The Application of Embodied Cognitive Linguistics in the English Translation of Two-Part Allegorical Saying—An Analysis of Examples From A dream of red mansions

As a kind of widely circulated folk language,two-part allegorical saying(“xiehouyu”)carries the wisdom of the Chinese people and is characterized with humor and vivid *** the two English translation versions of A dream of red mansions as examples,this paper analyzes the English translation of two-part allegorical saying based on the core principle of Embodied Cognitive Linguistics(ECL),“Reality-Cognition-Language”,and explores how the English translation of two-part allegorical saying reflects the three dimensions of ECL.

The furniture world of ＂a dream in red mansions＂ is a microcosm of Qing Dynasty aristocraticc furniture. Its material, shape and decoration are very elegant,which is not only to meet the needs of life,but also meet the pursuit of aesthetic contentment. On different occasions, coordinated with different furniture, it can form a hamaonious picture with the enviromnent. At the same time, their display range and combination mode also strictly follow different etiquette systems. In the red mansions, it shows the artistic beauty and is in the feudal shadow, and there is no exception in the furniture world. For ＂a dream in red mansions＂ , it is how beautiful and how sad it is!

作为“伟大的传统”，《红楼梦》对清末民初小说影响显著。“拟旧”“翻新”之风中有《真假宝玉》《新石头记》，后者也是《红楼梦》最重要的一部现代续书。《林黛玉笔记》重写了《红楼梦》，《泪珠缘》是现代小说中仿写《红楼梦》最像的一部。而《广陵潮》宏大的历史视野、纷繁的世相描述，突破了《红楼梦》大家庭叙事的格局，但自叙传式的身世感慨依然剪不断与传统的情感牵连。这些作品与《红楼梦》的“像”与“不像”代表了传统至现代转捩过程中的一个面向，而写作这些作品的清末民初作家正是利维斯所言的“意义重大的小说家们”，他们的作品参与了传统的构建，也留下了深深的现代印痕。
