The investigation of nonlinear optical characteristics of ethanol solution doped with is presented. A large thermal-induced third-order nonlinear refractive index up to silver nanoparticles 1.941× 10^-7 cm2/W is obtained from the mixed solution under 488-nm continue wave （CW） laser irradiation, which may result from surface plasmon resonance （SPR） enhancement effect of silver nanoparticles as well as high thermo-optic coefficient and low thermal conductivity of ethanol. Obvious spatial self-phase modulation and influence of thermal-induced negative lens effect are observed when a beam propagates through this solution, indicating promising applications such as optical limiting, beam flattening, and so on.

The use of Fenton＇s reagent （Fe^2＋/H2O2） and Fenton-like reagents containing transition metals of Cu（Ⅱ）, Zn（Ⅱ）, Co（Ⅱ）, and Mn（Ⅱ） for an alum sludge conditioning to improve its dewaterability was investigated. The results obtained were compared with those obtained from conditioning the same alum sludge using cationic and anionic polymers. Experimental results show that Fenton＇s reagent was the best among the Fenton and Fenton-like reagents for the alum sludge conditioning. A considerable effectiveness of capillary suction time （CST） reduction efficiency of 47% can be achieved under test conditions of Fe^2＋/H2O2 = 20/125 mg/g DS （dry solid） and pH 6.0. The observation of floc-like particles after Fenton＇s reagent conditioning of alum sludge suggested that the mechanism of Fenton＇s reagent conditioning was different from that of polymer conditioning. In spite of the lower efficiency in the CST reduction of Fenton＇s reagent in alum sludge conditioning compared to that of polymer conditioning, Fenton＇s reagent offers a more environmentally safe option. Tiffs study provided an example of proactive treatment engineering, which is aimed at seeking a safe alternative to the use of polymers in sludge conditioning towards achieving a more sustainable sludge management strategy.

We exhibit a three-dimensional （3D） photonic nanojet based on a dielectric microsphere irradiated by a plane wave with the finite-difference time-domain （FDTD） method. We investigate the influence of the refractive index of the surrounding on the properties of the nanojet by simulating the electric field distributions in it. The simulation results show that, by optimally choosing the size of the sphere and the ratio of the refractive indices of the sphere and the surrounding, the focus point can occur just on the surface of the sphere even if the refractive index of the surrounding is changed. Additionally, the peak amplitude of the nanojet increases with increasing the refractive index of the surrounding. However, the decay length and the jet width of the nanojet decrease simultaneously. These effects may have potential applications in observation or manipulation of nano-objects such as antibodies in biology. In nanojet-enabled optical data storage, the photonic nanojet may be also helpful for improving data-storage capacities and retrieval speed by controlling the field amplitude, the decay length, and jet width of the nanojet.

Considering the special carriers in organic semiconductors, the spin polarized current under electric field in a ferromagnetic/organic semiconductor system is theoretically studied. Based on the spin-diffusion theory, the current spin polarization under the electric field is obtained. It is found that electric field can enhance the current spin polarization.

A sensitive polymer diaphragm based fiber Fabry-Perot （F-P） sensor for aeroacoustic wave measurement is presented. A novel polymer material poly （phthalazinone ether sulfone ketone）（PPESK） diaphragm is used as the acoustic sensing element. The effective dimensions of the diaphragm are 4 mm in diameter and 6 μm in thickness. Owing to the good mechanical and optical features of the diaphragm and application of the interferometric/intensity demodulation, a system sensitivity of 31 mV/Pa is achieved in the frequency range of 0.1-12.7 kHz, and a signal-to-noise ratio （SNR） of 29 dB at 1 kHz is obtained. The linear response of the sensor is from 0.35 to 2.82 Pa, corresponding to 85 103 dB sound pressure level （SPL）（re： 20 μPa）. The sensor has the potential to be used as a universal and low-cost optical microphone.

Efficient second harmonic generation （SHG） in a nonlinear transparent conducting oxide （TCO） stripe wave- guide that incorporates an organic polymer is theoretically investigated. The phase match condition between the fundamental photonic mode at the second harmonic and the fundamental long-range plasmonic mode at the fundamental frequency can be satisfied by dynamically or statically tuning the free carrier concentration of the TCO. The theoretically generated signal reaches its maximum up to 56.4 mW at a propagation distance of 34.8 pm for a pumping power of 1 W. The corresponding normalized conversion efficiency of the phase-matched SHG is up to 4.65 × 103 W-1 cm-2.

Polarographic Behavior of PMBP and Its Complexes with Rare Earth

The polarographic adsorptive complex wave of rare earths (RE) with 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-benzoylpyrazoione-5 (PMBP) was studied in HAc-NaAc medium at pH=3.80. In the singlesweep polarography, the reduction potential of complex wave (-1.16V) is more negative than that of the free ligand. (-1.12V), and the wave was proven to be an adsorptive complex wave by cyclic voltammetry method. This experiment proved that only the complexes of heavy RE ions can be adsorbed on the electrode under the same conditions. So it is a good method to determine heavy rare earths in the presence of light rare earths.

A tunable Fabry-Perot (F-P) filter by using electro-optic polymer film is proposed. The electro-optic polymer is alkoxysilane dye (ASD)/SiO2-TiO2 hybrid material, whose electro-optic coefficient 733 is about 5 pm/V, The wavelength tuning range of 3.8 nm under 400-V DC voltage and the nonlinear characteristic with the electric field have been obtained via electro-optical properties of polymer. Both of polymer film fabrication and F-P filter design have been introduced. The tunable F-P filter is designed for the application of two-input/two-output port wavelength-selective optical switch. Also, some problems have been discussed in this letter.

Polyaniline doped with rare earth chloride was synthesized in organic solvent and identified by elemental analysis and infrared spectroscopy. The experimental results show that there exists both doping and complexation at the same time in the resulting product. When pH4. Moreover, polyaniline doped with rare earth chloride exhibits better thermal stability than that doped with hydrochloric acid.
