Potential impacts of climate change on dengue fever distribution using RCP scenarios in China

This study projected dengue distribution risk map using representative concentration pathways(RCP2.6,RCP4.5,RCP6.0,RCP8.5)in China in 2020s,2030s,2050s and 2100s.Based on the biological characteristics of aedes albopictus and the dengue epidemic process,dengue transmission biological model was developed to project the risk epidemic areas.Observational temperature data in 1981-2016 at 740 stations and grid data of 0.5°×0.5°(15°-55.5°N,70°-140.5E)under selected RCPs in 2020s,2030s,2050s and 2100s were used.Relative to 142 counties and 168 million people living in the projected high risk area of dengue in the climate condition of 1981-2016,dengue high risk areas in China would expand under same RCP scenarios in the 21st century with time past except RCP2.6 with a turning down point in 2050s.Especially under RCP8.5 which global mean temperature would increase by 4.9 C till 2100s,the high risk area and population for dengue transmission would expand additional 34 counties(20 million)in 2020s,114 counties(60 million)in 2030s,208 counties(160 million)in 2050 and 456 counties(490 million)in 2100s respectively than those of 1981-2016.For RCP8.5 in 2100s,the population and expanded high risk areas would increase 4.2-fold and 2.9-fold than the 1981-2016 mean.The newly added high risk areas should prepare for controlling and preventing dengue in different period according to projected dengue risk map.

Objective:To determine the larvicidal and pupicidal activites of Solanum trilobatum(S. trilobatum) leaf extracts against aedes aegypti(Ae.aegypti),Culex quinquefasciatus(Cx. quinquefasciatus) and Anopheles stephensi(An.stephensi).Methods:The larvicidal and pupucidal was determined at five different concentrations of 50,100,150,200 and 250 ppm.Percentage of larval mortality was assessed after 48 h.Results:Methanol extracts of S.trilobatum was found to be more susceptible against the larvae of Ae.aegypti.Cx.quinquefasciatus and An.stephensi at 250 ppm with a LC_(50) value of 125.43,127.77 and 116.64 ppm respectively.Leaf methanol extracts of S.trilobatum also exhibited pupicidal and adult emergence properties.Conclusions:These results suggested that the leaf extracts of S.Irilobalum showed potential to be used as an ideal ecofriendly approach for the control of the Ae.Aegypti,Cx.quinquefasciatus and An.stephensi.

Zika virus from a Southeast Asian perspective

Phylogenic evidence suggests that the strain of Zika virus causing an unprecedented outbreak of disease in the Americas had its origin in Southeast Asia,where reports of isolated cases of Zika virus infection have occurred since 2010,Why there has been no large outbreak of Zika infection in Southeast Asia remains unclear and whether such an outbreak will occur in the future is a question of significant concern,This review looks at Zika virus from a Southeast Asian perspective and highlights some of the possible scenarios with regards to Zika virus in this part of the world as well as highlighting some of the research questions that need to be urgently addressed.

Zika virus infections:an overview of current scenario

Zika virus(ZIKV) was discovered more than half a century ago,recently it has gained unprecedented attention by the global health community.Until 2007,only 14 cases of human ZIKV infections were reported around the globe,while during the current outbreak,estimated cases mounted to approximately 1.5 million in Brazil alone,the virus was disseminated to wider South-American territories and travel-associated ZIKV infections were reported in USA,Europe and recently in China.ZIKV infections remain asymptomatic in approximately 80% of the individuals,and no anti-viral treatments were recommended.Yet,neurological complications associated with the infections,such as infant microcephaly and Guillain-Barré syndrome are major cause of the concern.Although,based on small numbers of cases,existing evidence strongly supports an exclusive link of viral infection and observed neurological complications.However,much work remains to assign exact numbers of complications caused by ZIKV.Regarding its structural attributes ZIKV shows remarkable resemblance with dengue virus and West-Nile virus.Despite,genomes of different ZIKV strains have already been decoded;role of the viral components in infection process and particularly pathogenesis of the disease remain widely unclear.In vulnerable areas,most viable strategy to ensure public health safety is vector control and enhanced public awareness about the transmission of the disease.

Lethal effect of Streptomyces citreofluorescens against larvae of malaria,filaria and dengue vectors

Objective:To investigate lethal effect of culture filtrates of Streptomyces citreofluorescens （S.citreofluorescens） against Anopheles stephensi（An.stephensi）,Culex quinquefasciatus（Cx. quinquefasciatus）,and aedes aegypti（Ae.aegypti） larvae vectors for malaria,filarial and dengue. Methods:The culture filtrates obtained from S.cilreofluorescens 2528 was grown in Potato Dextrose Broth（PDB）,filtrated and used for the bioassay after a growth of 15 days.Results:The results demonstrated that the An.stephensi shows mortalities with LC50,LG40 values of first instar 46.8μL/mL,79.5μL/mL,second instar 79.0μL/mL,95.6μL/mL,third instar 79.0μL/mL,136.9μL/mL,and fourth instar 122.6μL/mL,174.5μL/mL Whereas,The Cx.quinquefasciatus were found effective on first instar 40.0μL/mL,138.03μL/mL,second instar 80.0μL/ml,181.97μL/ mL,third instar 100.0μL/mL,309.2μL/mL,and fourth instar 60.0μL/ml,169.82μL/mL.The Ae.aegypti were successfully achieved susceptible with higher concentrations in comparisons of An.stephensi and Cx.quinquefasciatus larvae.These outcomes of the investigations have compared with the Chitinase of Streptomyces griseus（S.griseus） C6137 that shows 90%-95% mortality.Conclusions:These new findings significantly permitted that the culture filtrates of S. citreofluorescens can be used as bacterial larvicides.This is an environmentally safe approach to control the vectors of malaria,dengue and filariasis of tropical areas.

Chikungunya infection:A potential re-emerging global threat

Infectious diseases are indeed a lifelong threat to everyone irrespective of age, sex, lifestyle and socio-economic status. The infectious diseases have persisted among the prominent causes of death globally. Recently, re-emergence of Chikungunya viral infection harmed many in Asian and African countries. Chikungunya was considered as a major threat in developing and underdeveloped countries; the recent epidemiological outbreak of Chikungunya in La Reunion urges the global researchers to develop effective vaccine against this viral disease. In this review, Chikungunya, pathogenesis and epidemiology were briefly described.

The global spread of Zika virus:is public and media concern justified in regions currently unaffected?

Background:Zika virus,an aedes mosquito-borne flavivirus,is fast becoming a worldwide public health concern following its suspected association with over 4000 recent cases of microcephaly among newborn infants in Brazil.Discussion:Prior to its emergence in Latin America in 2015–2016,Zika was known to exist at a relatively low prevalence in parts of Africa,Asia and the Pacific islands.An extension of its apparent global dispersion may be enabled by climate conditions suitable to support the population growth of A.aegypti and A.albopictus mosquitoes over an expanding geographical range.In addition,increased globalisation continues to pose a risk for the spread of infection.Further,suspicions of alternative modes of virus transmission(sexual and vertical),if proven,provide a platform for outbreaks in mosquito non-endemic regions as well.Since a vaccine or anti-viral therapy is not yet available,current means of disease prevention involve protection from mosquito bites,excluding pregnant females from travelling to Zika-endemic territories,and practicing safe sex in those countries.Importantly,in countries where Zika is reported as endemic,caution is advised in planning to conceive a baby until such time as the apparent association between infection with the virus and microcephaly is either confirmed or refuted.The question arises as to what advice is appropriate to give in more economically developed countries distant to the current epidemic and in which Zika has not yet been reported.Summary:Despite understandable concern among the general public that has been fuelled by the media,in regions where Zika is not present,such as North America,Europe and Australia,at this time any outbreak(initiated by an infected traveler returning from an endemic area)would very probably be contained locally.Since aedes spp.has very limited spatial dispersal,overlapping high population densities of mosquitoes and humans would be needed to sustain a focus of infection.However,as A.aegypti is distinctly anthropophilic,future control stra

Zika virus is the last arbovirosis arriving at the American continent and it is able to produce severe complications due to its neurotropism, such as microcephaly and it is also associated with Guillain-Barre syndrome(GBS). Presence of aedes aegypti in many regions of Peru makes it easier to spread and it could be present in population, not being detected because there is a lack of rapid diagnosis methods. It is important to make a quick, effective and combined response to this new threat.

Zika threatens to become a huge worldwide pandemic

The aedes aegypti mosquito which transmits Zika virus(as well as dengue, chikungunya and yellow fever) represents a high risk for global transmission. This virus comes from Africa, the Zika forest in Uganda, where it was discovered in 1947 in a rhesus monkey. In May 2015, the first local cases were recorded in Brazil, surpassing 1.5 million cases in December of the same year. By March 2016, local transmission of Zika was recognized in 34 countries. Its clinical condition is similar to dengue febrile illness, although milder.The final geographical distribution area is constantly expanding. Recently, it has been associated with cases of Guillain-Barre′ syndrome in Brazil, Colombia, El Salvador,Venezuela and Suriname. Microcephaly was documented in Brazil. This article discusses some factors that contributed to the spread of Zika virus in South America. Climate change associated with the events of the phenomenon of "El Ni?o" is also analyzed. The biggest concern is how quickly Zika is spreading around the world and that it could be far more dangerous than previously thought. Zika virus infection, by its explosive potential,has every chance of becoming a global pandemic.

Surveillance of Chikungunya virus activity in some North-eastern states of India

Objective: To detect the prevalence pattern of Chikungunya virus in three states of Northeast India. Methods: A total of 1 510 samples were collected from different private and government hospitals of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya. Serum was tested for the presence of IgM antibodies against Chikungunya virus followed by RT-PCR for amplification of Chikungunya E1 gene region using specific primers. Results: Overall, 11.83%(172/1 454) clinical samples were positive by MAC-ELISA and/or RT-PCR assay. Asymptomatic infection was seen in 17.86%. Males were more affected than females and age group 16-30 years was mostly affected. Fever(100.00%) was the primary symptom followed by headache(72.03%) and arthralgia(41.53%). Only 118 Chikungunya positive cases could be traced, of which 25.42% complained about sequelae of infection. In entomological investigation, aedes aegypti was more predominant(92.10%) than aedes albopictus(7.90%). No mosquito pools could be incriminated for Chikungunya virus. Conclusions: In this study, Chikungunya was observed to be prevalent in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya. Though Chikungunya is a selflimiting infection, increasing morbidity by CHIKV infection is affecting social and economic status of individual. Thus, a community empowerment to effectively control mosquito population by employing different mosquito control measures along with personal protection is mandatory to tackle future outbreak of the disease.
