Nervonic acid(NA,cis-15-tetracosenoic acid)is a very long-chain monounsaturated fatty acid that has been shown to be a core component of nerve fibers and nerve cells.It can be used to treat and prevent many neurological diseases.At present,commercially available NA is mainly derived from acer truncatum seeds,which contain about 5%e6%NA in their seed oil.The aim of this study were to identify and analyze NA-containing acer species that could be used as NA resource plants.For this purpose,46 acer species seeds were collected in China and in some or all of the seed oils from these species 15 fatty acids were detected,including linoleic acid,oleic acid(C18:1D9,C18:1D11),erucic acid,palmitic acid,NA,linolenic acid(C18:3D6,9,12,C18:3D9,12,15),eicosenoic acid(C20:1D11,C20:1D13),stearic acid,behenic acid,tetracosanoic acid,arachidic acid,and docosadienoic acid.Nervonic acid was detected in all samples,but the content was highly variable among species.NA content over 9%was detected in eleven species,of which acer elegantulum had the highest levels(13.90%).The seed oil content,seed weight,and fatty acid profiles varied among species,but the comprehensive evaluation value(W)showed that A.coriaceifolium could be a new potential NA resources plant.The results also showed that NA was significantly negatively correlated with palmitic acid,oleic acid,and eicosenoic acid,but positively correlated with eicosadienoic acid,behenic acid,erucic acid,and tetracosanoic acid,which indicate the probable pathway for NA biosynthesis in acer plants.This study has identified acer species that may serve as NA resources and will help guide subsequent species breeding programs.

acer truncatum is considered a promising species as a raw material to produce nervonic acid(NA). The goal of this study was to explore the variation of oil content and nervonic acid content of 138 accessions native to 14 regions in China as well as provide guidance for establishing plantations and improving the production of nervonic acid. A large range of variation was found in oil content, nervonic acid per gram of oil, and nervonic acid per gram of seed(17.81%–36.56%, 3.90%–7.85%, and 0.84%–2.31%, respectively). Accessions YS-6, ABZ-6 and DQTL-8 were found as the most promising potential oil sources; PQ-2 was considered the optimal germplasm, and JY-6, NJ-8, LF-6, and CC-8 were found as promising potential sources for producing NA. A very significant difference(P < 0.01) among 14 regions was observed. DQTL and YS regions are considered the optimal farming regions for crops with high oil content, while the CC and PQ regions are regarded as the most suitable regions for nervonic acid production. A geographical trend from South to North was observed in which amount of seed oil increased but no such trend in nervonic acid content was observed. The data collected in the study on oil content and nervonic acid in accessions of A. truncatum in various regions can be utilized for establishing plantations of promising genotypes through clonal means.

In the Northeastern U.S.,drought is expected to increase in frequency over the next century,and therefore,the responses of trees to drought are important to understand.There is recent debate about whether land-use change or moisture availability is the primary driver of changes in forest species composition in this region.Some argue that fire suppression from the early twentieth century to present has resulted in an increase in shade-tolerant and pyrophobic tree species that are drought intolerant,while others suggest precipitation variability as a major driver of species composition.From this debate,an emerging hypothesis is that mesophication and increases in the abundance of mesophytic genera(e.g.,acer,Betula,and Fagus)resulted in forests that are more vulnerable to drought.This review examines the published literature and factors that contribute to drought vulnerability of Northeastern U.S.forests.We assessed two key concepts related to drought vulnerability,including drought tolerance(ability to survive drought)and sensitivity(short-term responses to drought),with a focus on Northeastern U.S.species.We assessed drought-tolerance classifications for species,which revealed both consistencies and inconsistencies,as well as contradictions when compared to actual observations,such as higher mortality for drought-tolerant species.Related to drought sensitivity,recent work has focused on isohydric/anisohydric regulation of leaf water potential.However,based on the review of the literature,we conclude that drought sensitivity should be viewed in terms of multiple variables,including leaf abscission,stomatal sensitivity,turgor pressure,and dynamics of non-structural carbohydrates.Genera considered drought sensitive(e.g.,acer,Betula,and Liriodendron)may actually be less prone to drought-induced mortality and dieback than previously considered because stomatal regulation and leaf abscission in these species are effective at preventing water potential from reaching critical thresholds during extreme drought.Independent

Aims Exploring the characteristics and function of a flower color poly-morphism contributes to our understanding of floral evolution in angiosperms.However,little information is available on stigma color polymorphisms in flowering plants despite their important functional role in plant reproduction.Methods We studied a stigma color polymorphism at the individual level in acer pictum subsp.mono(aka A.mono)by investigating stigma-color morph proportion and comparing stigma performance and compo-nents of female fitness(pollen adhesion,pollen germination,fruit set,seed set and fruit weight)between the two morphs(red and greenish-yellow stigma)within natural populations at Dongling mountain in the north of China.in the flowering period,we conducted hand pol-lination in natural populations and then made microscopic observa-tions using the aniline blue fluorescence method.Important Findingsindividuals in the studied populations did not change their stigma color between years,and flowers produced by a single tree were uniform in their stigma color.This strongly suggests that stigma color variation is genetically controlled.The percentage of the red stigma flowers with germinated pollen grains was significantly higher than that of the greenish-yellow stigma flowers when hand pollination was conducted in the early flowering period,but not so in the late flowering period.There was no significant difference in the percentage of flowers with pollen adhesion to the stigma between the two morphs.Fruit set of the red morph was signifi-cantly higher than that of the greenish-yellow morph.our findings suggest that the red morph may be more advantageous for pollen germination and fruit set than the greenish-yellow morph,which may provide a functional explanation for the high incidence of the red stigma morph in the studied populations.alternative explana-tions for the stigma color polymorphism are discussed to stimulate further work.

Plant volatile organic compounds (Biogenic Volatile Organic compounds, referred BVOCs) have a significant impact on the atmospheric environment, air quality and human health. This experiment takes acer truncatum flowers as the research object, uses solid-phase micro-extraction combine GC-MS (SPME-GC-MS) to detect the main component of volatiles released by the flowers from 10 individual trees of acer truncatum (acer truncatum Bunge). The results showed that 37 kinds of volatiles were detected and they are belonged to four types organic compouds, such as terpenoids, alcohols, ketones, esters. According to the analysis of the main components of acer truncatum flower volatiles includes Fluorene, 4,8 -Dimethyl-1,3 (E), 7-Nonene, (cis, trans)-2,6-Dimethyl-2,4,6-triene-Partenkirchen, Myrcene, Basil hexene, 3-Carene, (E)-Basil, Camphene, Caryophyllene, Linalool, α-Terpinolene, O-cymene, 3-Vinyl-1,2-dimethyl-1, Eucalyptus alcohols and Alcohol vinegar-12. However, there were no significant differences between individual trees in terms of obscure material O-cymene, Eucalyptus alcohols, Alcohol vinegar-12, as well as the significant differences in terms of remaining volatiles.
