Imidazol-1-yl-acetic acid as a novel green bifunctional organocatalyst for the synthesis of 1,8-dioxooctahydroxanthenes under solvent-free conditions

Imidazol-1-yl-acetic acid is introduced as a new, efficient and recyclable green bifunctional organocatalyst for the synthesis of 1,8-dioxooctahydroxanthenes under solvent-free conditions. This catalyst is water soluble and can be separated from the products by simple filtration. The filtrate can be evaporated to dryness and recrystallized from cool methanol to give the recovered catalyst. This organocatalyst was used for the synthesis of 1,8-dioxooctahydroxanthenes under solvent-flee conditions and recycled up to 8 consecutive runs without any losing of its efficiency.

A Transition-Metal-Free Approach to Polysubstituted Furans

Furans are one of the most important and versatile heterocycles found in natural products, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and functional materials. In addition, they have been widely used as valuable building blocks in organic synthesis. In addition to traditional methods, the transition-metal-mediated synthesis of furans has become popular. But the expensive and complicated catalysts not only have higher cost, but also cause potential contamination of the products that are particularly significant in the pharmaceutical industry. Therefore, transition-metal-free synthesis of functionalized furans under mild conditions remains highly desirable. Herein, we reported a transition-metal-free synthetic strategy for substituted furan with 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds and 1,1-dichloroalkenes as starting materials. The cheap and easily available stock chemical vinyl dichlorides act as the masked alkynes. Broad substrate scopes with a good tolerance of a variety of functional groups repected to both coupling partners are observed. Both 2,3-disubstituted and 2,3,5-trisubstituted furans could be achieved in moderate to high yields in the absence of a transition-metal catalyst. This method opens up a new way for the synthesis of various valuable furans.
