Historically,"big pharma"did most central nervous system drug discovery R&D ***,in modern times their"management reductionism"resulted in disappointing pipelines and pharma resided to(late)development,regulatory approval,and marketing(Thong,2015).This had significant consequences for financing and executing research,resulting in a larger role for funding by governments and patient-organizations and a shift of research to academia(Mazzucato,2013).

As the number of published papers being retracted is increasing dramatically and is higher than ever before, the phenomenon of retraction has aroused widespread concern in the research community all over the world. It has been mentioned that large-scale retracted papers from China appeared in journals of major publishers(Tang, 2019). After we classified these retracted papers published between 2011 and 2021 based on their retraction reasons(1), we see that 8,594 cases are retracted because of academic misconduct. The “academic misconduct” problem has become a common issue faced by academic communities worldwide, including China.

Scholarships are a reflection of academic achievement for college *** traditional scholarship assignment is strictly based on final grades and cannot recognize students whose performance trend improves or declines during the *** paper develops the Trajectory Mining on Clustering for Scholarship Assignment and academic Warning(TMS)approach to identify the factors that affect the academic achievement of college students and to provide decision support to help low-performing students attain better ***,we first conduct feature engineering to generate a set of features to characterize the lifestyles patterns,learning patterns,and Internet usage patterns of *** then apply the objective and subjective combined weighted k-means(Wosk-means)algorithm to perform clustering analysis to identify the characteristics of different student *** the difficulty in obtaining the real global positioning system(GPS)records of students,we apply manually generated spatiotemporal trajectories data to quantify the direction of trajectory deviation with the assistance of the PrefixSpan algorithm to identify low-performing *** experimental results show that the silhouette coefficient and Calinski-Harabasz index of the Wosk-means algorithm are both approximately 1.5 times to that of the best baseline algorithm,and the sum of the squared error of the Wosk-means algorithm is only the half of the best baseline algorithm.

academic literature retrieval concerns about the selection of papers that are most likely to match a user's information needs. Most of the retrieval systems are limited to list-output models, in which the retrieval results are isolated from each other. In this paper, we aim to uncover the relationships between the retrieval results and propose a method to build structural retrieval results for academic literature, which we call a paper evolution graph(PEG).The PEG describes the evolution of diverse aspects of input queries through several evolution chains of papers. By using the author, citation, and content information, PEGs can uncover various underlying relationships among the papers and present the evolution of articles from multiple viewpoints. Our system supports three types of input queries: keyword query, single-paper query, and two-paper query. The construction of a PEG consists mainly of three steps. First, the papers are soft-clustered into communities via metagraph factorization, during which the topic distribution of each paper is obtained. Second, topically cohesive evolution chains are extracted from the communities that are relevant to the query. Each chain focuses on one aspect of the query. Finally, the extracted chains are combined to generate a PEG, which fully covers all the topics of the query. Experimental results on a real-world dataset demonstrate that the proposed method can construct meaningful PEGs.

A Dilemma of Language: “Natural Disasters” in academic Literature

For decades sections of the academic community have been emphasizing that disasters are not ***, politicians, the media, various international organizations—and, more surprisingly, many established researchers working in disaster studies—are still widely using the expression 'natural disaster.' We systematically analyzed the usage of the expression 'natural disaster' by disaster studies researchers in 589 articles in six key academic journals representative of disaster studies research,and found that authors are using the expression in three principal ways:(1) delineating natural and human-induced hazards;(2) using the expression to leverage popularity;and(3) critiquing the expression 'natural disaster.' We also identified vulnerability themes that illustrate the context of 'natural disaster' usage. The implications of continuing to use this expression, while explicitly researching human vulnerability, are wide-ranging, and we explore what this means for us and our peers. This study particularly aims to stimulate debate within the disaster studies research community and related fields as to whether the term 'natural disaster' is really fit for purpose moving forward.
