Capillary blood flow in patients with dysmenorrhea treated with acupuncture

OBJECTIVE: To observe capillary blood flow at acupoints during acupuncture treatment of primary dysmenorrhea and gain new insights into its analgesic mechanism. METHODS: Patients with primary dysmenorrhea were enrolled and randomly assigned to a treatment or control group. Subjects' symptoms were differentiated into variousTraditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) syndromes and treated for 10 sessions with puncturing acupuncture or self-pressing right-hand Hegu(LI 4), adding other acupoints based on syndrome. Laser speckle was used to compare the change in the vasomotor amplitude and perfusion of the capillaries in Hegu(LI 4) before and during the treatment. Each subject was required to finish the period pain symptoms observation form, verbal rating scales, numerical rating scale, pain rating index, face rating scale, Zung self-rating depression scale, Zung self-rating anxiety scale, and numerical rating scale before and after treatments. RESULTS: After 10 sessions, the symptom scores, pain index(PI), and visual analog scale(VAS) decreased significantly in treatment group. The volume of blood flow in Hegu(LI 4) declined slightly. No significant evidence supported that needling caused capillary contraction, but the capillary vasomotor amplitude at Hegu(LI 4) increased remarkably. CONCLUSION: Acupuncture can increase the capillary blood flow, thus promoting the flow of Qi and blood in terms of TCM theory, which facilitates pain relief.

Observation on the Curative Effect of Acupuncture on Child Tourette＇s Syndrome

To investigate the efficacy of earth-reinforcing and wood-reducing acupuncture tbr child Tourette＇s syndrome. Methods： Forty-five children with Yourette＇s syndrome were randomly allocated, according to a random number table, into an acupuncture group （23 cases） and a Western medicine group （22 cases）. Points Zhongwan （CV 12） and Siguan were selected in co-operation with acupuncture of other routine points in the acupuncture group. Haloperidol was orally administered for routine treatment in the Western medicine group. Results： The cure rate was 65.2% in the acupuncture group and 31.8% in the Western medicine group. There was a significant difference in cure rate between the two groups （P〈0.05）. Conclusion： Earth-reinforcing and wood-reducing acupuncture has an exact curative effect on child Tourette＇s syndrome.

Forty-five Cases with Epigastric Pain Treated with Puncturing Hegu(LI 4)

Epigastric pain, also known as stomach pain, is presented with fi＇equently recurrent pain in the upper abdomen or stomach area, which is mainly caused by exogenous pathogen, improper diet or internal injuries due to seven emotions. All 45 cases with epigastric pain caused by various fitctors were treated with mainly needling Hegu （LI 4） between November 2010 and November 2012, and the report is given as follows.

Observation on Clinical Effect of Superficial Needling for Intractable Humeral Epicondylitis

Objective： To observe the clinical effect of superficial needling for ntractable humeral epicondylitis. Methods： Sixty cases in conformity with the inclusion criteria of intractable humeral epicondylitis were randomly divided into two groups, 30 cases in each. The cases in the superficial needling group were treated by superficial needling plus moxibustion, while those in the electro- acupuncture （EA） group were treated by EA plus moxibustion. After treatment, the improvement of the clinical symptoms and signs were compared between the two groups. Results： The curative rate was 80.0% and the total effective rate was 96.7% in the superficial needling group. The curative rate was 60.0% and the total effective rate was 83.3% in the EA group. The differences in the clinical effects between the two groups were statistically significant （P〈0.05）. Conclusion： The therapeutic effect of superficial needling plus moxibustion for intractable humeral epicondylitis is better than that of EA plus moxibustion.

Acupuncture for facial nucleus paralysis

Case of acupuncture for facial nucleus paralysis was reported. Compared with peripheral facial paralysis, facial nucleus paralysis is more complex with a high-level and high-degree injury, leading to a low cured rate in clinic. This case was cured successfully, which might be related to less bleeding amount from patients＇ lesion and more complete absorption of blood stasis, as well as accuracy of clinical syndrome differentiation, positioning and appropriateness of treatment method and acupoint selection of acupuncture in the mid to late stage.
