The Phenomenological Semiotics of Iconicity and Pictoriality-Including Some Replies to My Critics

Instead of rejecting the notion of iconicity, as has often been the case in semiotics, we should inquire deeper into its specifi c nature, and also into the peculiar way in which it is manifested by pictures. In order to show why Umberto Eco, Nelson Goodman, and others were fundamentally wrong in their classical critique of iconicity, we will pursue a close reading of Peirce, but we will interpret his work in accordance with more recent fi ndings in cognitive and perceptual psychology, and we will modify the theory as a result of our interpretation. At the same time, we will rely on phenomenological insights, both those made explicit by Edmund Husserl in his studies of pictorial consciousness, and those which are implicit, notably in the work of the psychologist James Gibson. As a result, we will distinguish iconicity as such from iconic grounds and iconic signs, and we will delineate two very different kinds of iconic signs, which we will call primary and secondary iconic signs. Even so, pictorial iconicity has itspeculiarities, which we will also try to elucidate. In so doing, we will consider to what extent the linguistic model is still helpful, and in which respects it is misleading.

Recently an object-oriented approach has been applied in the fields of finite element analysis with a view to treating the various complexities within these. It has been demonstrated that finite element software designed using an object-oriented approach can be significantly more robust than traditional codes. This paper describes a special kind of implementation of object-oriented programming which is rather hybrid in nature, in the development of a finite element code for engineering analysis of metal working problems using C++, and discusses the advantages of this approach.

Debugging software code has been a challenge for software developers since the early days of computer programming. A simple need, because the world is run by software. So perhaps the biggest engineering challenge is finding ways to make software more reliable. This review provides an overview of techniques developed over time in the field of software model checking to solve the problem of detecting errors in program code. In addition, the challenges posed by this technology are discussed and ways to mitigate them in future research and applications are proposed. A comprehensive examination of the various model verification methods used to detect program code errors is intended to lay the foundation for future research in this area.

The Selenge River Basin occupies a total area of 447,000 km^2, of which 343,000 km^2 is located within Mongolia(the remainder is in Russia). The basin is characterized by an extreme continental climate, consisting of harsh, cold, dry winters and short, hot summers. Annual average temperatures are approximately-4℃ and annual rainfall ranges from 220 mm to 450 *** Selenge River Basin is a critical groundwater resource for Mongolia. Greater than 55%(~1.5 million) of Mongolia’s population resides within the basin and, during 2003, an estimated average of 700,000 m^3/day of water was abstracted from the basin’s groundwater system. The basin services Mongolia’s largest cities and industries(including the rapidly expanding mining sector) as well as important traditional pastoral ranges. However, due to the great spatial extent and irregularity of groundwater resources in the basin, coupled with the equally heterogeneous concentration of evolving landuses, some local aquifers near major centres are likely being overexploited, hence it is important to manage each sub-catchment individually within a greater overall management plan. Sustainable yields need to be determined to ensure maintenance of current groundwater levels and environmental flows for rivers, as well as providing a sustainable resource for continued utilisation. These need to be incorporated into management strategies at the international, regional and local level to ensure ongoing conservation of the resource and fair access for all stakeholders.

There has been a decline in the number of public schools in South Africa offering information technology as a subject,yet it holds a special significance in higher level computational courses especially at tertiary *** doing programming in information technology(IT) have difficulties during the initial stages of learning how to design and develop programs due to the abstract nature of the subject and the demands on the use of data structures to establish needed heuristics to solve problems or design *** the Semantic wave code of Legitimation Code Theory lens,this research aims to address the cognitive aspects of deeper information technology learning especially acquiring the appropriate knowledge structures for program design and *** abstract semantics are the cornerstone of information technology as a school subject and their difficulty may cause memory overload,hence the importance of mental structures on how computers *** the semantic wave construct of the Legitimation Code Theory,we unpacked unfamiliar settings and repacked the different settings by moving from simpler meanings [concrete] to complex meanings [abstract].In this work,we discuss issues that make programming more accessible by navigating the abstract semantics using contextualised exploration giving learners’ concretized understanding while placing them in unfamiliar settings requiring ***,this work builds on researched literature and experience as information technology subject specialists explaining how we subject learners through various context and semantic profiles due to the multi-level nature of abstraction in programming.

3G的关键应用之一是流媒体,它的技术瓶颈在于视频压缩算法。将视频压缩和移动通信领域有效地结合,将获得更好的应用效果。从20世纪90年代以来,各种国际组织都在进行着视频压缩标准的修订工作,压缩算法也从第一代演进到了第三代,但是将视频压缩和移动通信两个领域相结合还是最近两年的事情。因为移动通信本身固有的条件制约,对视频压缩算法又提出了新的要求。本文分析了最新一代视频压缩算法在抗误码性能方面进行的一些改进,并作了仿真验证。
