）, together with an integrated assessment scheme （AAR-0）. Successor committee TC 191-ARP （formed in 2000）, comprising members from all parts of the world, has now finalised and published procedures AAR-0 and AAR-1 and has carried out international trials on AAR-4 and a method for assessing carbonate aggregates （AAR-5）. It also has a widened scope to seek international consistency in approaches to diagnosis （AAR-6） and specification （AAR-7） and in the assessment of alkali release from aggregates （AAR-8）. This paper reviews the overall progress of TC 191-ARP;three other papers presented at the conference describe the detailed progress on particular aspects of the work.. The authors are respectively Secretary and Chairman of TC 191-ARP （and previously of TC 106） and the leader of the TC 191-ARP team developing AAR-4.

A Blended Cement Containing Blast Furnace Slag and Phosphorous Slag

Blended cement containing blast furnace slag (BFS) and phosphorous slag( PS) is a new kind of cement. The total content of blended materials could increase if two additives were used. Using the same admixtures , the properties of the blended cement with 70% additives could reach the standard of 525-grade slag cement according to GB. The strength of cement with 80% additives could reach the standard of 425-grade slag cement. The tests of strength, pore structure, hydration products, inhibiting alkali-aggregate reaction, resistance to sulfate corrosion of BFS-PSC were performed.

＜正＞ The diorite-plagioclase granite will be used as coarse aggregate, and the flecky granite will be used as fine aggregate for the darn concrete of Three-gorge project. Because of the strained quartz in the granite, undulance extinction appears in the granite, furthermore, in the stress concentration area, quartz will form different kinds of dislocation, so the alkali activity reaction will be very slow and will last a long time. In this paper we study it from geologic environment, lithofacies, physical and chemical aspects, and also use several methods for compare. The experiment result shows that the granite is mainly composed of feldspar, quartz, biotite and few hornblende or chlorite, etc. The granite aggregate is appraised as non-activity aggregate by means of petrography analysis method, chemical method, mortar bar length method, small bar ultra-accelerated method, mortar bar ultra-accelerated method and the prism experiment of concrete. In the condition of low content alkali, there will be no harmful expansion, but in the condition of high content of alkali, the expansion rate of concrete will still increase even after several years. In order to ensure the safety of the dam, it is very important to control the alkali amount of cement strictly.
