Ophiuroid fauna of cobalt-rich crust seamounts in the Northwest Pacific Ocean

Seamounts are vulnerable ecosystems in the deep sea and can be heavily impacted by human activities,such as bottom fishing and deep-sea *** species composition and distribution patterns of benthic fauna is key information for the designation of marine protected areas and environmental management *** contracts for cobalt-rich crust exploration have been granted to China,Japan and Korea in the Northwest Pacific Ocean by the International Seabed ***,our knowledge of benthic biodiversity in this area is extremely *** 2013–2020,eight Chinese Ocean Mineral Resources R&D Association(COMRA)cruises were conducted to investigate the benthic assemblages of nine seamounts in this *** this study,191 ophiuroids collected from seamounts in the Northwest Pacific were identified into 29 species in 11 *** and euryalidae were the two most dominant families with 12 and 6 species,*** and Ophiopyrgidae were represented by two species each,while seven families were represented by only one *** species were widely distributed among 4–5 seamounts,and 17 species were found only at a single *** integrated regional taxonomic dataset of Ophiuroidea was generated and analyzed.A total of 23 and 14 species were obtained from the Magellan Seamount Chain(MSC)and the Marcus-Wake seamounts(MWS),respectively,with 8 species shared between the two seamount *** individual-based rarefaction curves did not reach an asymptote,suggesting that the sampling effort was inadequate for either the entire region or each single *** species distributed in a narrow depth range,and the species composition was different between water depths above and below 2000 *** results greatly improve the understanding of megafaunal biodiversity from seamounts in the Northwest Pacific Ocean,and highlight the necessity of further surveys to provide more robust information for environmental protection and manageme

Spatial patterns of phytoplankton communities in an International Seabed Authority licensed area(COMRA,Clarion-Clipperton Zone)in relation to upper ocean biogeochemistry

The Clarion-Clipperton Zone(CCZ)hosts one of the largest known oceanic nodule fields worldwide and is regulated by the International Seabed Authority.A baseline assessment of diversity and distribution patterns is essential for reliable predictions of disturbed ecosystem response scenarios for sustained commercial activities in the *** the present study,the spatial patterns and diversity of phytoplankton communities were analyzed along with upper ocean biogeochemistry,in the licensed China Ocean Mineral Resources R&D Association(COMRA)contract area and the surrounding western CCZ between August 21 and October 8,*** indicated this was a typical low-nutrient low-chlorophyll a(Chl a)environment,characterized by low levels of phytoplankton abundance and *** total 112 species belonging to 4 phyla were recorded(>10μm),with species counts including 82 diatoms,27 dinoflagellates,1 cyanobacteria and 2 *** taxa in successive order of descending abundance and occurrence included Nizschia marina,Cyclotella stylorum,Dactyliosolen mediterraneus,Rhizosolenia setigera,Pseudo-nitzschia delicatissima,Thalassiothrix frauenfeldii,Synedra sp.,Chaetoceros simplex and Pseudo-nitzschia *** depth-averaged abundance and Chl a concentrations were(265±233)cells/L and(0.27±0.30)μg/L,*** accounted for 90.94%of the community with(241±223)cells/L,while dinoflagellates accounted for 5.67%and(15±13)cells/*** distribution pattern exhibited the same trend as abundance,Chl a and species richness,showing subsurface maximum levels at around 100 m,with stations near 10°N having higher levels than in the *** analysis was performed in two assemblages,relating to geographic locations to the south and north of 12°*** subsurface maximum of abundance,Chl a,species richness,dissolved oxygen and nitrite were generally corresponding to the presence of high salinity North Pacific Central Water at depths of 50-120 *** availabilit

Nutrient distributions and nitrogen-anomaly(N^(*))in the tropical North Pacific Ocean

Based upon cruise observations broadly covering the tropical North Pacific during July-November 2017,together with data obtained from the World Ocean Circulation experiment Hydrographic Program,this study examined the distribution of dissolved inorganic nitrogen(DIN,nitrate(NO_(3)^(-))+nitrite(NO_(2)^(-))),dissolved inorganic phosphorus(DIP)and related N^(*)(nitrogen-anomaly,N^(*)=N-16P+2.9,where N and P are the concentrations of DIN(>1.0μmol/L)and DIP(>0.1μmol/L)),used as an index of N2fixation,in the upper 1000 m of the water *** concentrations displayed distinct spatial variability in the upper ocean but became relatively constant at a depth of 1000 m:they were high at low latitudes and in the eastern region,with an obvious nutricline at~150 m(DIN,~32.0μmol/L;DIP,~2.4μmol/L)and then generally increased with depth;they decreased markedly(DIN,~1.2μmol/L;DIP,~0.1μmol/L;at~150 m)at high latitudes and in the western region,where a nutricline was not *** N^(*)index showed significant meridional and zonal variation,with the most negative values located at low latitudes and in the eastern region(~10°N,~150°-170°e),while becoming positive towards the northwest(the north of~18°N,~160°e westward).A N^(*)concentration larger than 2.0μmol/L which often used as an indicator of N2fixation,was observed between 155°e and 165°e;N^(*)values were 2.0μmol/L to6.0μmol/L at~15°-28°N,i.e.,much higher than those in the southern sector(0-2.0μmol/L at~5°-10°N).Zonally,N^(*)decreased gradually from west(-2.0μmol/L to 4.0μmol/L,~145°-165°e)to east(-2.0μmol/L to-8.0μmol/L,~155°W)along~10°N,which was consistent with the distribution of Trichodesmium abundance and N2fixation ***,since such region was also supplied with aeolian deposition,high N^(*)was probably not only induced by N2fixation but also influenced by iron and/or nitrogen deposition.

Temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of nutrients in Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone in the Pacific in 2017

This research investigated eight stations in Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone(CCFZ)in the eastern tropical Pacific in 2017 to study the spatial distribution characteristics of nutrients and chlorophyll a(Chi a)concentration,and compared nutrient concentrations and molar ratios with those of other investigations 20 years ago in the same *** study found that dissolved inorganic nutrient(N,P and Si)concentrations were lowest in the upper layer,and increased from surface to some depths,then they decreased a little to the bottom.N was the limited nutrient factor for the growth of phytoplankton *** nutrient concentrations and molar ratios have no obvious changes in 2017 comparing those in 1998-2003,supplemented from the equatorial Pacific,nutrient concentrations in the study area were higher than those in seamounts in the North Pacific and Station ***,this study used Generalized Additive Models(GAMs)to infer the underlying bottom-up factors controlling phytoplankton abundance(Chi a concentration),showing that depth,salinity and PO^-P concentration were major factors controlling the growth of phytoplankton ***,this study can provide basic data and theoretical support for the development of polymetallic nodule area and its long-term impact assessment on the environment.

存在动态偏差情况下的传感器校准,与多个传感器的相对校准类似.实现相对校准对许多控制问题都很重要,比如需要产生精确温度梯度的问题、保持均匀与稳定温度场的问题.本文以温度传感器为例,对静态(稳态)校准与动态校准从理论和实验两个角度进行了对比.动态校准的一个优势是其适用于任何测量数据,但其需要建立一个测量仪器的动态模型.尽管本文只研究了一个由三个传感器构成的简单设备,但其结果也适用于更复杂的情况.这正是因为动态校准的另一个显著优势,即其能在任何设备上进行校准,校准的一个前提是所用的动态模型与传感器具有相同的阶次.本文证明了可辨识性(可校准性)条件,并通过以迭代方式求解一个非线性加权最小二乘问题,实现了校准.对解的收敛性、一致性和渐近效率,不但给予了理论证明,且通过蒙特卡罗模拟实验进行了验证.

Sources of particulate organic matter in the Chukchi and Siberian shelves: clues from carbon and nitrogen isotopes

The stable isotopic composition(δ13C andδ15N)and carbon/nitrogen ratio(C/N)of particulate organic matter(POM)in the Chukchi and east Siberian shelves from July to September,2016 were measured to evaluate the spatial variability and origin of ***δ13CPOC values were in the range of−29.5‰to−17.5‰with an average of−25.9‰±2.0‰,and theδ15NPN values ranged from 3.9‰to 13.1‰with an average of 8.0‰±1.6‰.The C/N ratios in the east Siberian shelf were generally higher than those in the Chukchi shelf,while theδ13C andδ15N values were just the *** low C/N ratios(28‰)and highδ15NPN(>10‰)values were observed in the Wrangel Island polynya,which was attributed to the early bloom of small *** contributions of terrestrial POM,bloom-produced POM and non-bloom marine POM were estimated using a three end-member mixing *** spatial distribution of terrestrial POM showed a high fraction in the east Siberian shelf and decreased eastward,indicating the influence of Russian *** distribution of non-bloom marine POM showed a high fraction in the Chukchi shelf with the highest fraction occurring in the Bering Strait and decreased westward,suggesting the stimulation of biological production by the Pacific inflow in the Chukchi *** fractions of bloom-produced POM were highest in the winter polynya and gradually decreased toward the periphery.A negative relationship between the bloom-produced POM and the sea ice meltwater inventory was observed,indicating that the net sea ice loss promotes early bloom in the *** the high fraction of bloom-produced POM,the early bloom of phytoplankton in the polynyas may play an important role on marine production and POM export in the Arctic shelves.

Baseline establishment for metals in the western Clarion-Clipperton Zone

Resource exploitation in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone(CCZ)is of major research interest worldwide,but its influence on the environment is poorly understood,especially due to the lack of baseline values for metals in the surrounding *** work aimed to establish the baseline values of 17 metals(Ba,Ca,K,Mg,Mn,Na,Ag,As,B,Cd,Co,Cr,Cu,Hg,Ni,Pb,and Zn)using normalization,the cumulative frequency curve method considering a total of 172 samples taken from 8 multitube cores and 1 box sediment core collected in the western CCZ during the COMRA-45 cruise campaign from August to September *** baseline values of the evaluated metals were as follows:1932 mg/kg for Ba,29512 mg/kg for Ca,18150 mg/kg for K,17120 mg/kg for Mg,6747 mg/kg for Mn,28546 mg/kg for Na,0.571 mg/kg for Ag,5.00 mg/kg for As,94.4 mg/kg for B,0.626 mg/kg for Cd,104 mg/kg for Co,76.1 mg/kg for Cr,370 mg/kg for Cu,0.028 mg/kg for Hg,190 mg/kg for Ni,27.5 mg/kg for Pb and 156 mg/kg for *** findings would fill the baseline value gap in the study area and further improve accuracy of environmental impact assessments on the impact of resource exploitation.

The particle fluxes in sediment traps from Niulang Guyot area in the Northwest Pacific Ocean

The flux of settling particles in the ocean has been widely explored since 1980s due to its important role in biogenic elements cycling,especially in the transport of particulate organic carbon(POC)in the deep ***,research in the seamount area of the oligotrophic subtropical Northwest Pacific Ocean is *** this work,two sediment traps were deployed at the foot and another two at the hillside of Niulang Guyot from August2017 to July *** magnitude and composition of particle fluxes were *** main factors influencing the spatial variations of the fluxes were *** results indicated a low particulate flux from Niulang Guyot area in the Northwest Pacific Ocean,reflecting low primary productivity of the oligotrophic *** total mass flux(TMF)decreased from 2.57 g/(m^(2)·a)to 0.56 g/(m^(2)·a)with increasing depth from 600 m to 4850 m.A clear seasonal pattern of TMF was observed,with higher flux in summer than that in *** peak flux of 26.52 mg/(m^(2)·d)occurred in August at 600 m,while the lowest value of 0.07 mg/(m^(2)·d)was shown in February at 4850 *** settling particles at the deep layers had similar biochemical composition,with calcium carbonate(CaCO_(3))accounting for up to 90%,followed by organic matter and opal,characteristics of Carbonate *** POC flux decreased more rapidly in the twilight layer because of faster decomposition,remineralization,and higher temperature.A small fraction of POC was transported into the deep ocean by biological *** fluxes were mainly controlled by the calcareous ballasts besides the primary productivity of the surface *** advection may be another important factor affecting the flux in the seamount *** combination of settled matters rich in foraminiferal tests with topography and currents may be the reason for regulating the local abundance of benthos on *** results will fill in the knowledge gap of sedimentation flux,improve the understanding of ecosyste

Three-dimensional characteristics of mesoscale eddies simulated by a regional model in the northwestern Pacific Ocean during 2000–2008

Mesoscale eddies play vital roles in ocean *** previous studies focused on eddy surface features and individual three-dimensional(3D)eddy cases in the northwestern Pacific Ocean,the analysis of unique eddy3D regional characteristics is still lacking.A 3D eddy detection scheme is applied to 9 years(2000-2008)of eddyresolving Regional Ocean Modeling System(ROMS)output to obtain a 3D eddy dataset from the surface to a depth of 1000 m in the northwestern Pacific Ocean(15°-35°N,120°-145°e).The 3D characteristics of mesoscale eddies are analyzed in two regions,namely,Box1(Subtropical Countercurrent,15°-25°N,120°-145°e)and Box2(Southern Kuroshio extension,25°-35°N,120°-145°e).In Box1,the current is characterized by strong vertical shear and weak horizontal *** Box2,the current is characterized by the strong Kuroshio,topographic effect,and the westward propagation of Rossby *** results indicate the importance of baroclinic instability in Box1,whereas in Box2,both the barotropic and baroclinic instability are ***,the mesoscale eddies’properties in Box1 and Box2 are *** eddies in Box1 have larger number and radius but a shorter *** contrast,Box2 has fewer eddies,which have smaller radius but longer ***,more eddies are detected at the subsurface than at the surface in both regions;the depth of 650 m is the turning point in *** this depth,the number of cyclonic eddies(Ces)is larger than that of anticyclonic eddies(Aes).In Box2,the number of Ces is dominant *** kinetic energy(eKe)and mean normalized relative vorticity in Box2are significantly higher than those in *** increasing depth,the attenuation trend of eKe and relative vorticity of Box1 become greater than those of ***,the upper ocean(about 300 m in depth)contains 68.6%of the eddies(instantaneous eddy).Only 16.6%of the eddies extend to 1000 *** addition,about87%of the eddies are bowl-shaped eddies in the two reg
